Zero water in the cabin. Although SeaTow made provisions for a big hull leak.
I will modify that to say Zero water in cabin, From the Storm.

The provisions by SeaTow were from this lift damage. Perhaps the reason they were not "Happy Campers" when setting up for the final tow to Dry Docks.

Here is what happened on the lift.

bowhole.jpeg

Saba must have nosed down when put back in water, and that hole cause the wave of salt water to enter the cabin.
That is the Starboard Anchor locker area.

This is the only hole in the hull and perhaps the largest damage to the boat.

Oh well, a 13.5 ton boat has a center of gravity unexpected by the crane operator.

After further investigation, that hole was in the Starboard Bow, before the lift by SeaTow.
If you Zoom in on the Before Small picture above in post #42...
You can see a small crack was there already, and the fact the bollard is Round, it has pushed in the hole already.

The size of the hole looks huge, but it only about half the diameter of the post. Thus the hole was hidden from camera view.

No way could SeaTow fix it while dangling from the crane, nor was it their fault.
______
I will start adding pictures about the Towing to dry docks and our progress on clean up.

I will try to limit the repair discussion to thing useful for others on SBO who might have similar needs.

PS: Progressive Insurance has been fantastic and are moving step by step in a timely fashion.:dancing:

More Proof of the ≈14 foot surge that got Saba

As I was doing a video, watching SeaTow tie up the 50 Gallon garbage can for a stabilizing Drone [Sea Anchor]
I noticed these 2 Dirt Piles on an empty lot.

SurgeHt1.jpeg
I added the Blue Horizontal line to show how that Wave came ashore.

SurgeHt2.jpeg
I continued that Blue line in a pan toward Bay St. Louis.

SurgeHt3.jpeg

Plus the Tides were 2 foot higher this day, versus Zeta at start.

Note the other Sailboat still on top of the finger pier, right above that guys head.
________
A bit of Storm Trivia now...

Did you know this is the Second Storm named ZETA?

The first one was in 2005, the year of Hurricane Katrina.

Of course we were engrossed in Katrina recovery to even notice it.
But it was very late and even carried over into 2006!!!

_______
After the lift to the Canal water, the Keel was stuck by setting down, not plowing into the mud.

Their twin 150hp motors heated up when trying it alone.
Then they used the big winch on the truck with a Dual Shackle and Boat.
PullingOffMud.jpeg
Finally slowly pulling it to Float in the deeper part of the Canal.

That Towing boat then towed Saba by bow lines , to a deeper area in the Bay of St. Louis.

This is where they exchange Tows to a side tow for more control and a faster speed.
TransferTows.jpeg

The next part of the Tow had to pass under a Draw bridge to enter the Industrial Canal to the PCYW.
In DryDock Canal.jpeg

You can barely see the hole on the port [duhh Starboard:oops:] side, just below the anchor.

SeaTow releases and PCYW slowly pulls it into the Lift Area.

One of my favorite pictures is the White haired Owner of PCYW, kicking the bent Keel fin, to straighten it.:)
That Lead/Antimony fin was bent on the original set down of Saba.

Also note the precautionary plywood patch that was screwed to hull and foamed.

Hopefully this gives a bit of insight on Towing a damaged boat.

Appreciate the update. Looks like a very professional group you dealt with. I hope to never need their services, but have a little more knowledge if the occasion presents itself.

Jim,
I didn't realized that there was a yard there. That should be fairly convenient for you to check on progress, etc.
Hopefully the repair will progress at a reasonable pace. Good Luck.

Yes, it is 15 minute drive from my house.

In fact, my crew and I are going there in the morning [11/23] to check the teak wood interior drying.
I have a wood moisture meter, I used to check post Katrina house reconstruction.

We left the boat open and breeze flowing though for 5 days of Sunny, low humidity weather.

All clean on the inside after good washing with fresh water.

That will be next update.

Cleaning up remediation and take off of Personal Items.

We left the boat open and breeze flowing though for 5 days of Sunny weather.
We found the Teak wood had dried out! Ya gotta love TEAK!!!

Since we expecting some rains soon, I did not want rain in boat.

I closed Front Hatch [Fig 4 , Post# 40, Item 8] to stop raining in. Then I was trying figure out how to get drying air to flow thru the boat.

Duhhhh, I then remembered a seldom used feature on Saba.

Dorade Vents

We opened up our 4 vents. [Fig 4 , Post# 40, Item 22 & 68]
Boy was there a nice breeze inside the Boat!!

We shop vacuumed all the main Bilge and dried it completely. We had stopped all leaks in from the Weather Deck.
So now we should be fully drying out.

The only thing that is still soaked, for now, is the Sound Proofing and insulation around the Generator. More to come on that soon.

Sorry, I have not had time to update progress on the "Restoration" of Saba.

Basically I wanted the Restoration to get underway. [Restoration ≠ Repair, so I now am thinking this way]
Progressive Insurance Company [PIC] is saying this to me!!
______
Insurance...
So Far it has been a great experience with PIC.
They want the Owners to be part of the loop, but kinda like "relax while Dry Docks and PIC do the work"

We have received the first check from PIC for full hull/rudder and some other thing restoration.

So we got the $$$ and pay when we are satisfied. Part one only.:):):)
_____
The biggest pain is detailing personal items damaged on the boat.
Essentially a spread sheet with lost items, when bought, receipts and new cost replacement.

My guess is no where close to policy our limit. Very tedious, but Step by Step.;)

More updates soon...
Jim...

progress is being made (albeit, sloooooowly)
Admiral Sue asked the Owner of PCYW, "How long will this restoration work take?"
[By the way.. first time Sue had been in the Cabin, since the interior flooding and storm, but had seen my videos]

Owner Ans: Errrr uhhh well [Scratched his head] I errr well it is Winter coming...

Admiral Sue: I just want to know is it ...Seconds, Minutes, Hours or Months!!!

Owner Ans: [Owner gulps] Well 5-6 months. [Y'all SBO folks have not seen the list yet]

Captain Jim: Great, just in time for the beginning of 2021 Sailing Season! [Diplomacy in Action;)]

Owner: breathes a sigh of relief
_____
During the Admiral's, interior review and score card for Jim and his cleaning crew...
1) You missed taking off 2 drawers of wetted Galley utensils.
2) You forgot your tools in the huge drawer by the Genset.
3) She then grabs the 5 Self inflating PFD's and dry clothing items and takes them off the boat. [Note: no water reached there and dry]
4) Hand checks the dryness of her Teak interior
5) Taps her toes on the one, under stained teak flooring.
6) Looked at her brand new 16K BTU AC , installed 3/23/20, This is going to be replaced, Right? [ Yes Ma'am!!! ]
_______
Sue was in a hurry to get her work, but her son Johnny was putting the ladder on is truck, I was putting PFD etc., in my truck.
Then she grabs the Owner and walks with him, back to the boat, out of hearing range.

She points out a few items, bent his ear for ≈5 minutes.

Next day, Jim signs first release to begin Restoration, but notes what the Owner 's first Task to do. [12/2/20 the start!]

(Task 1) Remove temporary patch on starboard side [actually port] to evaluate repairs on all fiberglass work to include deck. Joint damage and severe spider cracks on aft entrance.

Oh My Gosh! Sue told him to fix those spider cracks!!

She shook him up!

So there are some smiles, which does relieve the pain.
Jim...

PS: Claim reported 10/23/20 to Start of work 12/2/20. Not real shabby timing.

Updating what is happening...
1) The Dry Docks guy told PIC to total our boat.:cuss:
2) New Adjustor assigned, but the past adjustor showed up. [Dan]
3) Dan had to check on the boat to see, if it should be totaled.

I was told by PIC, if totaled, we would still be the owner.

Here is the kicker....
They would still pay off full policy - salvage value.

Tic tock tic tock, we waited on Dan to hear back on the Salvage value...
Long story, but the Salvage Value of most sailboats is about...

Ten percent of average market price!

Why?
Who needs my mast, life lines, winches, windlass, anchors, etc.

So they are NOT totaling our boat!

We have now got a new increased adjustment from Dan.
Very close to what I thought, with just one minor omission.
Dan remarked we want the hull in pristine condition when done, and PIC has issued our new policy for 2021 too.

Next step is to fix the hull...
Jim...

PS: This caused the time delay.

The RUDDER...
My New Rudder is on Order from...

SailboatOwners.com store

The service is great!
_____
The OEM Rudder

RudderDraw.jpeg

The shaft is Fiberglass with 2 Rudder Bearings. We never had wear or play on those bearings. Diver verified it by standing on the bottom and attempted to rock the Rudder at various angles thru the 48° Port/Starboard swing.

Joe Kerr, from SBO "1 to One Service", was very knowledgeable about the Rudder design and installation.

To make the new Rudder, we will ship our Old Rudder [Picture in post #18], Freight Collect, to them.

But since no Rudder of this Hunter size and age had been made for 18 years, the new Rudder has a Stainless Steel Shaft with new Bearing Points for the new Rudder Bearings.

The old Rudder will be 3D modeled to match the Shape!!

The first PIC Adjustment to the boat's restoration had $345 for a new rudder. :yikes:

Now PIC newest Adjustment is the Quote from SBO, with Shipping, at ≈$4800. Not installed.
______
Our boat was put in the yard in the Damaged Boats waiting area, no power or water.

Boat will now be moved adjacent to their Repair building, not inside since our mast was 6 foot too tall in be inside it.

Dry Docks wanted to step our mast, but I said no way !
But the Hull repair, exclaimed the Dry Docks owner, Jimmy.

I said wait till Spring's warm weather.;)

Now we will have power and water to keep the process moving forward.
_________
We did install and new Start Battery [$100 Adjusted], which also runs the Main Bilge pump, Electric Winch [Fig 4, Item 36] and Windlass [Fig 4, Item 3]. {Figure 4 is on post #40 above}

The Bilge had filled up again from the Sound Insulation on the Genset, draining out slowly.
It took ≈ 30 minutes for our Bilge pump to stop or about 300 gallons pumped out.

The Admiral was on the ground watching the Bilge discharge and noticed it was eroding the ground near a boat Support.

Quick action, She grabbed a nearby junk foam pad and put it under the discharge stream!

Admiral Sue did it again!!!:thumbup:

The Dry Dock Owner, Jimmy, was impressed too.
______
All the Interior teak is dry and cleaned now.

Step by Step...
Jim...

PS: The Start Battery [Engine and Genset] is separated from the House Batteries and was Solar Panel Trickled charged, OEM.
