It is 27th of October... I had mentioned this was a planned day to haul the boat. Not happening.

Here is the update.

Where has the year gone? As I shared in post #1 the plans for 2022 were to cruise the waters of BC. All my planning and preparation was progressing with out a hitch... til I looked at my engine and thought I should make sure it was ready for this trip into the wilderness of the Pacific NW. March 18th was the beginning of the end of my planned 2022 adventure. With the help of a mechanic I opened the engine cover and adjusted the valves.

Here we are. The weather is changing. Fall temps have turned trees too bright colors and boats are being prepared for winter. I should be out sailing.

Amid this activity I am about to get my motor rebuilt and back into the boat. A chat with my mechanic (who is now dealing with covid after a vacation to Hawaii) updated me yesterday.

The parts for the engine have been ordered. They are due for delivery mid week. Evidently I am to assume the machinist did their thing. I was not provided details. I will inquire. The rebuild is scheduled to start about the 1st and the mechanic believes it will be ready to install the 7th or 8th. We are thinking that crane to lift the engine and transmission back into the boat will make our lives a little easier.

As a side note, it is interesting that the rebuilt engine and transmission will cost about 2 times the cost of the suit of sails I bought 2 years ago. As has been said Old Boats are not cheap. What you may save in initial expense comes back to bite you in maintenance that was deferred by previous owners. That said, I am still enjoying the ride and the adventures I have had as a result of buying the boat when I did.

There is lots to do to reconnect all that we pulled apart. I am by no means out of the woods, but I have progressed along the path and think there is light at the end of the tunnel. Praying it is not the light of an express train heading my way.

Positive vibes. Will let you know what happens

The boat is to hauled the 4th and tentatively splashed on the 12th.

Best wishes, John. Boat projects can be a real bear. It's a fine sense of relief and accomplishment when they are behind us.

WHAT A BUMMER>... Dammit Jim...

Here we are 3 days from my long awaited haul out. The forward looking weather signs say... Winter is coming early this year. :banghead:

Haul out days was scheduled to start on Nov 4th. Wind forecast is for winds 10-12knts gusts 23-26 knts. Not optimum for hauling a sail boat out of the water and driving it to the yard.

Then there are the temps and moisture forecast. Temps forecast from 7-10 Nov for marina yard High 39 low 25. Rain, ice and 2-4" of snow. Not the week to be trying to paint the bottom. Dammit - Jim...

On the good news, the machinist says he was able to polish up the parts that looked bad, and the engine rebuild kit from England arrived. So the news from my mechanic is positive as to a successful rebuild. We discussed the reinstall plan. Rain/snow is no time to be trying to drop the engine back into the boat.

SO... SV Hadley is on hold for a few more weeks. Hoping now for a mild winter with a week or so of warmup temps (plus 40) so I can get the work done.
Sure I know that sounds sacrilegist to skiers and snow mobile riders....

Aint that the truth.
Looking like winter is on a similar path. Thank you La Niña.
You guys should be seeing a cold chilling rain next week. The Yukon High Pressure cell appears to be setting up to give us an early snowfall and chilly November. Maybe skiing by our Thanksgiving.

The saga continues.

The block has been to the machinists and been returned. Awaiting the head. The rebuild parts have arrived. Here are images of the engine parts at the mechanic’s shop from today.
First a look at the old pistons. The bad ones.

Those pistons sure look rough!

the cylinder walls were OK? Or did they have to sleeve them?

Glad to see you are making progress!

Yes we have new sleeves with O-rings to be pressed into the block.

New pistons and rings. The new rings are a5 ring improved design.

New exhaust system.

The mechanic has rebuilt several 4.107’s which is helpful. There are a couple of issues to avoid.

Is a recently rebuilt Perkins less likely to lose oil eventually??
