But why the Mrs. would like a namesake that is slow, beamy and displaces a lot is a mystery to me.
Well, because she would be the sleek fast one with graceful lines, as opposed to the slow, beamy boat.

My first cabin type sailboat was an Oday 23...didn't have a name on it, and I sailed if for a couple of years without one...every time someone asked me what my boats name was, I would say "I've got to name this boat someday." Finally the light bulb went off and "SomeDay" she became.

I lost a Hunter 33 in Katrina named "Reality" - as in back to reality, so of course I bought another one the next year and named it "Perseverance"

Names have to mean something to you or they don't work

Years ago, there was a sailboat at the Seattle Yacht Club named "Sea Lingus". Somewhat clever, but perhaps in questionable taste...
Why might it be "questionable"?

The name Aer Lingus is an anglicisation of the Irish form "Aer Loingeas", which means "Air Fleet".

So, a boat at a yacht club is named "Sea Fleet" — more cunning than connie?

---

We named one of our boats "Aignéis" which is Gaelic for "Agnes", my wife's mother's name. Her father was a proud of his Irish heritage. It was a wonderful way to honor both of my wife's parents who had died before I met my wife.

hello all

For my sailboats, I let my wife name them... my 67 Kittiwake 23 is names 'Xing Fu'... it is pronounced sing foo... which translates from Chinese as 'happiness' or 'happy boat', depending on what part of china you are from.. yes, my wife is Chinese...

She has not named our new 71 Morgan 35' sailboat yet... i await her inspiration on this...

sincerely

saw the t-shirt!

One I HATE is "Breakin' Wind."

Wonder why? :)
Saw the entire crew of a boat name that at a beach party once and they all had T-shirts, the graphics included a pic of the boat surrounded by cloud-like puffs. (no stink lines or green clouds though)

Good name! Just curious. How would you pronounce that, Jess?

My dad had a friend whose boat was named the "Po Ho". I always liked it.

On a related note, "Fydolla Ho" would be good too.

Neither would would ever pass muster with the Admiral though ... :(

hello all

my wife hasn't taught me to pronounce it yet... but she is teaching me... Chinese (mandarin) can be hard to learn sometimes... but I am having fun learning from her... she is patient with a dumb old American like me...

Before you name your boat it is worthwhile to think about when and how you will use the name. For example if you are on the radio calling a marina for a slip it is very convenient to have a name that is fairly short, easily understood, and easy to spell. Also, think about how a mayday call would sound from your boat... "mayday mayday mayday" this is "kids college fund, kids college fund, kid's college fund". You probably don't want to have to waste time spelling and respelling a gaelic word the the 20 yr old radio operator.
-just my two cents.

This little 8' Sabot was given to me by a neighbour who had not used it for the last 20 years. It took me more than a few beers to fix the wood work and to come up with an appropriate name (after all beer makes you smart... right?). So, a little boat and a "smart" sailor equal ITTYACHT. One other name that came to mind but didn't stick was BELOWME (sorry guys, it’s the beer)
