Beneteau 373 Newport
My first two sailboats were named Mermaid - so my email has been merman. Then I got together with my wife who had an Ensign named Blue Moon - because when she bought it she said she would win a race " once in a ..." ( by the way she went on to win an Ensign national race - still only one with an all female crew to do so).
So, we sold two boats and needed to name the "new" one we bought together = Lunea, lun for moon and ea, the Babylonian for mermaid.
On to the present boat - it's a Beneteau so Sirène - French mermaid.

My last boat I named Irish Wake. Wife put the kabash on the dancing skeleton. When I named it, it was the only one on the CG documentation list.
My current boat is the Dea Latis. Celtic goddess of beer.

My wife named our boat she is a Canadian and I'm an American we were going over names and she decided on UsCa witch is United States and Canada the abreberations. are Us And Ca so she put them together and now the boat is UsCa she just loves it. At least it makes her happy and that is what it counts if the wife likes it go with it. Make them as happy as you can with the boat then when you spend more money on it than her she really doesn't mind it is her Boat to.

My wife named our Catalina 250 "Compass Rose" and I like that but what should the dinghy's name be? It is amazing how few people know what a compass rose is! Chief

Deviation?
Knowing Jim and Carole, I think that's fitting and proper, at least for him!!! :)

Our boat's name is Aquavite (aqua = water; vite is fast in French. Our dinghy is Aquatender.

O'Day Daysailor 17 Nevis MN
When my wife and I were dating we purchased a badly neglected Sunfish. She painted it red white and blue with stars and stripes, then named it "Forever" referring to the song "Stars and Stripes 'Forever'" and indicating that we would be together Forever.

Living in the desert we named our next boat, (Hobie-18) "Desert Star."

Being Norwegian my wife wanted a Norwegian name for our next boat (Venture-222) and came up with "Elsker Vann" meaning Loves Water. I was going to name our dinghy "Little Vann" but then we sold Elsker Vann so it wouldn't have the same meaning.

Our current boat (Macgregor 26D) we named "Miss Behavin'."

I think aqua vitae in latin is distilled spirits or "Water of Life." Seems like a good name for a boat.

Hunter 25.5 SYR
Contrary to the icon picture on the left, my Hunter 25.5 was named "between the sheets" - clever in its own way, I guess, but not really what I wanted. Its been on the hard for a couple years so I figure it OK to try a renaming ceremony. Scraped off the lettering, walked around the ship, counter-clockwise, three times saying "You will no longer be known as between-the-sheets" and will leave it un-named until warm weather in Spring. Then, I will choose "Zephyr" (thought that "S. Thompson" might get a chuckle or two, but most people would miss the reference)

I'm wondering if it's a good idea to use a name the no one else understands or should it be something people can read and appreciate as well. I see car vanity tags, that instead of a clever play on words, appear to mean nothing. I always think, you spent good money on that?!
We (the admiral) named our 26S 'Cuivienen". It's from JRR Tolkien's Silmarillion. You have to be a hard core fan to know what it means.
We left our Hunter's name alone. It means little to us but it sounds nice - Bella Luna. It wasn't something we couldn't live with.

From Wikipedia -
Cuiviénen
The land where the Quendi or Elves awoke. It means in Quenya 'water (nén) of awakening (cuivië)' and it is said to have been on the shore of a large gulf in the inland Sea of Helcar in the far east of Middle-earth

One I HATE is
Several summers ago a sailboat pulled into a transient slip with the name "Cream Puff" in large print on the side. Lots of catty remarks ensued originating from the ill informed local usuals. Things quickly quieted down when the 6' 5", 240 lbs skipper, come award winning pastry baker, step ashore.

I overheard the Canadian CG responding to a vessel's call on ch 16 asking if there was a need for assistance. Once it was ascertained that the vessel was indeed okay the CG requested that the skipper call them immediately by cell phone. I would have loved to been able to listen in on that discussion.

Oh, the name of the vessel was "Going Overboard".

Many years ago, when I bought my first boat, people said name it after someone you love. So I named it for the admiral and called it 'Space Cadet'. I thought back on this a few years ago when naming my current boat. The admiral's name is Mary Jane - I couldn't do it!

When I first saw you boat name I thought it was named after the Norwegian liquor Aquavit. My favorite brand is "Linie" which is shipped over the dateline and back.
