What's your favorite boat name?

No idea what my favorite sailboat name would be! The original owner of my Mac 26s wanted to call the boat "standard deviation". He put on 5 letters, so the boat is named "stand". Think I need a name change! lol

Before you name your boat it is worthwhile to think about when and how you will use the name. For example if you are on the radio calling a marina for a slip it is very convenient to have a name that is fairly short, easily understood, and easy to spell. Also, think about how a mayday call would sound from your boat... "mayday mayday mayday" this is "kids college fund, kids college fund, kid's college fund". You probably don't want to have to waste time spelling and respelling a gaelic word the the 20 yr old radio operator. -just my two cents.
We always used this logic to name our kids. When naming a child, you should try the whole name out while screaming it from the back porch (like your mom did when you were in big trouble)

We've named our last 3 boats and have one in the works (which will remain nameless for now).

Our first boat a Hunter 25 was the "Cheryl Ann" (named for the admiral) was easy, 2nd boat a Hunter 28 "French Temper", was originally listed but rejected but kept sticking around and so became the obvious choice. The Admirals 1951 17' Chris Craft is "French Kiss"

All of our boats get named, besides the copious amounts of alcohol required to define a name, there just isn't any more fun than a formal naming ceremony and party. I've held three and each one is better than the one before and all of our club members hold major parties for their naming ceremonies as well.

my wife said to me "buy the damn boat." Gotta love her for that by the way. We almost named our boat that but thought we'd soon tire of that name.
You could have named it That's What She Said :)

Anyway, I saw a work boat named Orn'ry Female Dog (admin won't let me type the actual name) at Chesapeake Beach, MD. Maybe past due for a re-power?

I searched a boat name database and was surprised to see that no one has named his boat Lazy Guy . If i'm not mistaken, isn't that the name for a spinaker guy that's not currently being used?

Or how about Portmanteau for a motorsailer? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portmanteau

By the analogy of portmanteau, the correct boat name for a motorsailer would be Compound Word. Or we could make motorsailer into a portmanteau by saying mosailor. Or mosail. Anyone else want to make a better portmanteau out of motorsailer?
Motailer? Or Motler? Or Motail? Yes, I think I like Motail. ;-)

I am planning to name my boat "Jibe Turkey." I came up with it myself, but I'm worried as soon as I do, I will realize that my idea is not original. Anyone see any "Jibe Turkeys" out there?

The Litter Box...The boat we race was given a spinnaker in our first season, did not realize that cats had been pissing on it for the last 5 years. The skipper threw it down below then closed the boat up for a week in 90+ temps. When he opened the hatch boards he exclaimed "GOOD GOD, IT SMELLS LIKE A LITTER BOX IN HERE" the name stuck.

How about ... dang furl? (I had to use dang because of the profanity filter :)

I also like this one... not sure who's boat it is...

What about the gay pilot who named his sailboat, Flying Seaman?
Not sure about the gay reference but it might work for a Proctologist:yikes:

We named our Mac "Silent Running" because it was one of my favorite old si-fi movies, and a possible sailing inference works well also. Our Victoria 18 was just born to be named "Tweety" because it's little and bright yellow, plus the personality also fits perfectly with the tweety and sylvester cartoon of old.

Not as "cute" as some, but meaningful, 50 years ago I was a kid growing up in Singapore, had to take a foreign language in high school, fought the school and was allowed to take the Malay language, knew back then if I ever did get a sailboat, she would be named Rajawali. The Malay word for royal eagle or eagle of the sea. Two years ago, I got her and did.

My mother (god rest her soul) always threatened to rename dad's boat -- all wet -- because it was a dream for so long......
