That sounds like a plan to start with Mike thanks for the info.  Is the Marina dog friendly?  And second ?. We were having a debate this weekend with the other scout leaders about the water being brackish that far up the Hudson? We had aruguments all over the spectrum but non of us really knew for sure. So is the water brackish or fresh at the Newburg Beacon Bridge? And were is the freash water mark typically. Thanks again Scott "On Eagles Wings"

Scott,The Hudson River (esturary) is in fact brackish as far as the Newburgh/Beacon Bridge. The salt line varies from year to year depending on the amount of rain/ stream runoff. Sometime the salt line goes as far as Poughkeepsie (in real drought conditions) which is bad for the City , as they use Hudson River water for drinking.At the end of the season last year, after removing all the boats, MANY boats at our YC had saltwater barnacles on their bottoms.It was also a banner year for blue claw crabs.Our Yacht Club has a spot for doggies to walk around( many of the older members are standoffish to dogs on the YC grounds, but I think I can find a place for pets. They must be leashed and walked off the club grounds)

Thanks for resoving that bit of trivia about the salinity of the Hudson. I will pass it onto the scouts Wed. night.  As for the dog she is great on the boat. She is well mannored and friendly to all. We are always responsible about her waste. I don't think she will be with us the entire time. Just wanted to ask first. Do we need to book the boat launch with your marina and if so how do we do that? Thanks again Scott "On Eagles Wings"

I'm going to make arrangements to stay at Newport on the way up and on the way back,maybe leaving Free Spirit there till the following weekend if I run out of time to get back to the south shore or maybe head towards the LI Sound and leave her in Sea Cliff where I work,also when did you think you'll be heading up the Hudson? Friday early am? I like the idea of a flotilla up the Hudson

I will take care of everything.

When you get there, I will be there to help you hoist your boat into the water (with the Melges 24 I race on, this is the ONLY way to get it into the water) It is a do it yourself operation ( have you ever hoisted your boat before???)

No I have not

When I first got the boat 3 years ago I had it hoisted so I could get the trailer welded. The folks at the marina did it for me and let it sit in the hoist for the day. I look forward to learning and meeting many of you folks. Thanks. Scott "On Eagles Wings"

Flotilla

Bob,Good to hear. I'm sure you'll like Newport. And if you think you might be leaving the boat there for a week, ask if they'll give you a rate other than the standard transient day rate. Who knows? You might catch an unexpected bargain.As for departure to head upriver, I haven't gotten quite that far yet in my planning. However, as Mike already pointed out, the trip would either be one lo-o-ong day or two more reasonable-length ones. If your schedule allows the more leisurely trek, I guess I'd be leaning in that direction myself. Of course, with a fair wind and following current, you can easily do 9 knots SOG or better on the Hudson (I've done it).Also, a lot depends on whether or not I'm making the trip upriver with Janis on board. If she goes for traveling there by boat, then the 2-day trip is almost a given. (She doesn't like really long days on the water.) If it's just me, there's a greater likelihood that I'll try doing it all in one shot.When I buy my 2008 copy of Eldridge's, I'll check the currents for the appropriate day(s).Petes/v EmmieLou (O-322)Little Silver, NJ

On my to do list today is

Go to WM and buy a new Eldridge so I can plan my run from FI inlet to JerseyThen there's Mary and when can she get off,I might be bringing the boat early in the week and then taking a train home then coming back with the family to head up river. There's more people coming that have to go past Newport to get up the Hudson so I'm sure will have some company.

Whether they're fellow O'day owners or not, I could go for a mighty flotilla heading up the Hudson. It'd make for a pretty picture -- that is, for anyone who happens to be standing on the shoreline.I don't know when Jan will find out about her vacation, so I'll probably wind up planning the trip first and asking her to try to fit her schedule around it. random thoughts and poll.

Besides checking out all our boats, eating,drinking, sailing, relaxing, did I say drinking?? I'd like to put together a "sightseeing" bus trip so that no one (wives and children) gets bored. I was thinking either a trip to Hyde Park to see the Vanderbuilt Mansion and FDR Estate (both overlooking the Hudson and close to Chelsea, or a trip to West Point (stopping in Cold Spring on the way home to window shop all the antique shops)Any thoughts?? Comments?? Suggestions?? Would this be something people would be interested in??(ther's also a woman's day race on Saturday and I'm SURE that if any women wanted to go out on a boat and race with other women, they'd all be welcome....and wanted!!!

Time to start a new rOnDAYvous thread, maybe once a month? Glad to see some new people taking an interest. What's the story on the Richs? The last I heard, Sharon Marie was up for sale, bummer! Getting ready to Google Newport Marina. Mike, do you really think the wimminfolk get bored, although a trip to West point is SO much better than going aground opposite it. I am getting so psyched. I don't even know if the have heard of Eldridge's here, but I'll get my hands on one somehow. Went sailing Saturday, Sunday there was almost no water in the harbor. I haven't sailed since Nov. 1st. BUT I'm heading down to Miami in March and will sail 1 day, Charleston SC in April to race at Charleston RW and the following weekend in Annapolis for the NOODS regatta..........so VERY SOON. Then I'll need to do some much needed work on DaCapo.
