doug and bernie show

I have subscriptions to both sail and crusing word and enjoy them both. I would like to see a different slant or some other writers as well as the everpresent bunch that have graced the pages for several years. I'm sure the mags get tons of articles mailed to them as well as new ideas about everything under the sun and, its hard to put a new shine on an old news. There are soooo many things that could be written about, that may only interest a few sailors. I still trust most of the editors when it comes to repair and replacement. But, those repairs never happen to me. I dont think I'll ever replace the mast on my boat with a carbon fibre stick. or replace my nuclear generator/watermaker/left handed hydrolic fluxgate web portal. My universal 5411 is working just fine. I dont think I drool enough to read Lats and Ats.

What's your favorite printed sailing magazine? Do you stick with the tried and true, like Cruising World, Sail, and Sailing? Or do you prefer a more hands-on approach like Good Old Boat? Does the Latitudes and Attitudes cult capture you, or perhaps the gloss and grace of Yachting? Maybe your local sailing magazine has all you really need. Latitude 38, 48 Degrees North, and Soundings come to mind. Share your reading preferences here then vote in the Quick Quiz at the bottom of the home page.

Lats and Atts

Favorites are Lats and Atts and Soundings. Cruising world is okay. I stay away from the racing rags and the ones that have a lot of ice and snow sailing. Bill Bell Bella

early early subscription renewal

If Sail magazine gets any earlier in hounding it's customers to renew they will have to start bugging people before they are born. Man are they annoying!

Ditto

I occasionally read a sailing magagzine or two but I have found that subscribing is a waste - always the same old stuff rehashed. I agree with Mike about Sail - don't ever subscribe and then drop it because they will hunt you down and bug you incessantly.

Sailing mags

i like Cruising world and good old boat. i think cruising world is the best mag about sailing. the only thing wrong is pretty well all mags only talk about is the big boats 35+.

Cruising World

Cruising World helps me relived some of my past experiences while the boat is on the hard for the winter and also helps me with some refit projects.

Just two

I enjoy Sail and Practical Sailor. One for the stories and photos and the other for the plain and direct information.

I'm a junkie...

I like quite a few--favorites are "Sail" and "Good Old Boat." We also get "Sailing," "Cruising World" and "Lats and Atts." Of course, I always pick up "Spinsheet" and "Nor'easter" when we're down on the Bay.

Magazines

Sail, Practical Sailor and Soundings, all for various reasons. One can go back for specific articles, and share them with other boating friends. Plus I agree this web site is good.

small craft advisor

Some sailing mags leave me with the impression that I buy a reasonable quality, entry level sailboat for half a million dollars or so. Guys who can, or would want to buy the $500k starter boat probably would not be interested in "Small Craft Advisor." For us mere mortals however, it is well written, insightful, and interesting. They focus on trailerable sailboats. jk

Good Old Boat

Good Old Boat is a great mag. I wish it weren't so expensive, but the fact is that most major magazines (like Cruising World and Sail) production costs are paid by advertisers, not the readers. So naturally, whenever a mag has to make a tough choice, the advertiser gets priority. The unfortunate result is that content generally suffers. When it comes to folks of more average means like myself, GOB is a much, MUCH better value, even though it's more expensive. BG

Good Ones

In my opinion, Lattitudes & Attitudes is probably the best one. But then, I like Cruising World and Sail too - even with Sail's constant begging. The one I'm disappointed in is Practical Sailor. I subscribed, expecting to be able to peruse their archived articles. No dice, as a subscriber, you must pay for those articles like everyone else. Why pay for a subscription to a mag like that? I subscribed for a year, and nothing I was interested in was written about. That's to be expected, but at least Consumer Reports lets you read their archived articles as a subscriber.
