I owe you one !!!! Do you need any brackets made from stainless? I've got the run of the shop and all the stainless I can scrounge from the scrap bin.
We were planning to weld a washer on a 1" stainless nipple. You saved me a bunch of time and money.
I need the get a new Defender catalog. I keep forgetting about them. I'll need to increase the hole a 1/6" but the sink is all fiberglass. Nothing to it.
I spent some time on the Forespar website. They have a very clever low cost lifting crane. Check out video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1gzWg_0aDzE&feature=player_embedded
The line is lead on the inside of the crane so there is no force to swivel the crane as you lit. (my new favorite website)
I had the same problem with a camper sink years ago. Glad it will solve the problem! No stainless needed just now but I'll keep in mind! thanks!

Faucet replacement for head.

Mark, fellow Oday 39 owner of Sirius hailing from Detroit found this faucet with the proper diverter valve. It's plastic but sure looks many times better than the faucets on my boat. Photos below show the pitted faucet that came with the boat (in the aft head)and the new brushed chrome look (in the forward head. I'll replace the aft faucet when I get back there. For now I'm varnishing the v-birth and forward head. Faucets are $15 each at http://mobilehomepartsstore.com

Wood bleach and varnish

I mentioned a few posts back that there is a DYI wood bleach equal to the commercial stuff. I found it . It's from Zinnser. They make all sorts of wood strippers. It's a two component product using the same chemicals as the commercial bleaches (sodium hydroxide and hydrogen peroxide) This is not for cleaning the teak on deck. Use this to lighten stains after you stripped the wood. Notice the dark spots on the first two photos. One or two applications and these spots are gone. (I'll get after photos)

The third photo (click on photos to enlarge) is my start on the interior. 3 coats of varnish so far. I'm using Minwax since it's interior and a gallon is half the price of a quart of marine varnish. Minwax does not have the strong UV stabilizers so the finish is a bit lighter. I used Epifaines clear varnish on the doors. It built film a bit faster but I think Minwax is much easier to apply.
I will apply Epifaines rubbed effect for the final coat.

Help!! Looking for a quiet fan

My wife and I were at the boat looking at the storage situation in the forward v-birth. Work up there is nearly complete. Knowing she does not like fan noise I turned on the 12 volt fan and asked if she could put up with on a hot night. She said she could if she was mowing the lawn. I think I need to find the quietest fan possible. Any one have a suggestion??

We bought one of these last year. Runs of 4D batteries, no hard wiring. Batteries lasted all season with use on the weekends and very quiet.

http://www.caframo.com/marine/marine_products_batteryfans_minimaxdeluxe737.php

Looks good. The fan locations are all wired so I rather use the wiring but I see from the website you sent the company has 12 volt fans as well. This looks encouraging.

By the way. I'm near Milwaukee and hope to spend a few seasons up your neck of the woods. Likely hauling there for the winter at least once. I hope I can get some suggestions from you once I get this thing in the water.

Thanks for the help with the fans.

Layout options for the 39

With varnishing well underway , I now need to put some thought into the layout. The doors of the 39 can be placed in various locations to meet different needs. My wife and I have not spent a night on the boat so any suggestions would be most helpful.

I copied a few layouts that I have seen on other 39's I thought this may be good for discussion. I'm sure there are many more.

Click on the photo to enlarge

Layout #1 (at the top) This gives the v-berth a private entrance to the forward head. I also reduced the size of the v-berth cabin by placing the salon door forward ("C") Guests can access the forward head without going into the v-berth cabin.

Layout #2 We are leaning towards this layout. Salon door to the v-berth cabin in moved aft so the cabin is larger ("A"). Forward head is accessed only from the v-berth cabin ("C"). alt door to the forward head is converted to a wall ("B"). Aft head is used by the guests in the aft port cabin. Aft starboard cabin is for kids or storage ("D"). Guests in sleeping in the salon settee can use the aft head.

Layout #3 Condo layout. Can sleep 9 with one head accessed by everyone. Salon settee berth is not private but is anything on the boat? Find a slip close to the marina bathrooms.

Layout #4 similar to the condo but the forward v-berth has a private entrance to the head.

Again there are likly more . Anyone with an idea?

If you are at all mechanically inclined you can pick up a 120 mm or larger computer fan and a potentiometer. Most computer fans are pretty quiet under 900 rpm

Computer fans sounds interesting but I think I would spend a week making a frame and mount for it. It diffidently has the noise level I'm looking for .

You definitely could. You could also Velcro it in place to test with. I used on onmy refrigeration unit. Most times I'm not even sure it's running

I looks like someone made the frame for me.

I'm very disappointed in Practical Sailor . They tested many fans but never reported sound levels.

You are right on target. The Asian computer industry must treat a quiet fan as the holy grail. There are hundreds to choose from. The sailing industry can not possibly put the research money into fans that the computer industry can. Everything I purchase from this point will be designed around the computer fan.
The Vetus fan is Ok when compaired to other boating fans but no where as quiet as the computer fans available. (as you found) I'll likely switch it out as the shell is designed to allow easy removal of the fan.

Here is a vetus fan I will install under a UFO vent (link below). Any comments?

Selling the O'day 22

I've been quiet but very busy. Used up a gallon and a 1/4 and not yet reached the two rear cabins. Two to three coats on everything. Will apply the Epifanes rubbed effect varnish today. I'll then take pictures. The gloss finish looks nice but I know it will look many time better(IMO) when a get the rubbed effect on it.

It's time to thin the herd. I don't have time to get the 22 in the water so it's time to sell it. It was a great project boat. People tell me it's the prettiest boat on the lake. They don't realize it's like one of the least expensive. I'm selling it for the price of a new propane range and cushions for the 39. This is not an ad. Just a note to anyone thinking of getting into the sport. Don't get hung up with big boats. There are great boats in the 20 to 24 foot range that have nice cockpits for sailing with two couples. I overhauled my interior. I would never to that again on a boat this size. It's nothing more than a sail locker. However, after modification, the v-birth in this boat is larger then the 39.

A new look for the O'day aluminum corners

I've been kicking around a few ideas about the O'day corners. One day I'm thinking hide them with a color similar to the wood the other make them stand out.
I've decided to polish them.
The top piece will be painted a mat black to match the stand offs. It can not be polished because looks to be pot metal.

These corners are painted. At least on my boat. It looks to be a high quality architectural coating.

Give me a few days and I'll upload pictures of the finished product.

Overhead wall lights

This worked out real well.
The O'day 39 has a set of overhead hand rails running on each side of the salon. There is a 1/2 base with a flat edge on the outboard side of each rail. I placed 12 volt led ribbon lighting on this outboard edge. The ribbon has a pressure sensitive adhesive on it. It's wired into a dimmer for each side.

Interior finishing in the mail salon and forward is complete

I finished all drawers and doors last winter while they were laying flat. I'm finishing the rest of the interior vertically in 85 deg and high humidity. Sure will be interesting when I put the two together. Anyway I'm nearly done with just the two aft cabins to go. They are storing materials and equipment so I'm going to leave them for now.
I've got three layers of Minwax clear quick dry varnish and one or two Epifanes rubbed effect on everything. I purchased a brush last night to do the final coat on the bulkhead and the stairs. I think it does a bit better job than the foam brushes but clean-up is a pain. I'll go back to the foam.

The salon table has three coats of the minwax. I will leave it gloss for a bit of contrast.

Back the the fan discussion..
I was in Walmart the other day a noticed a large selection of battery operated fans much like Scott B's http://forums.oday.sailboatowners.com/member.php?u=73967 suggestion. http://www.caframo.com/marine/marine_products_batteryfans_minimaxdeluxe737.php
I'm going to purchase a few different ones and give them a test. $12 to $15 each . I don't think I can go wrong. The store I was at had these fans running at each checkout. I could not hear them but the store is noisy.

Speaking of noisy, I have the Air-X wind generator going so the boat is now completely off the grid. The air-x makes a very strange sound. I'll have it shut off whenever I'm in a marina or crowded anchorage. I'm thinking of purchasing these quiet blades http://www.bluemarinestore.com/silent-power-blades.html but I think there may be many choices in the future.

It looks like finishing off the interior with new hull liner and new fabric for the settees is next.

As I said in the previous post, I think I'll keep the table gloss for some contrast.
I'm not sure if the wind generator is working. I need a nice windy day for testing.

aft cabins next then hull liner.

Save you some grief

I'm the second 39 owner (that I know of) that ventured into the O'day Bermuda triangle or in other terms the Starboard tab next to the nav station.

One owner (to remain nameless) knocked out the overhead and port lights through bolting some track and accidentally drilling through wires. This tab is so convenient I was lured into thinking I could run wires to the new ribbon lights (check a few posts back) in it.
Nothing doing . While I managed not to drill through any existing wires, the tab is too full of junk (stray glass, etc) to run anything in it. I tried feeding wire alone and also tried a wire puller. Nothing got through.
I'm a lot like Joe (25 years later), http://forums.oday.sailboatowners.com/showthread.php?t=123244 I have no qualms about drilling a hole, filling and then spraying gel coat. The match is very easy and a bit of sanding followed by buffing makes it all disappear.
As you can see from my photo taken on one of my early attempts to get something through, I drilled two access holes yet no luck. The photo shows two pair. I tried one pair and then the wire puller. Nothing got through.

So here is my solution.

  • Back off the screws going through the bulkhead and into the tab.
  • Wedge the wire between the tab and the bulkhead.
  • Re tighten the bulkhead screws.
I used Anchor two pair 18 gauge Safety wire. I could have used much smaller wire since this is all LED lighting but I could not find such. I think Anchor needs to catch up a bit.
You may be concerned about wear on the cable. So am I. I'll put a real puny fuse on it and forget about it.
We (later day boat owners) are very fortunate for the new LED lighting. You can safely double up , triple up. ect on any existing wiring since the LED uses a tiny fraction of the current. The ribon lights came with 26 gauge leads and there is a LED every 1/2 inch. Thats 288 LED lights on a 26 gauge wire. And it really lights up the boat with the dimmer cranked up.
So I don't think it's the perfect solution, I do think it looks OK and it won't burn down my boat.

Glad to see I wasn't the only one working today Todd. Funny how a Dad can find joy in working on Father's Day especially when the kids are willing to help. These project boats sure do offer more than just an individual source of pride. They also offer a wonderful way for a Dad and their offspring to bond. I'll be contacting you about the LED strips as soon as I square away the electrical system. A strip of alternate red and white strips would be handy for that little extra light with night lighting as well. Lookin' good Panta Rei.

Fathers day on the project boat

When I stopped in to see Joe's progress. http://forums.sbo.sailboatowners.com/showthread.php?t=123244 it was obvious that this is more than Joe's project. The whole family has great pride in this project. (Actually in Joe) The kind of person Joe is reads through his thread very easily. Great guy great family.

This may be a good time to discuss something I read in posts on Joe's thread and is something I get from my 39 buddies. Just Go Sailing...
For me, it's not about how fast I can get the boat in the water and I'm a bit concerned about that. I read about Eagle Scouts that lose direction after working years to achieve their award. Nothing left to do.... Just go sailing does not require hours of research and planning refurb jobs do. This work is a very enjoyable portion of the project. So for me, just go sailing will involve the same planning and research as this project does. I intend to sail two or three weeks a year starting from Wisconsin out the great lakes to the Bahamas. Most will be with wife and family but some will be hardcore all nighters with the guys designed to make some progress. I will take as much if not more planning since the boat will be hauled at each stopping point and a support trailer will need to be constructed to haul jack stands and return gear for storage. Holding tank modifications will be made and instruments added as the boat approaches salt water. Just go sailing is something I can do every day. Projects like this are needed to keep me going as my son takes over our company.

So back to you Joe, What do you have in store once YOT hits the water?
