Well, I finally connected with a diver and had the swing keel reinstalled 2 weeks ago... HOOOOORRRAAAAAYYYYY. It was only a 30 min job, and now back to sailing on the Sound. Great wind (too much some days), the water is still in the 60s, and "NO" boat traffic (or at least much reduced).

The swing keel needs some additional work...but that's for the off season; it's functional for now.

Did i read that right you installed the swing keel while in the water?!? I just replaced mine, but did it during a haul out.

Yup, That's Right

inarathree,

Sure thing !! It took two divers and a relativley calm day by the dock with me inside with the nuts and washers and accepting the up/down haul cable through the trunk. The Keel only weighs in at about 30-40 lbs submerged so the second diver was only there to steady the keel and assist with screwdriver work. All in ~30 minutes.

Normally I have my boat on a mooring, but tied up tight to the dock was much better. (by the way, it was the same dock that "Practical Sailor" does its bottom paint and anchor chain tests on the East Coast (Long Island Sound).)

I love this fall wind !!!

OK, so its the end of the season up here in New England, so I hauled out the H22 boat only to find that the swing keel had failed COMPLETELY, and I was just sailing her last week. It must have been low-low tide and that submerged pipe at my mooring that led to the ultimate failure. Good thing that the ballast (1300#) is in the bilge and not in the swing keel or I would have gotten a big surprise last week sailing !! I guess the PO's repair work on the keel wasn't up to the task of 20-30 kts winds on the mooring; now I'm left to do a complete replacement using Foss Foam !!

It'll wait 'til next spring...have one last daughter to put through the last year of college and a new swing keel is not real high on the list these days. I know some of you have used Foss for swing keel replacements....any "yeas" or "nays" on the quality of their work ??

SeaTR, I replaced my keel with one from Foss. I don't know what to say about the quality. It is what it is. Foss is the OEM for the keel and the rudder, as well as he OEM for most manufactures. Anyway the keel you order now is made from he same mold as the one you lost. I even sent them my bronze bushing, which they installed during manufacturing it. Bob was real easy to work with. Keel and shipping was about $1100.

Thanks inarathree , I think I'll be going through Foss...as soon as I am able (I still have one to finish up in college). In the meantime, I'll be rewiring and reworking from the lightning strike this past September. What's the composition and finish on their product? Have you had yours in service at all this year? Does it require fender washers on either side to keep it aligned / prevent wobbling side-to-side? Any other attributes you can share?

I installed my keel, at the beginning of October, and have sailed every weekend since. I did not install washers only because, when i lost my original keel, I also lost one of the brackets, and had a new pair manufactured. When I installed it there didnt seem to be any play side to side. I only plan on pulling her out every other year, but I may pull her out next summer, to install a knot meter/sounder. (I know that summer may seem odd to pull out a boat, but the winds are really light in the summer on the west coast of FL)

As to the keel, I really dont know what the new one is made out of... It felt like plaster of paris. :p It didnt feel like just plain epoxy, but I am not really a materials expert. I can tell you the old one had some coating over fiberglass, and a really dense foam for the core. Sorry I cant help more than that. I do have some pics of my old keel, it may show what the inside is made of.

You know I just blindly took what Foss gave me and installed it. It makes my boat go straight. That was good enough for me. :) But Bob at Foss was really nice, and I am sure that when you call him, he will tell you anything you want to know. He even said that I could come to the factory and see how they make them. Its only a couple hours up I-75 from here.

Do I have the wrong "Foss" ??

inarathree,
I sent an email to Foss of Calif (FossFoam.com):
The Foss Company
Post Office Box 3698
Newport Beach, CA 92659
....apparently they are the wrong "Foss" as they replied for me to contact Hunter for swing keel replacements (no 'Bob' either).

A search of the internet yielded another "Foss" in Fla (NewRudders.com)
...(inarathree, I should have been reading your reply more thoroughly...i.e., I-75):

Foss Foam Products of Florida, Inc.
7060 Highway 41 North,
Williston, FL 32696

I'm awaiting their reply. Thanks for your input!
Attached are pix of the failed swing keel.

Funny (or not so funny), but that is exactly how my keel looked.

Sorry I should have been more clear - yes Foss Foam in FL.

The exact person you want to talk to is:

Bob "Al" Walker
www.newrudders.com
PH 352-529-1104
Fax 352-529-1106

newrudders.com is Foss Foam. If you send me a personal note, I can forward over his email address.

Can't wait to order and prep the new swing keel....It'll have to wait until very early spring though for installation. New England winters can be challenging to work in.

Inarathree, how did you prep and paint YOUR new keel from Foss Foam ?? I'll be looking to do all of that work in the cellar (properly ventilated of course) sometime this winter.

I wiped it down with acetone to remove any wax or debris from the mold, painted it with two coats of the two part epoxy primer from West Marine, then coated it with two or three coats of bottom paint, and installed. You will need a tap set to install the pad-eye for the keel line. There is a metal plate inside the keel, about 3/4" under the surface. The tap will put threads into the metal plate so that you can bolt the pad-eye back on. Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks once again, Inarathree. I'm hoping to start this job in early February.

OBTW, what is an "Inara" ??

Well it's a name that I made up... I was driving along down the road and saw this sign for some spa, and thought "that's a stupid name", but the rhythm sounded good, and as I played with the sound I changed a couple of the letters, and came up with Inara.

Then I googled it... Apparently its a hindu goddess, and a character from a sci-fi channel tv show Firefly.

But most importantly it's the name of my boat.

Glad I could help. Have fun with your "winter" project. I will be thinking about it while sailing this weekend, it's suppose to be in the 70's. :)

Good luck. The only mistake i made installing mine was I didnt put enough washers/spacers on my keel pin. So when i am in the slip, and I shift weight back and forth, the keel slides back and forth on the pin, and I can hear it knock. It doesnt seem like it effects tracking while sailing, and i dont know how i could have missed it while installing. Just something for you to watch out for. If I had a trailer I would pull it out and fix it, but i am not going to pay to have it lifted out.

Yes, the constant clanging of the keel movement can be annoying at mooring or anchoring. Even more annoying is the potential it has to wear into the fiberglass trunk and start leaks that your bilge pump(s) / batter(ies) can't keep up with...something to consider... a haul-out MAY be a good investment and piece of mind.

Thanks for the 'heads up'.
How's your "winter" coming along ?? 50-60'F or so??
Still have over a foot of snow /ice on the ground here in S. New England, even with a week of mild temps and periodic rain.

No snow here, but it is cool low to mid 70's all week. No rain expected. 8 to 10 knt winds. It sucks I know, but it is the price we pay for living in FL. If it makes you feel better, I have to be out of town all week, and my wife has me redoing the bathroom, which will take better of a couple weekends.

Hi guys,
Herv, I know what you mean re: "on hold due to other priorities"... I did have a full season (minus 6 weeks of swing keel reworking) on long island sound. I pulled the boat out late in the season (early Nov) only to discover some major damage to the newly reinstalled swing keel...it had failed catastrophically just below the pivot point, warranting a complete replacement (will be ordering through Foss Foam of Fla - OEM for Hunter swing keels - at a cost of ~$1,100).

But, alas, that job is on hold with our last finishing up in college, and coupled with other demands, pushes my time and money away from the Hunter. :-(

...for now, however long "now" is...
Charlie

Back at it again

inarathree,
Well, working on the swing keel again...finally have 'some' time to focus on reinstalling and getting the boat on the water this year.

My keel came from Foss Foam without the pivot point installed. in your 12-11-10 post (below) you don't mention drilling and installing the pivot point tube (PVC ?). A few questions, how did you drill it out? what method of tube installation (cementing/glueing...) was used?

SeaTR

I wiped it down with acetone to remove any wax or debris from the mold, painted it with two coats of the two part epoxy primer from West Marine, then coated it with two or three coats of bottom paint, and installed.
