Yep, cabinet grade in the top of the berth. The other is 1/2 ". Did not want to have sagging.

good!

I was thinking 3/4 all over would be over kill... even for you.... big guy! ;)

so, where did you get cabinet plywood? causeway lumber?
looks like nice alternative to marine ply...

I went with the 3/4 not just for the extra strength. I did not want to have any sagging along the bulkheads. I also wanted the extra material for running screws into. Lastly, the seats are the fillers for the bed and to keep it all uniform I stayed with the thick stuff. Its not that much heavier anyway. The tops of where the old quarter berths were is 1/2 inch.

I am thinking on 2" holes that are sealed with epoxy fillets that will run into the open area around where your feet will be. I will also put in an electric bilge pump to clear any water that comes in. Also, there is a drain on the transom so that I can tilt her way up and drain anything that comes in.
One of the mods I am still thinking on is to add 2, 2" scuppers in the cockpit that drain out the transom to keep the greenies at bay.
I have been using the Small Craft Advisor seaworthy-ness test as a guide as to what to change on the orig. design. When are we gonna have that beer?

Small Craft Adviser is a great mag. I have the Nov/Dec 2011 in my office, on my desk right now. I buy it off of the news stand every chance I get. This mag is dedicated to the small pocket cruiser/ trailer sailor. Great stories, good ideas and a fun read.

That article was great. I love that mag. I just got my January issue in the mail.
It makes me want to change some designs, I may now enlarge the keel lockdown system with something more robust.
Its probably better for me to not do any big crossings. I really did/do want to sail it to the Bahamas.

Not sure how much experience you have, but I think that would be doable and safe for someone that lived in Florida and that is flexible on when they leave and come back.

I'd also want a very dependable 4-6 HP outboard on the boat, but with the right conditions sailing the entire trip over and back would be realistic.

Keep us posted. I don't feel Ruth and I are quite ready, but hope to maybe make that trip in another year. It wouldn't be a lot different than when we went across Florida bay and we would be in a lot bigger boat. You have the Gulf Stream, but you factor that in and make sure the wind conditions are the right direction and intensity,

May through mid july, you could waterski across on some days. flat calm until a thunderstorm brews.

But I'd certainly rent a EPRIB if I was crossing.

honestly, bimini is expensive, and a long trip. the keys and west coast have more to offer... IMHO.

Sumner, you need to be able to read the water. You just can't trust charts in the islands... if you head offshore in the keys, you'll see the coral heads, and get that practice. You can trust the noaa charts, explorer charts are pretty good, but I never really trust them..

I found the miracle paint for boats! The home depot has it, it's new and costs 20 a quart. Did the whole top and cockpit with 1 can. It is like a cross between syrup and yogurt as far as taste. Ok, consistency. No brush marks, dries hard and goes on with a brush. This is the 3rd boat I have painted and can say this is the best finish I have ever got. It is an oil base.
That is one coat. Amazing stuff for sure. They have a bunch of colors as well.

The real test of a paint is dragging a shoe on it on a hot day.

Thank you for posting about this paint. Paint doesn't need to be made for use in water? I'm only asking because I know nothing about it. Your paint looks great.

Can you please tell us what minimum temperature the paint requires to be used?

If others confirm this can be used for marine applications, I really like the dark blue color.

Dear Mr. Cheese
You bet and thanks!
1. Paint does not need to say marine for use above the waterline. (West Marine would argue that though)
2. Not sure of the min temp but I would bet its around 50f.
I will post later on how it is holding up. I also asked the owner of a boat builder to test that paint as well. My guess is that it will work well. Trim paint for exterior is made to last a long time. You wouldnt expect the paint on your house trim and doors to only last a couple years. It dries to a very shiny and hard surface. There were no runs and very few shallow spots to recoat.
