Furler To Turnbuckle Interface

Great job on the furler. I started putting one together last year but it was a project that got temporarily sidelines. One of the issues I was facing was how to deal with setting the furler either or or over the turnbuckle for the forestay. I can't tell exactly how you dealt with this issue in your pictures. Would you mind shedding some light on this?

Thanks!
Geoff

Roller furling done and working well. I ended up tapping the holes on the connectors to attach the eyelets. The sail is hanked on to the eyes. I may reinforce the eyes with hose clamps but it seems strong enough. The furling line is led back to the cockpit.

Hey Bill, thanks, we are close for sure. You going to be at the lake Sunday? Maybe then??

As far as the sail goes, a longer boom wont change it. I have also played the hardware game to no real success. I did change the gooseneck to a sliding one to lower the rig if needed. I think they just cut it funny? Must have been made the Friday before a long weekend at 4:00 pm. I doubt it will make a huge difference anyway and I missed the entry for the Volvo Ocean Race this year.

I used plans from r. oril. They are nice plans for the most part but some of the parts are not available here. He is using pvc caps to make the plates for the drum and to make the bottom of the rig. The caps he specs have flat ends. The home depot does not stock any caps with flat ends. They are all kind of a dome shape that will not work as described. I ended up making my reel with pvc toilet flanges back to back with a reducer inside to act as a bushing. pics coming now that its light.
Correction!
My bad, I actually used plans from CAGUY. I couldnt remember and just checked my old email.

That looks like a rather deep draft, and a bit aft. ? The real test will be how the helm feels. If you have too much weather helm, you can try lifting the keel a bit.

It looks like it is time to go SAILING :)

Ha, I saw there's some fancy party's for the volvo competitors coming up.

I thought the main was loose footed? if not, I'd try to take it out of the boom...

still not sure how much difference it will really make...
check your pm for sunday..

mystery solved, the sail is a loose footed 470 sail from Shore Sails. The receipt was actually just a quote from a local place. The 1691 is related to the hull #. Hopefully this is a good sail. Never used or set up a loose footed sail.

Nice! I have used a loose footed sail on a Rhodes 22 that I chartered a few years back. I really like the way they set. And they are easier to reef. From your pictures it does not look like you have any reef points. Is that correct? I have no idea how expensive it would be to have a sail maker add some but I'd think it would not be too much. (?)

You are correct, no reef points. The boom can roll though. I would like to have points though.

I have the roller boom on my Mac. I'm not sure if that would work on a loose footed sail. (?)

I guess you need to go sailing  and find out.:D

So I am pretty sure my boat may be a good performer. The mainsail I have has 98 sq. ft where as the original was 83 sq. ft.

FINALLY!!!! It sails! We took it out on a short test sail today on one of the lakes. 15 mph avg wind, we were able to get to 7 mph on a gps. Not too bad. The boat seemed very stable and predictable. Able to heave to nicely as well. The roller furling was fantastic. Just need a few minor improvements all around. The P/O had so many eye bolts in the mast, the ones down low were catching the jib sheets when we would come about. I was shocked at how bouyant the rudder blade was. That sucker really wants to float. The hold down system worked well. I liked having all the sail controls run to the companionway area. I will be adding some sheet bags for the tails. Rigging took about an hour, take down was less.
I need to improve my system of putting up the pvc furler. It works but not as well as I would like. I would like your input on that.
Oh yeah, the puppy was happy sleeping in the cabin. Cant wait to go somewhere now!

That is great. She looks good on the water, congrats. I still think that one of those might be a good boat for us here at home. I need to talk to you about it sometime.

I rotated some of your pics as I was about to fall off my computer stool and the poor puppy looked like she/he might fall out of the boat ;),

The dog looks happier ;). I'll let you sail a little bit so that you know the boat better and then talk to you about what you think about one on the size lakes we have nearby,

Hey Bill, the main was ok but it is not loose footed. It didn't fit perfectly but worked well. I need to add a boom vang to shape it better.
