yeaaaa!!!

Life is indeed sweet. congrats.

Its March in Wisconsin and we're thinking of putting the boat in the water!
We have sailing fever and you are not helping!

We're doing the opposite tho - sail first restore later. Your little 17 is way prettier than our 224. Probably leaks less from above also...

Have fun and I have your ideas in my sketchbook.

So I learned why the mast post must be directly under the mast.(Roof cracked at aft end of mast base). We started to look at the cracked area and found more wood rot in the original wood. I had to cut out about an 18" square of soft wood to get to solid. We laid it up with good heavy biaxial cloth and epoxy. Also added a full length of the coach roof oak rib running fore and aft on the inside for support. The base is now directly over the post. Should be good to go. Test sail this week before paint.

I like it....someone who isn't afraid of cutting a huge hole in their boat:dance:. A lot of times the approach that appears more drastic is the better choice and you did that.

Too bad you couldn't of spanned the gap with a support that would of held the base of the mast in place and made that all into a moon roof ;),

Success! The new roof mods worked perfectly. We sailed her out to the 3 mile boundary line in 3ft waves. This little boat sails really well! Points to about 30 degrees. We had the rail down in the water several times with no problems. Now its time to prime and paint. More sailing Friday.

Ha, that's not much of a rail for you butt! ;)

I think you can find some 'plastic buttons' for the ends of those bolts... at mcdonald's hdw or sailorman.. -watch your head!

Well after the last two sails, we had issues with the pvc furler each time. It has jammed twice when it was the worst possible time. I have removed it and gone back to a hanked on jib with a downhaul.

Today we replaced all the standing rigging and added turnbuckles at each attachment point. Also added a Windex.

Well I just finished fixing the coachroof and improving the compression post install. Now the mast base is back in the original position with the new post directly under it. Also used that piece of oak to stiffen the ceiling and provide a base to mount the lights. Got it all sealed up before those storms rolled in Friday. We got about 8" of rain and not one drop inside the boat!
I added some shots of the battery storage area, soon will have it mounted in a nice box with the distribution block in there as well. On the opposite side is just open storage.
The other pics show how the seats convert to either the bed or can be removed to gain floor space.
Once I am closer to done inside, I will give it one more coat of nice fresh paint.
Also will be adding a thick coat of nonskid on the deck.
Lastly, I came up with a good design for a pvc whisker pole. It is doubled pvc so relatively stiff. I will post later on all the pieces and how it works. Its still untested but I think it should work just fine to pole out the jib for good downwinding.

I might add a post under the floor to transfer the mast force to the hull If that verticle panel a couploe of inches aft of the post does not go all the way down.

Nice job. It is funny how your mind can get set in how you approach things. When I saw the "cross" beam running fore and aft I thought.... "well that is wrong" but in fact it makes no real difference so long as you spread out the weight and I had to acknowledge that I was limited by a preconception. All of the boats I've ever had used a bulkhead with a crossbeam under the mast so in my mind the beam "belongs" athwart. I guess I need to spend some time considering what other preconceptions I have :)

BTW:
Why do you have your boat so high up on the trailer? My preconceptions tell me that it would be better to have it sit as low as possible on the trailer.;)

Hey guys, that crossbeam is just a cover. The post is actually sitting above the centerboard trunk. It just looks hollow. That would not hold the load of the rig without some strong support underneath.

The boat is high because that trailer is not a Mac trailer. The rear cross beam is straight, not with a V in it. The cb sits about 18" below boat.

how close is the CB to the axle or cross beams?

and does the pole float? :D

FWIW,
I was on a dufor last weekend and a bene this weekend...
They both were leaking... and the Mac is dry, LOL.

ps: 420 racing wed, at the lake.

Cb sits below crossbeams by a few inches, clears when it floats.
Put those Clearance beckson 310's in about a month ago. I painted the trim rings white with that plastic spray paint.
I will be flying this Wed if it's a race day? We need to hang out sometime soon. Going to the airshow on Saturday! ( On power boat).
Here are your pics

Also just tested the whisker pole. Does not float, yet. I think some great stuff will seal it up and give it extra boy-ant-sea. Good idea to check Bill! Probably saved me pole. Its always the little things!
