You have a skag hung rudder don't you? My understanding is they prefer to play with a spade. Good luck.
Partial skeg. Made it to our Anchorage. A remote beach called Priai do Tonel. Just anchored. I'm listening to the surf hit the beach. There were dozens of surfers here when we anchored. It's dark now so most are gone.

Saw dolphins at the beginning of the trip then a number of tuna jumping out of the water, but thankfully, no Orcas....

Quite the surfers haven here. Before dawn there were surfers out on the waves coming in here. We are anchored just before the waves start getting created so it was actually quite a lovely anchorage. Let me see if I can get any photos...

Well, hard to see anything, but there are numerous surfers in this picture. It's only one small section of the beach. But the sun to right behind the more populated section so I couldn't get a photo.

Yes you are correct. Windy says 7knots as 130º.
And look at the accelerated winds coming through the Gibraltar. Great for Spanish Square riggers heading towards the new world…

Looks like they're almost where they are headed today:

We arrived in Portimea just a bit ago. We are out having dinner - wifi from restaurant...

Very much wind on the nose. It was running most of the day at about 18 knots. The last couple hours it died down and we switched to motor sailing.... Docked at the fuel dock as I've an appointment tomorrow with Pete Keeping - rigging expert.

p.s. The tacks were done just at the edge of the canyon in this region. I'm told the Orcas like the canyons so I was hesitant to continue across which would have been required to do the leg in only one tack.

A beautiful but rugged coast line.

Weather patterns made us change our course to the Canaries. It was looking like a better route for sailing.

We left 1am early Monday morning from Portimao. We had been debating which route would be less motoring and more sailing. The weather models indicated better towards the Canaries.

I see The change… Note there will be an area of High Pressure that runs SW to NE over Madeira. Stay south of that. Not so close to the African Coast to get trapped in the winds running north along the coast. There appears to be a sweet spot about 100-200nm off the coastline where your breezes will be out of the NNE giving you a reach to the Canaries.

Good luck.

That's right about where we are. The breeze seems to come and go. We had it earlier, were sailing at 7 to 8 knots. Lovely! But currently the wind has died down and we are back to motoring.
