Windy suggests the winds will continue light, fickle and calm seas for the next 24 hours. Perhaps a thunderstorm and dash of rainfall during that period.

We've been blessed with missing the thunderstorms, thankfully. Watched a couple run around us. Had some rain for sure.

We are enjoying the calm seas. The two crew went swimming again today. Even though the boat was sailing at less than 1 knot, they discovered it would be pretty impossible to swim fast enough to catch the boat if they got behind it.... They had lines keeping them safe.

Must admit, I was surprised what 0.9 knots is compared to a swimmer....

I was reading John Harries Tips column this am. He reminded me of the sailor heading into port after being at sea and the danger that lurks.

I try to never forget:
  • It’s not the sea that kills sailors, it’s the hard bits around the edges.
  • The very human, and understandable urge to get home can lead us to bad choices.
  • Always consider ‘staying out there’ as one of our options.
My Oregon Lifelong Commercial Fisherman Uncle forgot rule #3 and decided to cross the Columbia Bar. He made it , but in doing it a wave hit the boat from behind. Swept the cockpit with its 200 gallon diesel tank underneath clean off the stern of the fishing boat. Set it floating beside the boat still attached by hoses and fouled lines with the captain holding onto the wheel. Crew came up on deck and had to rescue the Captain, then called the CG to help arrange a tow.

Wishing the Captain and crew of the Musetta, Safe return to your Port of Call.

I went to Brazil for 2 week, when I knew Spanish also.

We communicated well also.:ass:

Example: 20 = veinte [bain tay] or = vinte [ been chi ]

Aka Jaime
I had 12 engineers in Sorocaba, Brazil, reporting to me for a couple of years, and I visited them personally, once, for a week. I spent a week in Lisbon. I now live in New Bedford, which is, demographically, 45% Portuguese. Many here, mostly older folks, speak no or little English. I know one can communicate, and most know a little Spanish, but there are huge differences in vocabulary form European to Brazilian Portuguese, as I'm sure you know. I know enough Spanish and Portuguese to survive, or at least get a meal and a drink and a train ticket. :)

I really enjoyed this video:
Brazilian Portuguese vs. European Portuguese | Speaking Brazilian

I'm trying to learn some European Portuguese because of where I live, and plenty of opportunity to be immersed in it.

Point 3 is very important, but unfortunately many who are weekend sailors and don't have the flexibility to take an extra day off get a case of "get-home-itis" and take risks. When I worked I would just call in sick rather than take risks. I had to wait two days once to return to my home port due to the remnants of a tropical storm making the harbor entrance dangerous. But I was better off waiting.

Good Morning,
Just an FYI in case you have not heard reports. For at least the past several months, even earlier, there appears to be one or more orca pods loitering near the coast of Portugal, individuals of which have “attacked” sailboats boats passing near them. Word is, they like to disable the boats by attacking the rudder. Some friends of ours who passed along the coast of Portugal in March heading south described the scene. A lot of trepidation and uneasiness felt among the cruisers there. :sosad:

I'm well aware, thank you. It's quite a problem with no good solution. I'm hoping for the best. It's about all I can do. It's most frequent down near Gibraltar, but it's been happening all over the Coast up to Spain. I believe there are a few reports in the Bay if Biscay almost to France.

Wish me luck!

@Hayden Watson reported just the other day, seeing an Orca cruising in the San Juan Islands here in the PacificNW. Lets hope the Portuguese Orca can‘t talk to the PacificNW Orca.

There are some indications that the "word" is spreading among the Orca world... But I don't know how well documented that may be....

I'm sure you will enjoy Lisbon. My wife and I were there nearly 40 years ago. She got along with her French, better than I did with the tiny bit of Spanish that I knew.

We had sailed into Vilamoura, down South, and Linda and I rented a car and drove up to Lisbon.

Glad you made it safely and had a sail that was just exciting enough.

For some reason, SBO hasn't been giving me notices for new posts on this thread, so I had a lot of reading to catch up on.

But, welcome ashore:beer:

Congratulations Musetta and Crew. A great crossing Captain. Whether it is the 1700’s or 2023, a safe arrival in Port across an Ocean is an event to Celebrate.

Well done!
