In general no, unfortunately. Hand steering for the night... I do have an adjustable break on my wheel so I set it such that I can still turn the wheel, but it's stiff. I can usually get an adjustment where the boat goes close enough to the rumb line needing adjustment every couple minutes. Makes for some relief...Enough for the windvane to steer?
All correct. We've been looking at heading more to that wind but I'm not sure how long it's going to last. Might just be easier to stick to the route. Not likely in a straight line.
At his present location, he is about 20nm from a consistent 6 knots. That could be enough wind to give him windvane steerage.
Unfortunately, he is under the influence of a Low Cell off the North West corner Spain. The Cell is dissipating. So too are the winds. It means calm if not nearly flat seas. Sunny skies. Clear nights but diminishing winds.
I"m currently about 175 nm from the entrance to Lisbon. At my current speed of about 5 knots, that's 35 hours - or a bit after midnight Sunday night going into Monday. I could head a bit further north to take more time and get in later, or slow down a bit and get in later. In either case, I should be arriving prior to the wind shift on the Monday mid to late day. Of course, how close to right will Windy be.... I would prefer to arrive in the early morning Monday morning so that I have all the day going in and full daylight. Should be pretty spectacular watching Lisbon have the sun rise over the city while coming in...On Windy all the models seem to agree that it will be light for the next couple of days but picking up out of the North Monday mid to late in the day. If it was me, I would make some Northing now so I wasn't bucking into it closing the coast.
I"m actually looking to go to Seixal. It's across the river from Lisbon. I was told it's a great spot for the boat, inexpensive and there is a ferry very close by that goes into Lisbon. That's the current plan anyway.Where will you berth in Lisbon? (I've been there, it's a great city!)
I was there in the '80's so a bit before that. It is a great city to explore! I'll do my best to fully enjoy!I was in Lisbon about 30 years ago, it is a great city to explore. Enjoy!
Use a couple of tied lines to the Wheel to hold course.Hand steering
I have a break on my wheel. Holding one position doesn't work. Waves, currents, more make a set rudder position not a set rhumb line position. I could only wish. Then I could simply lock my wheel and it would never wander...Use a couple of tied lines to the Wheel to hold course.
Your Spanish should be handy there. [Rhumb line , the "H" is silent in Spanish]
Portugal is famous for its Wine Corks.
Seixal was famous for Wooden Ship Building.
Jim...
PS: I speak Spanish too. I was told if you hold your tongue while speaking Spanish = Portuguese.
Ha, ha, they speak Portuguese there!Your Spanish should be handy there.
There's a great restaurant/bar there, I will try to recall where exactly. But a real "destination" place for visitors.I"m actually looking to go to Seixal. It's across the river from Lisbon. I was told it's a great spot for the boat, inexpensive and there is a ferry very close by that goes into Lisbon. That's the current plan anyway.
But if anyone has suggestions - I'm all ears. I've only been to Lisbon by car, never by boat.

typically do pretty well with my Spanish talking with Portuguese. Not perfect but usually we can understand each other.
I went to Brazil for 2 week, when I knew Spanish also.Ha, ha, they speak Portuguese there!
Neither do I, I'll have to go check if the device got turned off. Here's their 1355 EDT position from yesterday. Not sure why there's no update since then.
