We went to turn on the autopilot as we are motoring and it decided to no longer run
When you can ...
1) Check the battery VDC at the AP motor or its connection.
2) Look if something metal is near the Flux Compass
3) Your Radar should allow AP mode too. The AP may be turned off by the Radar.

Thank you.

Seems to be getting power. Flux gate is fine. Radar is not connected.

I think there was a mechanical failure in the drive unit. But to explore further is going to be a major disassembly job in the stern. The unit is very hard to get to.

Perhaps hard to get to is why maintenance and service steps get missed. Great to have others to share the load.

You have been making good time under power. Gabriel’s system have not been transmitting. Could he have changed the link? What about the check in routine. We are left to monitor your progress by AIS stations, which are inconsistent.

Fair winds may they blow in your direction carrying you safely to port.

I had looked it over before going and all looked good. It's currently behaving like there is an internal mechanical failure in the drive unit. I think I'll have to disassemble the unit. That's a big job.

I just asked Gabriel, he hasn't turned on his in reach. He's getting a hair cut right now. He'll turn it back on soon.

I'll be giving the 15 and 19 hundred updates. I also have to turn on the GO. .

Garmin display has me at 37 36.906 N 26 14.408 W as I'm reading this.

Within eyesight of the last islands in the Azores.

p.s. Doing a more southerly route from the great circle upon the advice of my super wether routing team such that the storm that is heading this way will be far enough north for us to have nice sailing winds, but not really tough sailing winds. Let's hope for the best!

Based on your LonLat post from Garmin you still have VIla do Porto 65nm about 20 points off your Starboard Bow.

Weather looks sunny, calm seas, a hint of a breeze... Perhaps Gabriel will choose to dive into the open ocean after the hair cut. Nothing like swimming in Deep deep ocean waters... Refreshing and a bit scary as no one knows what lurks in those dark deep waters.

Better yet.. perhaps not...

That sounds about right. Can't see Vlla do Porto yet. We'll go between the two islands heading to the southern route you suggested to me before. It's looking like we should have the time to get down there. We are also monitoring from here on Windy.

Gabriel jumped in after the hair cut with Greta following. They both swam around the boat, checked out climbing up the structure of my aft platform, they were able to get up that way also. Then came up the newly created "swim rope ladder" and that also worked. All aboard and safe!! I did not go in...

Likely a wise decision.

I have a hydrovane. It's fantastic!
I have heard good things about the Hydrovane and the Cape Horn. The only one I have personal experience with is the Monitor and it was very finicky and had a bad habit of either loosing course or having the rudder kick up. Someone always needed to be in position to take over, so it was not very restful.
