Thanks Ken!
We started to paint the undersides of the hatches today to get a feel for the coverage. I really like this Brightsides paint! We didn't fuss too much about surface prep for these pieces' undersides, and we were interrupted by a real gully washer rain, but every little bit of progress is welcome!

I also used brightsides on my dinghy, used the roll and tip method, looks like it was sprayed. In fact that's the first thing people ask when they touch it. ;). Pretty sure your going to like the end results.

I really like the way the paint performs when we applied it to the hatch undersides. Now we are trying to get the primer sanded to at least a 220 level of smooth. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I sure get a lot of buildup of paint on the sandpaper. Can't seem to sand for longer than 1 minute before the paper fills up. We've tried starting with all different grits and get the same result. Is this normal? The primer (Interprotect 200E) went on rougher than I'd have liked, and so it really needs sanding to get it smooth enough to apply the final coat. Should I be wet sanding?

I used one of there recommended primer on the dinghy, it too was like that. Took forever to sand, I thought maybe weather had something yo do with it, everyone I talked to had a totally difference experience. Can really say how many sheet of paper I used before I got it sanded, was like sanding gum rubber.

It does help to know that what I've run into with this isn't unheard of!

I am curious if anyone has tried wet sanding and what their experience has been and what their technique was?

We just used Interlux Pre-Kote primer on the deck and hull above the water line. This past weekend painted the deck and hull using the roll and tip method unbelivable results, very happy with the paint. We had to paint in the driveway with no other options, were reallly lucky with the results. Two coats on the deck and two on the hull. As for sanding the primer we used 3M "180 grit" non loading sandpaper worked great. We used 320 sand paper between coats on the color for the deck and hull with great results.

George that looks awesome! So with the non loading sandpaper, were you still able to use your electric sanders? Really like the look of the dark hull.

Yes we still used the palm sander on the sanding of the primer. The sanding of the color between coats was done with the 320 by hand. Just enough to take off the gloss, the gloss did reapear when we wiped it down prior to next color coat. Love Intelux paint!

Heading back out to paint the boat today...
For what it's worth, we decided to go with Brightside paint for the finish coat. They no longer make Interthane Plus paint, so I didn't want to get partway through the project and not be able to match paint if we needed more.
The prime looks great! I was not considering priming in the cabin area but seeing what it looks like from your pictures I might add that too. I am going to paint the bilge as is it a bit rough with bilge paint as it waterproofs and is easier to clean etc. Your prime coat appears to be grey in the pictures? I have used the white and happy with the results.

Thanks George, that is very encouraging! Running into the problem of potentially having to do that much sanding by hand to get the Interprotect 2000E primer smooth was a rather discouraging prospect. But this is good news. Now to sneak away and go work on it!

Yes Starrynights, it comes in both white and grey. Helps when sanding to know how much you're removing. I'll admit, the sanding would be less of a chore had I not succumbed to the temptation of touching up paint that had already started to skin over (FWIW, it is hard to tell, you just have to keep track of where you've been.)

For what it's worth, if anyone is using Interlux Interprotect 2000e paint for their primer and need to sand it, wet sanding seems to be the only way the sandpaper will not clog up with this stuff. It's good paint, but it was designed to be a bottom protective layer under the antifouling, without sanding required.

I long ago decided to wet sand the hull of my boat whenever I got around to doing the bottom job so I bought an El Cheapo harbor freight pneumatic sander for the job. So far, it's been working like charm when used with a water hose and it's a whole lot cleaner, cooler and quieter than using the random orbital sander with a shop vacuum hosed attached to it.

Wow, I know it's been a while since the last update, but I've finally gotten the sanding done! Now she just needs to be cleaned of all the paint dust "mud" so we can start painting. It's been so tempting to rush through, but we've been able to stay the course so far. Definitely taking longer than we wanted to get her in the water!

By the way, do any of you have any experience with painting the bilges on your C22? Does it help keep it cleaner (read mold/mildew free)? The raw fiberglass just seems to retain the stains from that stuff, and I was wondering if something like bilgekote would help.

Some pics from progress made painting last weekend. With my schedule, it just takes us longer than I'd like, but the results are starting to show, and I figure that since it has taken this long, don't cut corners now.
