There are basically three types of fins that keep the boat from slipping sideways through the water, ie a keel, a centerboard, and a daggerboard. A keel is weighted and usually rigidly mounted except for trailerable sailboats which is kind of a hybrid in that it's weighted but also swings up. A centerboard is unweighted and swings or pivots up and down. A daggerboard is also unweighted and slides straight up and down. The Mac 26 boats all have either a centerboard or a daggerboard.What exactly is a daggerboard? My keel drops down when I release the cleated line inside the cabin.
In the picture the first boat has a full keel, the second has a fin keel, the third has a centerboard, and the last has a daggerboard.
