Ushuaia (Cat. 28 # 349)

Naming your new born baby or your boat - it seems to be a difficult job. Eventually I choose "Ushuaia", sounding a bit mysterious, hard chance you meet another one, and above all the name of the most southern city on earth (capital of Tierra del Fuego, Argentina), and one of my most interesting journeys as a photographer, though, unfortunately, not with the ship we named it after..

Naming our boat

Our boat remained nameless for a number of years. 2 years ago we were racing the Memorial Day Regatta at Grande Lake Saint Marys Boat Club in Ohio. On our way out to start racing we hit a stump and we had to abandon racing for the day to repair the boat. We were able to race the next two days. Grand Lake St Mary's is famous for their Door Prizes, so even though we didn't win a trophy our name was picked to win the grand prize of a dock box. As my husband walked up to accept the gift. The crowd started to chant STUMP STUMP STUMP... getting louder and louder. Guess you had to be there Anyway our boat is now called STUMPED

Name game

I bought the boat 5 yrs ago and used the name for 4 ysrs. First name was 'AWDIWO' (Anything Worth Doing Is Worth Overdoing) I change the name this year to 'ZoieRae' after my new grand daughter.

Scotch's Too

I changed the name of my boat when I purchased my current one (Cape Dory 27). Our first dog was a cocker / dauchand mix named Butterscotch (Scotch for short). She was always the first one in our canoe or powerboat, loved riding up front with her ears blowing in the breeze when on the power boat. Therefore, I decided to name my future boats Scotch's Too. My Cape Dory is the third incarnation of Scotch's Too.

Significant Other

During my single years, I named my boat "Significant Other." That saved lots of name change trouble and caused some other discussions about what (who) was more important. I'm married now and the new boat is named Odyssey our travels togather into the future. We didn't bother with the renaming ceremony.

C Bass

First off all, our last name is Bass. Second, once as I was placing an order over the phone, the customer service person asked me for my full name. I responded "Valerie C. Bass", which he understood as "Valerie SeaBass". When I told him I was a fresh water Bass not one from the sea, we both had a good laugh. Finaly, since the boat is a part of the family and will be going in salt water, it only made sense to call it the "C Bass"!

Naming both Design name and Boat Name

As a designer / builder / owner / skipper I am in the unique situation of being able to name both the design and the boat ! My design name is " HOPIE 20 " , so named because the boat is half HObie and half sharPIE and is 20 foot long . As the boat is made entirely out of used boat parts ( comming from HOBIE 17's and an Australian Lightweight Sharpie ), and thus junk , I have called the boat " Junkyard Biltz " . My partners and I wanted a name that was both evocative of a famous craft and descriptive of our rather (at times) reckless racing style. We settled on "Apocalypso". In other words, in pursuit of nautical knowlege while occasionally meeting absolute disaster!

Great Ladies

We bought our beautiful, brand new 40' Caliber LRC the same year we lost both our moms. So we named the boat after both of them: "Annie Hope". Hope she'll be as good to us as both our moms were. P.S. Don't know why the forum thinks I have an O'Day. Went it to correct, but it's still showing up. Oh well!

In the Zones

We did not name our 1st boat a sweet 16. The second boat - a Cat 250 water balast was named Danger Zone due to several "interesting" experiences both on the water and the road. We decided to keep in the Zone with our Cat 28 and named her Comfort Zone as it has much more head room than our 250.

TIKI

I named our boat based on a tropical paradise or a myth i.e., a male figure in Polynesian myth - sometimes identified as the first man. Most of all it reminds us of the Tiki Hut bar on the beach...first sailing & then a cold drink to rap up a day on the water...I guess I will go now & watch the sun go done. Hunter 146 TIKI

Damn Yankee

Being in the Armed Forces, I am frequently down south. Invariably some Southerner always askes me, "Ya' ain't from around here, are you boy?". To which I usually reply "What was your first clue?". Thus the name "Damn Yankee" was born! John Walsh O'Day 22 "Damn Yankee"

boat name

When I purchased my C30, it's name was Second Half. Since I have 0 interest in sports, I had to change the name to something that fit me. I renamed her Selkie after the mythical seals that come ashore, slip off their skins, and become beautiful women. If a man found the hidden skin, the "woman" was obliged to become his wife. This creature was called a selkie. I made no special ceremony-have no superstitions. Selkie is probably happy with her new name.

Memories from the past

I used to watch a TV show back in the 60's called Adventures in Paradise, It was about a Skipper called Adam Troy that sailed the south pacific on various adventures, He was always helping or rescuing a nubile young lady in distress. The name of his boat was the TIKI, so thats what I named my boat, hopeing mayby the same type of adventures would befall me HA HA.

TASHTEGO

TASHTEGO is named for one of the Harpooneers on the whaleship PEQUOD in Moby Dick. TASHTEGO was a Wampanoag indian from Martha's Vinyard. I though of using the town he was from as the hailing port when I documented her but the name of the town (where the Wampanoags still live) is GAY HEAD, MA and there are new meanings associated with the name.

R-TERN

My first mate and I agonized for days, months actually, over a name. The boat was used and had an awful name that meant absoultly nothing to us. So I stripped off the old name and left the boat nameless for months while we mulled over names. I always liked boats named after birds, like Hawk, Osprey, Tern, etc.. But every harbor has a dozen of them. One day while in Maine sailing our other boat ( a small day sailer ) we sailed by a boat named Tern, and I mentioned to first mate, see another Tern, and she said how about R-TERN, and it stuck. Not only is it Our boat named TERN, it's truly Our TURN to enjoy life. Lot's of ceremony, but not the usual that's listed, we made up our own :)

Sail the competition's design?

Wife kept her own family name, Pierson. When she bought an Irwin 28, I just thought it a natural to name it "Pierson's Irwin" and used the Pearson "P" with the trident and the Irwin logo to make the graphics fot the name

boat names

I usually sail the boat abit before I name her. That's been my experience at least. I had a Victoria 18 once that I named Zypher but the more I sailed her, the more I called her the Vic or Vicki. IT was her behavior on the water that prompted me to call her that in that my little sisters name is Vicki and there seemed to be similarities between the two. Only I would know that. My 27 US Yacht was named the initials of her former owners, "BJ" and since I didn't like sailing around with that on my stern, I wanted to call her "Nimbus". Kids didn't like it. On agreement the kids and I named her "Amigo" and she became a very good friend. I've been corrected on her spelling because of the male form of the word, yet, she's a she just as I'm a she named Lee, named after my grandfather. Now, my new aquisition is my little O'Day Day Sailer. What a little beauty she is. I'm so thrilled with her and after sailing her in the La Trappe Creek and out into the Choptank, I've decided to name her "Skate" because that is what she does. She skates along beautifully and sound. She's a bit headstrong at times but easily trims out. Now, the 41' Dickerson I'm currently working on is named Mintaka. I'd like to rename her "Winddancer" because I "feel" that is what she will do. I haven't sailed her yet, she's dry docked in the old Dickerson yard and for anyone interested in the pics of my little fleet, she alont with little Skate can be seen at winddancer.tv.
