Shesails

My daughter and I are the only ones who sail this boat, hence the name Shesails

ENTROPY

As a mechanical engineer , I chose ENTROPY a term from thermodynamics , only my friends who went to engineering school get it . I like it since it is short & fits on the boat & since one buys name plates by $ per letter , this one is a bargain.

Double Meaning

Our boat name has more than one significance for us. Her name is C-Pearl. Meaning #1: We bought it on our 30th anniversary, which is the pearl anniversary according to some sources, and we sail it in the Columbia River. Meaning #2: I am a software engineer, and C and perl are two of the languages I've programmed in. Her previous name was Weatherly, which was a favorite destination in Puget Sound for her previous owner, but not applicable to us sailing on the Columbia.

Kept the Name

I bought a fire damaged boat, and being a novice sailor, decided I needed all the luck I could get. One of the boats I looked at before buying this one was owned by a Doctor. He named it “ Doc’s Holiday “. While waiting in the security line at MIA, a man ahead of me had a picture of his H430 on the back of his shirt and the name was vary elegant (wish I had thought of it) “ Dances with Wind “.

Wassail

I kept the original name, "Wassail" which is a medieval drinking toast. Since I belong to the SCA, a medieval re-creation society, the name was apt. BTW, the second owner also in the SCA, also kept the original name. The first owner, as near as I can tell, was not a member of the SCA.

"Confetti" (Cat25 #1)

We are the original owners for our Catalina 25 (Hull#1). Originally she was nicknamed "Cold Duck" (long story). However, after building a spinnaker from scraps of cloth, and also winning almost all the races we entered using that chute, a buddy that was getting consistantly kicked bemoaned at the bar post race one day he was quite tired of being beaten by a boat that flew a bunch of confetti for a spinnaker. The name stuck and we painted the name on the hull! That was about 26 years ago! (we are still winning races, but the confetti chute is a bit long of tooth and is reserved for those light airs days only!!!)

Boat Naming

Our previous boat was bought used and we kept the name "Too Young" and dingy was "Too Little" But then we bought a new boat and wasted a lot of time trying to pick a name. Wrote many down and Orion was one possibility since it was a Hunter and another was Stepping Stone. It had to be a name easy to understand on the VHF radio. We seemed to take forever to decide and finally settled on Wind Drift which says something about our sailing style but I still thiink we could have done better. What should I name the dingy? See attached photo.

A father's joke

I designed and built my first boat while in high school. I constructed it of wood in my parent's basement. After completion and having moved it to the garage, my father stopped by and asked what I was going to name it. This was obviously a loaded question since he had a smile as wide as the garage door. His suggestion was that I name it after the substantial pile of wood chips remaining on the basement floor. So... the names of all my boats ever since have had "chips" incorporated. Mr Chips, I through III and Swift Chips.

RECESS

This is our third year for RECESS. We kept the name, even though everyone asks if we are teachers. (we are not) But we liked the graphics and the name seem appropriate. Lastly, I did want to risk upsetting King Neptune.

Aeolus

We just bought a 1990 Nimble Arctic from the second owner in North Carolina. The boat was named the "Wally B". I was looking for a good name that would be suitable and the dictionary opened to "aeolian" (wind harp) which came from "Aeolus" (wind-god) from Greek. Seemed perfect. As for a ceremony, I walked around the boat on the trailer in the parking lot of Walgreens, reciting its name while my husband was inside searching for a trailer part. How appropriate!

Reality

My job includes a lot of meetings, and it is my private joke to say at the end of a long meeting, "ok, now that everyone has had their say, it is time to get back to Reality".

Mistress II

Our first boat was named after my lovely wife Jeanine Kay. After selling the boat it still has this name, but when it came to our second boat she declined to allow her name on the boat because she claimed the boat got more attention than her so she came up with our present name. We were lucky on the first two boats (both used) because they were not named. Our last boat; however, required a renaming ceremony. I don't agree with my wife that Mistress II gets more attention than her but for us the name is appropriate.

Renamed and re-gendered

I not only renamed my used Day Sailer, I gave it a sex change. She went from Alyssa to Argo, Argo being my male Schipperke. Why didn't I rename it Monkey after my female Schip? Too close to the old Gary Hart scandal.

And the name of my Boat is...

My wife and I are loyal fans of Jimmy Buffet and are in tune with his easy going, laid back manner. The lyrics of his song "Come Monday" seemed to tie nicely to our lifestyle at the lake and when I needed a name for my new H240 it fit well there also.

La Vida Feliz

We recently acquired our Hunter 37. We will be sailing her to the Rio Dulce of Guatemala this fall. We love Guatemala and the people and living there on the boat is a dream come true. The name says it all "La Vida Feliz". On the stern is also a big happy face. Keeping with the spanish theme our dink is "La Nina". We have not had a renaming ceremony yet but she has been smudged.

Naming our boats

We like boat names that have double entendres. Being a physician I tended toward medical names but did not like the common ones like "therapy" Our first boat, a Catalina 28 we named "Doctors Orders" and our newest, a Catalina 350, is named "Doc Holiday."

Hot Tub

The Name Game - How we named our boat

We sold our 1985 Buccaneer because I hurt my back and the mast was just too heavy. My wife asked me what we ought to buy in place of the Bucc. I told her to put a sail on a Hot Tub and that'll make me feel better. (due to my back) So, we bought the Catalina Capri 16.5 which has a lighter mast and easier to sail. Thus, the name "Hot Tub"

My Kinja

The previous owner named our boat, Fancy Free, and although I liked the name, I had to rename my Catalina 22. My Kinja was named after the island in Herman Wouk's book, "Don't stop the carnival". It is one of my favorite books, and Norman Paperman's relationship with the island and it's people is not unlike the relationship between owner and boat....some days it is heaven, others hell, but we all keep coming back for more because it feeds a need deep inside of us. The only down side of the name, is that I have to explain what it means to most people.
