tooth'n'nail

My wife is a dental hygenist and I am a carpenter-contractor who now teaches construction carpentry at a Career Center ( the new politically correct term for what was formerly a vocational school). 23 down and 2 to go til retirement;>) She came up with the name at our first USPS safe boating class before we had found the boat.

Dub Collins

Dubious One

Our first boat was named Dubious One. My nickname is Dub and we were somewhat Dubious about the whole thing. Our boat that we use now (we actually still own both) is named Avalon and was named that when we bought it. We liked it. Avalon is the mythical paradise that King Arthur and the knights supposedly went to upon death.

Double Meanings

I actually renamed my first used boat. She wasn't used very much, so I figured Neptune couldn't get too excited. How little did I know. Anyway, I had three small children at the time, so I named her Asylum. A place of solitude when I'm solo sailing, a place of insanity when the kids were with me. Short and sweet.

Sailing Sunnyjoy Hunter 340

We bought the boat used and the original owner had named the boat "Truant"...story there unknown. We renamed the boat "Sunnyjoy" after our eight-year-old. She and the boat are the only Sunnyjoys I have ever heard of. For the re-naming ceremony, to appease Neptune, we convinced Sunnyjoy to pee in the bilge (just a drop or two) as I read somewhere that this would ensure that bad luck would not follow the renaming of a boat. We also poured the first sip of champagne for Neptune's consumption during the renaming party. Seemed to have done the trick!!!

smaller boat name

When we lived in Florida we had a Hunter 380 named Star of Orion. Orion, The Hunter; get it? When we moved to Oklahoma a smaller boat was more appropriate so we got a used Hunter 280. It is named StarLite. It is a lot like Star of Orion but has fewer calories. The dinghy is Twinkie Dink.

Morningstar

When my wife and I purchased our new Hunter 23.5 we struggled for weeks to come up with a perfect name for our new boat, We looked at books for names of other boats, threw ideas at each other, all in search for the perfect name. Then suddenly it dawned on use, the name of the hotel they we stayed at on our honeymoon, Morningstar Beach Resort,in the Virgin Islands. The name then became very clear, Morningstar

Name was an Omen

I applied for a mooring in a bay in front of where we were moving to. A year later I was notified that I had come to the top of the list. This was the catalyst to buy a boat. Well what do you know,I found a Catalina 28 for sale named "Catalyst" Guess who owns the boat now!!! PS Catalyst means something that causes an important event to happen

Name Resources

Hi Andy What a dilemma for the next name. It will be hard to surpass "Foray" for all those reasons you mentioned. Very clever!!. Suggest you try www.onelook.com a dictionary gives similar words and phrases including word. You can truncate. Also may help is a phonetic dictionary online and maybe www.bartleby.com. I am looking at these now for my new name for a Catalina C310. All I can suggest phonetically is perhaps using the word "aye" somehow. It is a nautical term for yes e.g. "aye aye Captain or "aye aye sir" What about "Three Ayes" well just a thought Good luck

the name of mine when i bought her was

sea worthy.. now, not that its not a nice name..but. I wanted something that people didnt laugh at while I'm redoing a few things. I thought and thought about a new name for awhile. Finally after asking around about names that are after loved ones..I came up with my sisters name.We lost her seven years or so ago to a massive heart attack at the age of forty two. Two days after her b'day. I've never liked the name she was stuck with cuz of a lousy marriage and would love to change the name on her gravestone, but she does have a son, so I guess we'll have to respect that.. I figured why not. Everyone I checked with, said it was okay to name a boat after a someone. It took awhile to come up with what I wanted. It's nothing fancy, but to me and everyone else who knew her...I dedicate my little ol boat to my Sister. Called "The Patty B". Fair winds everyone.....

Focus Group

I was working at a Rock station in Tampa Bay when I got my boat. It is a 1968 but had never had a name. I got it from te second owner who had had it just long enough to drink the vessel's displacement in cheap bourbon and paint the interior without benifit of masking. To name the boat I and a few of the writers at the station began with two name cominations and we soon had twenty seven names to choose from. I did a focus group and there were three overwhelming hits that came through. The one most voted for by men was "Crotch Dog" women voted for "Wind Kiss" and "Pagan Wind" -- I went with Pagan Wind because the woman I had just fallen in love with liked the name. Just to be sure we placated the gods, we searched every scrap of paper aboard to insure there was no name ever associated with the hull and then we had a Christening party with local holy people and virgins to douse the hull with expensive wine. I chose Nude Beach Florida as my hailing port and I married that girl.

life was passing me by 'EPIPHANY'

I was in a very poor marriage that had lasted for allmost 20 years but was fast going downhill. I had purchased my boat the year before but could not think of the perfect name for her. About the time I decided to get a divorce the wife left and saved me the trouble by gettting the divorce herself. I took a drubbing in the court proceedings and in the following months was not near as happy being alone as I thought I would be. One day I had an 'EPIPHANY' that I would only be as happy as I made myself. Living for someone else would not do it, nor would trying to make someone else happy by doing everything they wanted to do. Thus my boat came by a name.

changing the name to show my lifes passions

When we bought our used Catalina Capri 18 it had been named Sleeper. This name did nothing for us and really meant nothing to us. I tried to think of a name that showed my love of sailing and music( as I am a music teacher). Tried to be cute and witty, but came up w/ nothing I really liked. Then I hit upon the perfect name- "Sea Minor" My friend suggested Sea Major, but I said since the boat is not major in size, that Sea Minor was a better fit.

quick wit

My 7 year old daughter seems to have a knack for choosing just the right name for everything. After getting cable television for the first time, we were glued to the screen for a couple of weeks. We especially went nuts over the "Croc Hunter" and "Junk Yard Wars". This inspired us to build a go-kart ourselves in true junk yard fashion. We scounged, bought, sweated, and designed it together. On July 4th as we worked the conversation turned to what we would name it. Without hesitation she piped up "How about "Firecracker"? Even her older brothers agreed. (a miracle in itself) The following year when we purchased our C22 we turned to her for ideas. With her hand on her chin she asks "Well, what kind of boat is it?" "A pocket cruiser" I replied. She pops right out with "How about "Pick Pocket?". We slightly refined it to reflect the history of what owning a boat can easily be. "Picked Pocket"

Antares

This is my second boat named Antares. Just like the name. The alternate was Polaris.

Back to the Future

We purchased a used Tartan 37 last fall that had been re-named from its origional. During the winter months, heater plugged in and stocking hat on, I installed some new items and re-built the water damaged interior. Since the boat had been raced on the Great Lakes, every removable piece of the interior was labeled with the not the current name, but the origional "Apparition II" We did not care for her current name, so back we went. Now if we sink, at least our floating parts will tell our story.

Valhalla

Several years ago my wife and I bought a M 26S, in perfect condition. The boat had been sailed very litle, and had not been named. I am of Norse heritage, and we live in the great northland. A name that reflected heritage as well as our passion for sailing seemed fitting. In Norse mythology, "Valhalla" is the home of the gods, and is where all good vikings hope to go when they pass on. In short, "Valhalla" is viking heaven, which is exactly where we are when sailing her!

It's not right unless you get goose bumps!

When we ordered our new 36' Catalina, we spent DAYS running over lists of possible names. I carried around a TOP 10 list in my purse & bounced it off of folks I came in contact with. Daily, names were added & deleted. My friend said, "When you find the right name, it will just HIT YOU". One night, I woke up & IT HIT ME: Windy City! When my hubby woke up & I told him, He said he got goose bumps!! We were both raised in Chicago suburbs & love the city in the summer. We got the Blues Brothers singing "sweet home Chicago" on CD & play it before every race & dance like crazy!! You gotta get the goose bumps!

Hmmmm. A lot of good choises

My favorite isn't here. I saw a scow named "Minnow Paws" in the Walt Kelly cartoon strip in about 1967. Didn't "get" it for a few years. I have an O'day 25 and I might name it what my wife said when she saw it the first time. Oh.... get it.

TuSalen

Since the old name needed replacing anyway, we tried to give our boat a name that had not been used a hundred times before. We bought our 1986 Hunter 45 to sail the Caribbean. There are two of us on board and we are out there sailing, hence the name TuSalen.

"Sailbad the Sinner"

Saw that one last year. Another good one is "Saline Solution".
