Sea Dation

We named our boat Sea-Dation, the name really has to do with the feeling the boat gives both of us while sailing. She was used, did not have a name prior to our taking her over. The sedation also has to do with Bern's Nursing duties in an operating room, not the amount of wine or beer we enjoy after a great day on the bay.

Shadowfax

My wife is into horses, I am into sailing. So, in honor of her I named the boat after a horse. To keep it fare I named the boat after the fastest of all horses according to Tolkein, now hopefully the boat will live up to the name in the fall series! Orysglory

Originally Orysglory (30' Catalina)was the first to be named then came along Orysglory II (a 37' Cutter Cherubini Hunter). Named because Ory being my last name and both boats were very glorious in sailing and the glory in ones heart.

choices. . .

Just got our Capri 22 last year, already named Coyote (which my wife and I didn't like). Having heard that changing the name was bad luck, I figured we'd just stick with it anyway until we noticed, on a day when the light was just right, that the first owners (we are the third) had named it Cheap Thrills. So we decided that if changing the name cursed a boat, ours was already cursed and we may as well have a name we like. The boat was a wedding present, and since all boats cost their owners lots of money we were thinking of calling it the White Elephant. But although my generous in-laws have a sense of humor, it just didn't seem grateful. We have decided to name her Cayo Jueso. That is what Key West was originally called, in Spanish it means Bone Island. My wife and I went to Key West for our honeymoon, the boat was a wedding present, and my wife teaches high school spanish for a living, so it all ties together. Now we just need to get around to actually changing it! (and there will be ceremony) btw, in one of the pictures posted (Tenacity, was it?) in the background there is a green striped boat named the Green Hornet. I though that was pretty cool, too.

Solas - the easing of grief, to comfort

The name of my 1986 P-33 is Solas (old English form of Solace). This was her name when I bought her 3 years ago. I kept the name, but not for the obvious reasons - superstition, etc. In early 2000 my father & I began to seriously look for a boat to buy together. It was to be an upgrade from the 27 hunter he owned when I was growing up, which he sold 10 years ago. In May of 2000 my father past away suddenly of a heart attack, at 57. A few months later, to make us feel better, my mother, my wife & I decided to go look at some boats. We saw several, but were not impressed. Then, we were shown Solas. She appeared to be everything that my dad & I had wanted, but she was a bit more than I could afford to spend alone. Something just seemed right about her. Curious about the name, we looked it up in the dictionary. What we found blew us away. The definition of Solas is "the easing of grief & loneliness. to comfort." After that, the 3 of us decided to buy it together, but only if the previous owners allowed us to keep the name.

Boat name

For our new boat, we poured through literally thousands of names trying to come up with something appropriate, radio-friendly, and unusual. One night the Admiral was watching a National Geographic TV story about elephants, one of which was named "Jabu." Turns out that "jabu" means "happiness" in Zulu. I would bet that we now have the only boat named after an elephant, although a Westminster national champion boxer was named "Jabu" as are a couple of basketball players.

Calico Dragon dinghy name

Since there doesn't seem to be a name for a non-existent baby dragon, why not Calico Draggin'? Fair winds.

Lasata

Whats in a name anyway?

Lasata, previously known as Bodacious, was renamed a few short months after I purchased her as my first live aboard Racer/Cruiser. I followed all of the appropriate, recommended "de-naming" and "naming" ceremonial rituals that I found on the internet. After diligently removing all traces of the old name, I "de-named" the boat and added a measure of safety by asking for leniency in advance for those items I may have overlooked. I also purchased a moderately expensive bottle of champagne for the "naming" ceremony. Though I have no actual data to support the claim, but my children have said the boat feels "more peaceful" since the naming ceremony. I'm not sure if it is a result of the ceremony, or if it is because I told them the name "Lasata" comes from an article I read about Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis' childhood. Jacqueline's grandfather had an estate on Long Island named "Lasata," which it is said to be a Native American word meaning "place of peace." It might just as likely be the fact that I am no longer a stressed out mess, about getting the name fixed to the transom and paid proper tribute to King Neptune, asking his blessing.

Easy Choice

My spouse is Eileen, which I consider a very appropriate name for a sailboat. The sailing dinghy is "I Lean, Too" and the inflatable is "I Don't".

Off to see the wizard . . .

Have owned a 1981 model H-22 for about a year and although it did have a name at one time in the past I never did find out what it was. The outboard is mounted on the starboard side leaving a small space on the port for a name and while aproaching the boat from the beach one day it dawned on me that the word "OZ" would fit just right in large enough letters to be seen from a pretty good distance. Not only does it fit the enchantment I feel while sailing but it allows me to address myself as "The Wizard" which by far pleases me more than captain. Sail On!

Named it Aeronaut

I am a biology professor and wanted to mix that in with sailing. Our first sailboat (a 15-foot day sailer) was named CALIDRIS, the generic (genus) name for a sandpiper. Our new boat (MacGregor 26x) was going to be much faster (not to mention roomier, enclosed head, etc.), so I thought of the bird called the Whit-throated Swift. It's generic name is Aeronautes. We shortened it to AERONAUT which literally means "traveler through the air" and designed a logo: a half-hitch with an arrow on one end. If and when we get a dingy, we'll probably name it COLLOCALIA, the generic name of the swiftlet.

Next Friday

We bought the boat from the floor of a boat show about 150 miles away , in March , lots of snow here in Nova Scotia at that time , I ask the dealer to deliver the boat early in April so I could get an early start on the season. In the mean time we went through books of names for boats and couldn't find a suitable name. Finally my son said "Next Friday" I said what , well he said , they keep promising to deliver it next week , next Wednesday , next friday , well it sounded good ,so we decided to call her Next Friday . The Beneteau sales person finally came after about a month and ask what we called the boat , I told him and he said , you would'nt tell any body ? I certainly will and here 's the proof. Rae.

My Tur n seemed right.

After using the Home Equity for the college tuitions, my sweet wife thought I deserved a treat. In the conversation over the cost and expense of a boat my response was it was now "My Turn". She laughed and thought it was a good boat name too.

Frequency

I'm in the Radio business, general sales manager for the advertising dept. I wanted to name my Catalina sometihing to tie-in to radio. My first thought was "Radio Waves", but my wife said because I spend so much time on the boat (75 days a year)and to tie-into radio we named the boat Frequency

The Naming of Grainne II

Our first boat was named Grainne, after the 16th century Irish female pirate captain, Grainne Ni Mhaille (Grace O'Malley, anglicized). My daughter and I have always been fascinated with the life and times of Grainne and we felt that she was the perfect namesake for our little homes on the water. When we sold the last boat, we actually did a ceremony releasing the name and all of it's attachments from that boat so we would be free to use it again. When we launch G II, as we call her, yes, she will be launched with full ceremony and pomp as befits a fine lady of the sea! Fair winds and following seas to all!

Blue Jacket

Blue Jacket, a Catalina 30, is my second boat with this name, the first a Cal 20. It has a special meaning for me as I am a retired Blue Jacket. 21 years in the submarine force. I,ve been told that there have been some well known boats with the name.

"Cygnus"

My wife and I are both JN's in the USPS, and I am currently studying for my N, so we picked a name that had to do with stars. We chose the constellation "Cygnus" for the above reason and because a sailboat reminds us of a swan gliding effortlessly across the water.

Just a recognized nautical term...

I wanted a name that was unique... not something like "dream catcher"... could a name be more un-original? And I was thinking of nautical terms..... I decided on "Three Sheets". My Hunter 25 indeed does have three sheets: 2 on the jib & 1 on the main.
