That is pretty much what I do as well, I usually buy long metal fishing leaders, fold them in half, works great
At the moment I am trying something similar with the double braid, I got a piece of bailing wire from work, folded it in half, made a handle by folding the other end and taping them together, will try it soon and report back

Ok, so I did try my baling wire, it does work a lot better than the fid, had to modify it a bit as it was way too long.
Now having said that, there seems to be a major lump that I cannot get to go through, not sure if I am doing something wrong or just inept, but there seems to be too much material to go in, is it because I am making a small eye loop? Or did I mess up? Not sure, any ideas anyone???

I have tried the Samson Rope splicing kit. It was so difficult.
I replaced it with the Selma FID - Ultimate Rope Splicing Tool kit. I find that they are considerably better. I can splice Dyneema without the fid catching fibers. The 1/4 fits in the 5/16 fid, eliminating the hangups. They ae a bit more expensive, but if you are going to splice rope they are an improved tool.
