Hi all, I've been working on a 1991 Catalina 28 for 6 months or so. The main issue with her so far is this odd keel wobble at the hull/keel trunk joint. After some consultation with local fiberglass folks and a (mostly intentional) drill sample, it does appear the laminates are good and Catalina was able to further uncover the mystery by confirming that the fiberglass work in the bilge was not original. All in all, it looks as though she was grounded and repaired at one point. Based on all this investigation and some conversation with the original designer, this doesn't appear to be a critical issue, but I'd still like to fix it if possible. My current theory is that the repair didn't extend the keel thwarts widely enough to provide lateral support. If you look at the attached photo, my thwarts stop at the top of the sump and there's only some thinner garboard on either side. Looking at the keel sumps of other 90's Catalinas, it appears that the thwarts normally extend further across the garboards but I haven't been able to find any solid information/photos on the 91' Catalina 28.
Do any of you have any insight into how the keel sump originally looked or even pictures? Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!
