Back in 1999 or 2000 I spotted an H37C on the hard on Radio Island, NC. That's the island you drive across between Morehead City and Beaufort. Or was it Pivers Island where the Marine Lab is located. You could see it from the highway if you knew where to look. The boat was in pretty sad shape. I wonder if any of our members know if that H37C was saved. I have been past there many times since but never think to look. Maybe I can find it with Google Earth? :)

I remember that I turned off of the old Causeway Road onto one of those two islands. Then I turned left on the first road on the island. Maybe I only thought it was a 37. Definitely a Cherubini with five portlights. Can't remember if the rig was up. Usually I look for the baby stay to be sure.

We do know that there is an H37C listed in Morehead City. Its "Obsession", a 1980 belonging to John Jarvis. I have an older spreadsheet and that boat is not on it. I also found one in Beaufort, #289, named "Always Sunday". Not on my spreadsheet.

Thanks for checking "bug", wish I could get down there.

H37C Database

Thanks Ed, you are right - there is no #289 on my list. I would guess she is a late '82 by the hull number. I'll try and cross-reference by state and see if I can come up with some possibilities. There are 238 'hits' when I search the SailboatOwners Owner Directory by keywords "Hunter" and "cutter". Many of these are duplicate entries, where the boat has changed hands or the owner has re-registered. I am slowly working through the list, trying to correct duplicate entries. And there is still the possibility that boat names have changed and the same boat is in there twice. That's why I am refining my database by including HINs where possible - the only sure way to uniquely identify our boats. So far I have about 81 boats definitively nailed down. I have been writing to owners through HOW or by email to try and get as much good data as possible. It is a slow process, but I have been meeting some great people along the way, so its all worth it. :D

Hi John and thank you for the information. I am puzzled about your HIN though...either the hull # or the build month (letter at the end) is possibly incorrect. HUN37323M83D (Malaya) and HUN37325M83D (Courageous) should bracket your boat according to hull #, but both were built in November whereas the "F" in your HIN indicates January. I would guess that either you have a higher hull # (334?) or the last letter of your HIN should be "D". Perhaps the next time you are on board, you could have a check and get back to me?

Many thanks, Jim
Jim,

I am on board looking at it, the 324 and the F are both clearly stamped in the transom - don't know what to say.

It is 55 deg, wind south south east at 10 knots.

John

Thanks for double checking John. Who knows, maybe Hunter skipped a number in the sequence and used it a couple of months later? It is what it is, but an interesting anomoly nonetheless. They changed the HIN scheme for the 1984/85 models too. I guess as long as its a unique number, that's all that matters.

55 degrees & 10 knots - that would be a nice fall sail in Nova Scotia. 5 degrees & 10 knots here this morning. I'm jealous!

Hi Jim and group, I've been a member for a while but mostly reading and not much contribution. I have a 1979 37c called ALATI registration number HUN37086M79I and is located in Lucaya GBI.The boat is Canadian registered out of Nova Scotia, originally called SeaScape out of the Chesapeak, hope that helps. Looking forward to posting some pictures soon.

OK, for now I have gone about as far as I can with the H37 Cutter Database project. I will continue to maintain it and will update the database when owners send me new info, but I won't post anymore about the database on this thread. I have discovered 275 Hunter 37C owners on SailboatOwners.com but I have positively identified only 90 boats by HIN. Obviously some of the owners listed on SBO.com are previous owners, sometimes both owner and spouse are listed and so on. But there are a lot of people who just don't care to share their HIN (which is fine). The database has allowed me to glimpse something of the production history of our boats. Refering to model years (not build years) 1979, 1980 and 1984 were the models of greatest production. 1983 was a retooling year when Hunter changed the deck molds and relatively few were built. I found the first boat (hull #1 is Shadow Jack in Louisiana) but not definitively the last (#403, Lonesome Dove in New Jersey is the last one I could find). I guess not surprisingly there are more Hunter 37 Cutters in Florida than anywhere else. But you might see a H37C anywhere from Scotland to the South Pacific and everywhere in between. Some of our boats have been dismasted by planes or sunk by hurricanes but these are tough boats that tend to make comebacks! But I think the neatest thing about these boats is the kind of people who own them: friendly, sharing and caring. Thank you to all who took the time to share their H37C experiences with me!

Jim,

Hul# HUN 37203M81B Vessel Name: Hespera, Hailing Port: Howell, NJ. Kept at Ted and Son's Marina, Forked River, NJ. Owners: Allen and Mark Halprin.

My father, Allen and I purchased the boat in June of 2007. I have not spent much time looking through this forum, but it looks like a great place to go for info from fellow "do it your selfers".

Thanks,

Mark Halprin
