Honda BF5A 5 Hp 4 Stroke.

Trying to get working after sitting 4 years. Its said to have ran good 4 years ago. 4 years ago the PO changed the main oil and the gear oil... then it was never touched until now. Sat in a garage for 4 or 5 years. Now hoping there's not too much to repair/replace after that long nap she took.
Also can not figure out the year. I've looked everywhere cant get a confirmed year so I can get the manual.

I'm assuming will need....

New Impeller. (would I also need to replace any gaskets here..?)
Clean the carb.
replace fuel filter?
New Plug
Oil
Gear Oil
Fuel filter
Anything else I'm missing....?

--------

It was not seized at all. I gave it a couple pulls and the recoil gear cog jumped up and over top of the starter flywheel. This was dumb to try to start it without lubricating? Could I have done damage? I did though just get the recoil and all back and that is working again.
What should I have done in this situation as first action?.. taken off spark plug and just pour some mystery oil in there than manually twist the flywheel clockwise gently to disperse it?) .

----------

I did find the stamped Engine serial # bade1210150
Says model is BF5A. But can not find the product # and cant figure out the year to get the manual and order parts.(Says product # should be stamped on swivel case.. but It's not, looked everywhere, 3 times, lol)

Searching for year/model using these numbers.,... I'm seeing anywhere from a 1991 to a 1997? Can anyone tell me what year this is and where to find the manual for it online?

------

There is a cap missing down lower on the shaft (see pic) ? Is that bad after sitting for 4 years like that in a garage?
----

Thanks guys... Really appreciate your help! I want to learn... and everyone's been really haling me along on these forums.

The impeller needs to be replaced every year. Instructions are in the link below. The grommet extension is missing, so you will need to replace it.

Have you checked with a Honda dealer for the manual? That serial number doesn't appear in the list of manuals for the BF5A. The motor is probably one of the early production runs or it may have been a model destined for a country other than the US. A dealer or calling Honda directly might be helpful.

The manual for the BF5C is probably similar to the manual for the BF5A.

A third party shop manual might also be helpful.

One challenge with a small engine sitting for 4 years the abundance of ethanol in common fuel used. In addition to cleaning the carb, be ready to replace all the hoses and probably the gaskets. Good luck.

I believe the PO used ethanol free only... so maybe the gaskets and hoses will be fine. All that I have seen so far look good still.

I have the carb apart and it really looks pretty good surprisingly.

He sad he changed the oil and lower gear oil when he got it, but then never used it after that (for 4 years). So the oil looks clear and the lower gear oil looks like it just went in. Should I still replace the oil and gear oil even if it was never used (for 4 years)?

Thanks for the info and pdf.

Yeah couldn't find that serial number anywhere and the outboard didn't have the usual physical plate with serial on it anywhere. After a ton of searching I ended up on this one... it seems like the right one and all parts so far look identical. Hope so cause I ordered over $100 of parts for it ,lol What do you think?

What is the BF5C?

Whats a third party shop manual?

I would. I like a record of oil change maintenance. But maybe that is just OCD bubbling

The serial number is stamped into the engine. Yours starts BADE 121...

The BF5C is a slightly different model of Honda's 5HP motor. Over the course of building an engine model Honda probably made small changes in the engine. The different letters indicate which production run the engine built.

A third party manual is essentially a copy of the Honda shop manual produced by a company other than Honda. Often it will include several different models in one book.

Anyone have an opinion whether I did damage by being an idiot and just trying to yank on the pull start like 10 times before I even did anything to a 4 year sitting motor? Just trying to figure out to what extent that could have made problems... and what those problems might be.....

To my knowledge, several slow pull throughs of the starter cord is pretty much SOP on most all small displacement outboards. This is to ensure that the oil has coated the internals. So, I would venture to say no harm, no foul.

Pulling to the starer 10 times wont hurt the motor after sitting so long. i would not be worried.

I hear things like without first lubricating a sitting motor you can tear piston rings and damage the walls of the cylinder and stuff like that. I mean it makes sense.... Or are those just like nightmare stories.

It was not seized, but I wasn't thinking and just yanked on it pretty good for a dozen tries before I realized the facts about the motor sitting for 4 years. Still you don't think this would do any real harm?

If you have a endoscope that would fit in the spark plug hole you might be able to take a look and see if there is any rust, major scoring or possibly see if there was a broken ring.

I had a mechanic work on one of my two stroke outboards that wouldn't start after sitting for too long. He said he flushed out the carbs by filling the bowls with carb cleaner and some other secret ingredient. I still don't know what the secret ingredient is
