It's a ridiculous design. My humble opinion is, plug it and install a proper drain:

Did you find that space that clean or did you have to cut out extra fiberglass that was excess/spilled during construction. Mine is a mess behind that trim!! You could reach the lower bow eye in your..

I thought MINE was a mess! I found it like this when I first removed the trim. Nice hole saw work by the PO, huh? I'm still not sure if he used a 3/8 drill bit to make that opening, or a trained rat. In any case, he then packed the white stuff (MarineTex?) up in there, in a failed attempt to stop the leak.

You think if I chipped the white stuff out, I could reach the lower bow eye nut??

Did the PO claw out that access hole to try to fix the anchor locker drain from leaking?

It’s approximately 3” from the bottom of the locker. My concern would be getting torque on the nut. No leverage. I would still go thru the locker. My area has so much extra fiberglass material (spilled) I can’t even get my hand in there. It would be a disaster getting it to look like yours.

Look at it this way - you have a real tough bow on your boat. Good to have a tough bow at any moment of impact.

LOL ... yup.
The old saying about having more money than brains seems to hold true - more often than you would expect. We're all at least 2nd owners, and judging from the crazy, clawed up, PO looking repairs and modifications, often seen on this forum, the first guys owning them look like they paid first and stopped really thinking..

I have the same problem on the bolt. I have noy looked further into it but from what I've heard and seen on the forum, I think I am going to get with some of my friends in the local Expeirment Aircraft Association to fabricate a nose block of kevlar, you won't break that....

Contact Catalina Direct, on the few occasions that I have talked to them, they have been very helpful and seemed happy to help.

I'm facing that dilemma as well, wondering if the lower nut can be reached from underneath, but it looks as though cutting out a chunk of the anchor locker is inevitable

I have messaged Catalina Yachts, this morning, about this problem, I asked if the anchor box was a structural issue. I will let you know their suggestion to gain access.

Gene, what was the size (ID) of the new drain? Would you change the size if you did it again? Do you have any kind of screen on the fitting in the locker to prevent the drain hose getting stopped up?

That's a really good question! Hard to believe it's been ten years since I did that job. I had to take the calipers out just now and measure stuff.

The through hull fitting has 1" threads. The black hose is roughly .82 outside, so I guess it must be 1/2" ID. Good thing I measured, I would have guessed it was bigger.

I don't use any kind of screen. It has always done a good job draining the chain locker, and I have no complaints. I would probably use the same size if I had to do it again. I would definitely not use anything smaller.

Side note. The mushroom head of the through hull stands 1/4" or so above the floor of the locker, so it always held water in there and it bugged me. So I mixed up some slightly thickened epoxy, and poured about 1/4" of it into the bottom of the locker. No more puddle.

How did you know where to put the though hull drain in the hull? And, did you use any other sealer in addition to the rubber gasket on the through hull drain device?
I bought a 3/4 and it's too big. Reordering a 1/2 today.

I took a lot of vertical measurements and scratched my head a lot. The drain had to be above the waterline, but at least an inch or so below the V berth. Not a ton of room for error. Fore and aft was more of an aesthetic question. I'll post a pic from outside the hull.

I wouldn't use a rubber gasket on a through hull fitting. I personally used Sikaflex 291. But since it's above the waterline, you could use Life-calk, 3M 4200, butyl tape ... pretty much anything other than silicone, or 3M 5200.

PS - I can take measurements on the precise location of that fitting from the outside, if you want.

That would be great. Did you drill from the outside or inside and did you use a hole saw or paddle bit?

Sorry for all the questions. Just bought a new to me 1986 and, while it looked to be in pretty good shape, I missed a lot of small things that I now have to fix. I've decided not to put it in the water until I fix the bow eye, anchor locker leaks and replace the keel bolts. Lots more to do over the winter.

No problem, happy to help! I drilled from outside, with a hole saw.
