One thing I found odd is when he got his fiberglass patch kit out to fix the hole. He started from the top and worked down and got thinner as he was running low on matting and resin. I believe I would have started from the bottom up making even layers. His fiberglass job looked thick at the top and very thin at the bottom to me.
Ah, well, that's the thing, isn't it? See, you have some common sense. I think we have established on this thread that Redford's character did not represent the kind of common sense, rationality of thought, or competence that would be exhibited by someone who had the resources and opportunity to be in the situation he was in on this boat. Maybe he was a lottery winner or something, and hadn't actually been successful at anthing that required competence. Not sure what else would explain this character (other than poor technical consulting by the producers, that is...). Evidently Robert Redford is not a sailor himself, or he surely would have insisted on changing at least some of the more obvious and simple faux pas during production.

I think several have made the case for this movie to be an excellent candidate for a training film. "Watch this movie, and see how many of the inappropriate events, actions or props you can identify."

I've always considered Captain Ron our training film on how to do things. I may have to add this one to the collection on how not to do things...

(I agree, Dove was outstanding!)

The Commodore purchased this film for me as a Valentine's gift. We watched it with open minds as to cinema inaccuracies.

After it was over her first comment was "I should have bought the Croods instead"

I AGREED!

Don't waste your time or money.

Saw the movie last night and that's the exact 2nd question I asked. 1st was why didn't he use a pail to bail out the water from his cabin?

Robert Redford using a common pail? PLEASE! How crude :-D

We just saw it what a waste of our time. From the start holed by a container with no wind no sails up and he didn't wake up until the boat has a foot of water in it. Then the first thing he did was put it on a tack that put more water in the boat. It got worse from there.

I just watched it. Yikes, remind me never to invite him sailing. While I enjoyed the movie for the survival story, it certainly didn't qualify as anything I consider even remotely accurate. I can only remember one other story where the character had worse luck. Anyone remember Jonah? How about the Pequod?

Oh yeah, let's hope they do a better job with, "The Shipkiller," if they ever get off their duffs and make it.

At least he put the whiskey and the glasses away before the storm, but then a shave? I think there were much more pressing issues than a shave before a storm sweeps over your boat.

Gotta agree with that. Man the nicks would be plentiful trying to pull the shave during a storm trick. All those butterflies would have been needed to hold his lips on after that.

Must have been one hell of a close shave though. He went for several days afterward and no fresh stubble!

Yeah, I thought that was fishy, too. I threw it off as he's just an old man who needs his naps and is slow to wake, but now that I think about it, if something hit my boat hard enough to put a 2 foot hole in it, I'd be standing up before the floor even got wet.

Also, with no speed a Cal 39 would have bounced right off that thing, especially a glancing blow aft like that.

Only as good as your material......

after reading this thread ...... has just proved to me one more time that you are only as good as your material...havent seen the movie yet (not available in my location) but all i read here is that the tech guys are non existent in this movie when it comes to sailing......Redford has always been a good actor and had some great parts in the past ....it seems to me he has chosen a not so good script this time......maybe he should have taken a sailing course before taking this part in order to be better informed.......

I agree. If the guy can sleep through getting banged by a container, I would be a little concerned sleeping in his life raft being tethered to a sinking ship. I guess he would have woke up after being dragged down a few feet.

Big year for sailing movies...

I recommend, see 'All is lost" for the cinematography (ocean shots) My other favorites:

1) Raw Faith- real life sailing obsession, Ahab type protagonist, loses wife, house money...ect...to pursue fame? brazilian girls?

2) Ice Blink- more successful sailor brings family into live-aboard life yet still buys a house.

3) Wild Eyes- Abby Sunderlands knockdown finishes RTW attempt, not quiet the Laura Dekker ending but interesting backround about how these things come together.

S & S 34 I'll leave for another post, but that boat seems successful in getting youngin's Round the World. Abby had a 40' sailboat that got overpowered then rolled.

As long as there's still snow on the ground, we may as well be recommending our favorite movies with a sailing theme ...

I know it is a bit corny, but I love "Wind" every time I see it. I normally can't stand Mathew Modine but even he can't ruin the movie for me. We saw it recently in HD on our 60" screen and it was fantastic!

The other that I like is "Masquerade" with Rob Lowe. It is an excellent mystery with some great sailing in it as well, set in The Hamptons. Lots of visuals which are well worth the time ... I'd like to find this one in HD come to think of it. The last time I saw it was with VHF.

I was so bored the other night that I watched "The Voyage of the Yes" on Youtube. The entire movie was uploaded. It's from back in the early 70's with Desi Arnez Jr and the dude who played Lionel on The Jeffersons. Not a bad movie but the sound sucks.

One of my all time favorite movies (sailing and otherwise) is "Master and Commander: The Far side of the World" with Russel Crow (but I think I look better on the cover ;)

White Squall comes to mind. Kinda like the Bounty disaster. Wind was great for the sailing scenes even if the story was a little off.

If you have never seen the black and white movie Captain's Courageous, you might be missing the best sailing sequence ever filmed. When those large schooners are racing back to sell their catch through rough seas....omg it is spectacular. The panned shots are real, the close ups of the dialog are sound stage. But the sailing done for the movie is just epic. The full length movie is available on Youtube in HD for $1.99

White Squall I can watch repeatedly as I can The Dove.

I get a laugh out of the Whomper in Wind and the sailing cinematography is very pretty, the story is just pathetic. But still pretty to watch.

Captain Ron is still in heavy rotation with us. We may have watched it a dozen times.

If you have not seen Captain's Courageous, give yourself a treat.
