Ah, well, that's the thing, isn't it? See, you have some common sense. I think we have established on this thread that Redford's character did not represent the kind of common sense, rationality of thought, or competence that would be exhibited by someone who had the resources and opportunity to be in the situation he was in on this boat. Maybe he was a lottery winner or something, and hadn't actually been successful at anthing that required competence. Not sure what else would explain this character (other than poor technical consulting by the producers, that is...). Evidently Robert Redford is not a sailor himself, or he surely would have insisted on changing at least some of the more obvious and simple faux pas during production. One thing I found odd is when he got his fiberglass patch kit out to fix the hole. He started from the top and worked down and got thinner as he was running low on matting and resin. I believe I would have started from the bottom up making even layers. His fiberglass job looked thick at the top and very thin at the bottom to me.
I think several have made the case for this movie to be an excellent candidate for a training film. "Watch this movie, and see how many of the inappropriate events, actions or props you can identify."
I've always considered Captain Ron our training film on how to do things. I may have to add this one to the collection on how not to do things...
(I agree, Dove was outstanding!)
