I recommend that everyone learn to play a musical instrument. Any instrument.

The folks in New England are snowed in and need something worth while to do?

He might not be pretty but he's one heck of a musician. Here's a little something for all the Texans in the crowd.

Reminds me of a time I walked into a bar in Tacoma for a brewski. Heard whoever singing "Sailing wish I was sailing". Thought it sounded very familiar. I neglected to checkout the billboard since it was late and not many people around. It was Christopher Cross. Love the song.

My hats off to Scott T-Bird for starting a thread that woke everyone up. It had been pretty quite around here. Glad to see everyone is still around.

I hope the weather breaks soon so we can all get back to working on our boats.
Like the old Dick Clark American Bandstand thing,
" I give it a "3" :Too slow and you can't dance to it!
Actually, you need to have something like the theme music from "Top Gun" to get the crew motivated on the way to the starting line... or at least to pep up the bottom painting.

It's "80 feet of waterline nicely making way". I also like the line "in a noisy bar in Avalon" reminds me of the many years I lived in So Cal and took the boat to Avalon and the Isthmus. The song Sailing is not bad but in my opinion Southern Cross is much better as is the Sloop John B

He never actually says it's a bass boat so I felt free to adopt it...
Have you seen the video??? ;^)

My fiancée Jodi loves this song. So of course we play it on the boat.
I have now! But I still maintain my position. And I like Jodi already.

You have to be in the right local to enjoy the music. Scott's song fits very well here in the Abaco's where you just need to hoist the sails every day. The Edmond Fitzgerald just doesn't have the same ring.

its not a favorite of mine, but it is "palatable"... and its a good easy filler song to bulk up the song library.

I believe the song to be written not so much about sailing, but the romance of the memories that sailing brings to mind... ALL of us who have ever had a perfectly relaxing sailing adventure have these kind of memories on cold winter days, or when daydreaming while trying to withstand the drudgery of the work place...
the christopher cross lyrics are what he felt and was able to get on paper and put a tune to.... if anyone of us would stop daydreaming about our pleasant sailing memories and take the time to write our thoughts down, surely someone could come up with something better... but it would undoubtedly be something very different.

as for someone else being able to do the "sailing" song better, I will agree that nearly anyone can take something that is someone elses idea and make it better, as all the really hard work has been done.. which is come up with the idea and develop it into something that is to some degree, usable...
and no, the song is not on my normal playlist.

So many cool sea and sailing songs and ballads out there. Songwriters definitely like to romanticize both and use them as analogies of love, life and death.

"Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than those you did. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from safe harbor. Catch the wind in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."

— Mark Twain
