A serious question.

Southern Cross was written as he sailed south from Hawaii to Tahiti on his own sail boat. It was an old, traditional gaff rigged Baltic trader, not some fancy rich man's yacht. Long before GPS, chartplotters and AIS, too. Perhaps that might give the song more meaning for you.
Interesting. The southern cross was used for navigation in the southern hemisphere.
It has been used in many logos, including the 1st Marine Division at Guadacanal

I like this lyric:

I know everybody says
Money can’t buy happiness

But it could buy me a boat, it could buy me a truck to pull it
It could buy me a Yeti 110 iced down with some silver bullets
Yeah, and I know what they say,
Money can’t buy everything
Well, maybe so,
But it could buy me a boat

(Chris Janson, "Buy Me a Boat")
He never actually says it's a bass boat so I felt free to adopt it...

My fiancée Jodi loves this song. So of course we play it on the boat.

I know a pretty good breakup song if you ever need one. If anyone wants it I'll send it via private message. Posting just the title would get me banned for life.

Believe Crosby's boat (Mayan) was an Alden schooner Capt. Heard she has a new owner, one of those dot.com SanFran guys (should keep her well maintained for a few more decades!) :

That is so weird. When I was reading the email the song came on the radio. What are the chances? Should I buy a lottery ticket or hide under my bed?

Mayan looks to have about 80' on the waterline. Can't we spot him a little leeway on poetic license?

Kermit, you're not talking to Jackdaw, I hope ... sheesh! He just got engaged!
Absolutely not! I'm just offering to anyone who may want it. Jackdaw is gonna make his bride very happy.

Also I'm looking at that picture trying to figure out the sail configuration. I'm weak on schooner terminology but what is that sail flying from the main(?) mast. It looks like a spinnaker but the boat is on a starboard jibe on a beam reach. The picture seems to show the sail deployed to port. I think I see the foot of the sail under the fore (?) sail. Is it an optical illusion? And wow they have a lot more sail up than the cutter to windward of them.

Name's Beau Vrolyk. A friend of mine, a great guy and a great sailor. And yes he takes VERY good care of his boats. ;^)

I was playing weddings in a band a long time ago and the bride and groom wished to have their first dance to "Sailing". I tried to talk them out of it. I kept telling them "this isn't a song folks can dance to" and "you will end up alone on the dance floor". They insisted and guess what...it was a total disaster ...the song has no repeats...no chorus...it starts and goes to the end. It's more difficult to play that most would think. The band sounded great...but guess what ..THEY COULDN'T DANCE TO IT AND THEY ENDED UP ALONE ON THE DANCE FLOOR LOOKING LIKE THEY WERE IN A MAJOR DRUNK STUPOR TRYING TO KEEP EACH OTHER UP...I know I speak for most of the folks there..SO GLAD IT WAS OVER. That being said...its on my IPod in the "Sailing" song list...:yeah:

Go To" music when a stinkboater starts coming into an anchorage
That's a good use of music. Might also play it as your leaving the marina heading out into a Gale. Let the marina queens know your a sailor and going to take the wind to task.

What is "John B. Sails" - the Beach Boys song "Sloop John B"? Now that is a good song, for boating or not. How about Carly Simon's "Never Been Gone" or Billy Joel's "Downeaster Alexa"? How do we waste so much time on threads like this?
