A serious question.

"Sailing" is not my cup of tea. Something about the dreamy melody doesn't hold my attention. I just watch the video from Jackdaw, and I'll admit it's well done. But it's early 80's Fern Bar music that drove me to talk radio. Air Supply ... don't get me started. The decade is a pop music wasteland.

The sound of choppers. More memories.
It's time to get a play list together for the season.

I've never been a coformist on this forum. Quite honestly I don't understand what y'all hate about it. It's not my absolute favorite but it's a nice little ditty.
I particularly like this for sailing.
But then not all music on a boat needs to have sailing references.
Y'all let me know if you want more.

Where's "Southern Cross" in all this? Come on guys

I turn "sailing" off when I hear it, always though I do have the CD or maybe the cassette. I think it was an attempt for a "mood" when the opposite sex was aboard.

Another pair of songs I absolutely cannot stand is "God Bless the USA" and "Wind Beneath my Wings" I think it is because they were played damn near endlessly on the radio and performed (often poorly) at so many functions I had to attend during the first gulf war.

oops
saw the second page knew it had to come up

Another one that always worked though doubt there are many who know it is "Honolulu City Lights". A nice bottle of wine "or box" sailing off of Waikiki, worked every time. Maybe it was just me and my charm?

I agree with Kermit, not all music on board needs to be sailing related. I prefer anything that gets Cindy dancing and swinging around the mast. :dancing:

I kinda don't like "Sailing" but I don't hate it either. It has a certain nostalgia aspect to it, having grown up back then, which automatically improves it and puts it closer to the "like" column. I have it as part of my Ultimate 80's Playlist (732-something songs,) but I'm just as likely to skip it when it comes up than to listen to it. It seems I always skip the Air Supply songs I included (they were phenomenally popular, so had to be included.) Maybe it's that all the Air Supply songs remind me of the crushes I had on the cute girls in high school. At my 30 year HS reunion, I found some of those crushes were as adorable now as back then. Dayum! Also had someone tell me that they crushed on me back then, which made me frantically try to remember if I was ever a dick to her. I don't think I was, at least I wasn't actively dickish, but I definitely would never have returned the sentiment, which still makes me feel passively dickish. Well, I was definitely much more of a dick in my mid-20's after I got divorced. Got that out of my system by the time I lost my mojo in my 30's... Wait, what was the question again?

I can understand some disdain for "Southern Cross". I lost interest in CSNY long before they got to that point. By the end of my HS days, they had done their best collectively and individually, as far as I could tell. CSN came out at the end of college, and it sounded good, but lacked interest to me. Since then, I've paid no attention to all CSNY new material, except for Neil Young individually. They seemed to waste a good thing after just 2 albums together. The song does have a few good lines, though! "On a midnight watch I realized why twice you ran away!"
So, Louie Louie is a good sailing song, but I could never make out the lyrics! We just thought we knew what they were!

The Kingsmen, "Louie, Louie" First album I ever bought as a teen. Couldn't play it when mom was home, though. :badbad:

I had no idea what they were singing. Just sounded good!

Louie Louie
The Kingsmen
Louie Louie, oh no
Me gotta go
Aye-yi-yi-yi, I said
Louie Louie, oh baby
Me gotta go
Fine little girl waits for me
Catch a ship across the sea
Sail that ship about, all alone
Never know if I make it home
Louie Louie, oh no
Me gotta go
Aye-yi-yi-yi, I said
Louie Louie, oh baby
Me gotta go
Three nights and days I sail the sea
Think of girl, constantly
On that ship, I dream she's there
I smell the rose in her hair.
Louie Louie, oh no
Me gotta go
Aye-yi-yi-yi, I said
Louie Louie, oh baby
Me gotta go
Okay, let's give it to 'em, right now!
See Jamaica, the moon above
It won't be long, me see me love
Take her in my arms again
Tell her I'll never leave again
Louie Louie, oh no
Me gotta go
Aye-yi-yi-yi, I said
Louie Louie, oh baby
Me gotta go
Let's take it on outta here now
Let's go!!

I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
I don't have a problem with that song or the David Gray song "Sail Away."

I found this song that I used in my cruise video from last season and I liked it for this:

The second song works great too. Good song to think about for cruising.

There are a lot of good songs out there. Then sometimes I go Old School and break out the shanties. My wife can't stand them. LOL.

David Gray ... Love it!
Indigo Girls, Closer to Fine ... "I sailed my ship of safety till I sank it. I'm crawling on your shores." Love it!

Okay... I'm going to get flamed but I'm not a fan of Southern Cross either.
Southern Cross was written as he sailed south from Hawaii to Tahiti on his own sailboat. It was an old, traditional gaff rigged Baltic trader, not some fancy rich man's yacht, that he filled up with friends and went sailing. Long before GPS, chartplotters, and AIS, too. Perhaps that might give the song more meaning for you.
Crosby has a beautiful sailing vessel called Mayan. https://medium.com/schoonermayan/mayans-history-the-david-crosby-years-517d8c0cb389. Always loved that boat!
