Ranger 12 - rescue

Hello all, wanted to say hi. new to the forums. I am in the process of bringing back to life an old Ranger R-12 that has been left... I see a lot of work ahead. but will hopefully have her ready to sail again by next summer. Looking forward to the wisdom from those on this forum who have been down this road before me.

Sails, mast all seem in good condition as they had been stored in a garage. The scuppered gunwales are not salvageable. they are too far gone and rotting way. Once I get it back to my garage in the next day or two will start to go over the boat and start to make a long list. at least once small hole in the fiberglass above the waterline along with a lot of cleanup.

Well she has made it back to my garage. I’m waiting for a small dolly to arrive so I can move her around easier. she’s going to need a lot of love.

1. Fiberglass repair
2. Gunwale replacement
3. Center board repair
4. Tiller handle non existent
5. Oars non existent
6. Rotten top of the transom
7. No traveller

mast and boom seem ok at a glance. I’m sure that’s is more I’ll find.

So that is faux planking? No judgement. It’s like the Montgomery’s. The fiberglass looking planks should be a lot easier to clean up than replacing boards.
I’m not really giving instruction but I’d be inclined to document the gunwale and inwale details and then start fresh with new wood. Maybe one side at a time. That may involve steaming. Small boats have more severe curves than larger vessels. You may want to brace the boat athwartship to maintain the lines while the trim is off the boat.
It’s just good fun and involves some time in the thinking chair with a beverage!

I can't see all the areas of concern in the photos but the knee on the stern(?) is toast. Again you need to stabilize that shape with twarts while you replace it. Doing the bevels and angles could be challenging. Time to spend in the thinking chair. Go with replacement not repair.

Port side knee is trashed, starboard side is not as trashed. Maybe clean enough for a template… the wood sandwiched in the transom is rotted for sure. Just don’t know how far down.

the port side inwale is not horrible. Maybe clean enough to use as a template. There will be plenty of chair and beverage moments.

I once did a rebuild of an International 14 that was in about the same shape. It was a lot of fun with my12 y/o son. We later did a camping trip in the Gulf Islands with it.

Found these tucked away in the sail bag. Seems like the owner was going to make some repairs in 1998 and didn’t get around to is. Original packaging from Ranger Boat too.
