thanks for the advice sailme88. The boat is not in the process of being winterized. What you see is the remnants of years past- 6-8 years. After owners passing I assume that the cover was removed and they listed boat for sale with broker. The engine is seized. Has been for undetermined amount of time.

WOW! What a difference a day makes! TomJ I can't thank you enough for your recommendation of Continental Marine and the great Paul Griffith of Quincy, MA. I just got off the phone. He answered it! Was a regular guy with a positive attitude, took the time to listen and explain some of the procedure involved in lifting and hauling the boat. Simplified things in a confident no big deal, that's what we do way. His only concern was how long the mast was because it would need a follow car if over 45 feet long. He will google for the mast length, check on a few things, get his snow plow equipment rigged up, and get back to me today. He also has a guy that runs from up yonder to down here in Florida that he will contact about bringing it here. In the meantime he has a storage lot to store the boat in Quincy. Problem solved-almost. There of course is the fee. Great people on this forum, a family I didn't know existed, LOL. Life is good! thanks again TOMJ!!!!!

@sailormanbigd sailboat data.com says the "I" dimension is 36.7'. that's from the cabin top to top of the mast. Even if the mast is keel stepped I'm sure it isn't 8 feet from the mast step to the cabin top so you should be fine.
I'm really glad you found a solution, the boat looks great and I'm sure will bring you lots of enjoyment.

Hello Sailorman....our homeport is Ipswich Ma. I would contact Andrew at Greenspoint Boatyard in Ipswich.
From the picture, it looks like your boat is located out onThe Neck. Greenspoint is not far from that location.
They can move your boat to the yard, shrink wrap it if you wish, do any mechanical work needed and launch you in the Spring. They are a full service top notch yard.

That all sounds good if it works out with Paul Griffith, but what if the price tag from him is a little too steep for you? I've never known a New Englander whom doesn't extract a pound of flesh when the opportunity arises! (Just kidding, sort of). But seriously, when was the last time you got an economic break from anybody in the "yachting" field of enterprise.

Something sounds very odd about the situation. Why is there such a panic from the Seller to have your boat removed in December? Apparently, it's been sitting in that same spot for 6 years or so? Now, they have your money and threaten to keep your money and retain possession if you can't take immediate possession? What does your contract say about that? If you are dealing with a rational person, you should be able to come to a rational solution. Perhaps if you offered some money to allow it to be stored where it is over the winter, you can make an agreement that is less costly to you and provides some assurance to the Seller. It's hard to believe that there was such great expectation that the boat would be removed immediately, in December. It's a 40 year-old New England boat. If it's survived 40 New England winters, I would not be that concerned about it surviving another. It will be much easier for you to make a plan for dealing with this in the spring.

Art12050 that is the Andy she has mentioned that has hauled boat in the past, drilled drain hole in hull, and pulled 1 injector and MM oiled the cylinder. Was told by widow, lot is packed full?
Scott tbird- that was my hope and wish when I bought it online site unseen-to keep it there for the several months before spring launch. But, it clearly states that boats must be moved within 7 days of auction end. Itsdonated, the charity that listed the boat said they are usually not real strict regarding removal of boat, but we have a widow that is anxious to have it gone. End of story.

left voice message for Andrew. Have also left voice messages for three different marine storage facilities in or around Green Cove Springs, FL for dry storage availability and costs. No particular reason for choosing that location except it is only a 4 hour drive from me and has a reputation of being reasonable prices. Any suggestions for decent storage facilities in North Florida, or southern Georgia, and even south Carolina? My idea is a low cost storage yard less than around 500 miles from me where i can ship the boat but still drive to check it out and work on it. I think dry storage around me are in the neighborhood of $200-300 a month. In Tarpon springs it like $30 a day! thats a grand a month in the work yard. And besides its a little shorter long haul distance from MA

Have you offered to pay her rent to store the boat on her property?

I'd say take a few hours off of work in the middle of the day and start calling companies like crazy. Keep a log of when you called, who you talked to, left a message, etc. This shows intent to move should they get stern with you again. A few hours off of work to get your dream boat sounds very worthwhile

EDIT: Glad to hear you found a transportation company! It's probably cheapest in the long run to move it to your desired location (if possible) instead of moving it twice

I'm glad to hear that Paul can help you out! He always went out of his way to help me and my Dad every year when we had to have our O'Day 23 moved for winter storage. He is a professional in every way, and will do all he can to help. He is also a member in my yacht club in Quincy.
Concerning storing your boat in Tarpon Springs, I wasn't thinking of putting her up in a recreational marina or yard ($$$!). The yards I would consider are for working boats, such as fishermen or salvagers (not many sponge boats left). I worked with my brother in law on his 65' work boat, and he always parked it and had it hauled at a couple of yards there, and, being a working boat captain/owner, he was very concerned about costs. I haven't been to Tarpon Springs in over ten years, so I don't know if things have changed. I can contact him for more info if you need me to. I did see a fair amount of long distance cruisers put up in those yards for repairs and maintenance.

Ha ha dj, don't I wish! At my house! Being a tru sailor I already have an 18ft bowrider and a 22ft centerboard Starwind at the house. Lucky they allow it in the city. But that makes me think about a fenced in open storage lot just down the road from me where people stor all kinds of treasures. RV's, boats, trucks, etc. I might consider that but then would have to hire a lowboy trailer guy again to take it to marina for launching. Hmm, very worth considering.
TomJ, I no a man who hauled in Tarpon 6 years ago, a workmans lot no doubt. He just wanted to paint the hull after some minor glass repair. He paid $30 a day. What he intended to be complete in 2 weeks took over 6 months to complete, and over $6000 in cost. Now it was a trimaran of 30ft but still, bleeding money. The idea I was told as to why so much money was to give incentive to get it done fast and get out. Still waiting to hear back from Paul regarding the move and the butchers bill. its 1530ET

Yes, that would be the same Andrew the seller mentioned. I’ve sent you a PM.
As someone mentioned, we’re in the middle of a significant snowstorm so this will be screwed up for a few days. Greenspoint is the nearest yard to where the boat is located, about 5 mi overland. The next closest yards are up in Newburyport.
All the yards are very quiet this time of year as all the recreational boats have been hauled for a while now, so I can see why it’s been difficult to contact anyone.

Well, I got the butchers bill. So, for your information here goes. Paul with Continental-nice guy said $1050 for pickup and haul of boat to Quincy. Add $250 for a helper or 2 to carry and load mast onto trailer, add $100 for helper/s to load boat gear inside boat cabin. Storage fee in Quincy $200 a month if mast can store on top of boat? $250 if has to be stored along side of boat. Its just a bit more than I was hoping but all seams within reason. What say the hoard?
He will be able to haul it Wed, Thur, or Fri ,but has to be no snow on the ground, or at least not piled up next to the road from snow plows.

These prices do seem reasonable, especially if you wish to protect your investment and the price of the boat was a good deal to begin with.
Hopefully, the snow won't be a big deal. I know the South Shore just got rain from the recent storm, but I'm not sure about Ipswich. Temps this week look to be in the high 30's daytime and 20's at night.
I hope this works out for you. I' m currently at home here in Hawaii, or I'd offer to be on site to give Paul a hand.

A few thoughts coming from a northern sailor:
  • It sounds like the boat was winterized some years ago. Maybe not all that well given the PO had some dementia and the engine is seized. Probably not much you can do about that for now but something to consider when you go to comission the boat. Check through hull fittings, plumbing, strainer... anything that may have water in it
  • The picture shows a very sturdy looking cover support that is placed on the ground. The normal cover supports (at least around here) are just set on deck. The one in the picture looks more robust and very worth reusing if you are going to cover the boat but looks very heavy. Try to get it moved with the boat.
  • The jack stands are no use to the widow and should also be moved with the boat. It may reduce your storage cost to bring your own jack stands, at least worth asking the question.
  • Did you ask the widow if there is a cover with the boat? If you are planning on covering the boat, you need either the cover that was on the boat or a tarp. The cheap blue tarps are better than nothing but only last one winter. That would probably work for you since you want to get the boat south next year anyway.
  • A cover is not absolutely essential but you need to make sure water cannot get in anywhere it would do damage when it freezes. There will be several thaw/freeze cycles between now and spring.
  • Storing the mast on the boat is handy, easier for getting the mast to the crane in the spring, but only if you are going to launch at Quincy in the spring and also if you have proper supports for the mast. Otherwise, just store it off the boat.
Boats tend to be more expensive to maintain properly than to purchase, especially older cheap boats. It sounds like you have found a good deal to get you out of the current situation. You mentioned this is your dream boat so all of this should be worth it in the long run. I recently went through a large, unexpected, repair on my boat that I bought just a year ago but now that it's done I really believe it was worth it. I hope you feel that way when you finally get this boat to her new home.

Thanks to you all, again and again! The price I paid for the boat was $1300 on ebay with no fees or add on. I put my max bid at $3700. So I do think there is still a great value there. What can't be valued or measured is how unique the boat is. Only 24 ever built, a big 30 footer, 6'3" cabin height, I'm 6'4". 10.3 beam, wide enough to not feel so cramped inside, includes most items I had on my wish list: 30-38 foot, around 4 foot or less draft, wider than 9 ft beam, anchor windlass, dinghy davits, auto pilot, chart plotter, wheel steering (for my girlfriend mostly), min amount of exterior wood (well not too much), and make my heart flutter and my eyes smile! Thought I was going to loose her! Thanks again for all your comments and advice. I have previously looked at quite a few boats that just don't do it for me, Pearson Triton 28-too small, Alberg 30-too small, but mostly look alike! Most all production boats look alike to me. Little diff here and there, but? My attention has always been caught by oddities like Compact 16, or the Freedom catboats, even the Westerlies Centaur's and the like. Different, workman like boats. So, you might can see my attraction to the rare Legnos Mystic 30. In the pics someone pointed out the bow looks like a blue whale! After that comment I see it too. I just want to wrap my arm around the bow and give it a hug!

Congratulations for getting everything worked out.

I just flew into Boston yesterday and am now home in Northern New Hampshire, after having to stay the night in Mass because of the storm. The next day, today, was much better and I'm sure all the snow from the storm is gone down there by now. Only a couple of inches that turned to rain.

About six inches here at my house. I use a blue Walmart tarp on my boat and it is good for several Winters, so long as it is tied down well and kept tight. Flapping in the wind and sagging under rain and/or snow will kill them. Otherwise, a very cost effective solution. Also, pad the sharp edges, turnbuckle, mast ends, etc.

Good luck and keep us posted.

-Will (Dragonfly)
