So, let's try this again: WHY is it a PITA to not be able to go 360 when you could just as well do back-and-forth 180s?
Because not being able to stand over a winch and swing it 360 actually IS a PITA?? ;^)

the real issue might even be who makes and installs dodgers without room to crank the winch around.

I made my own dodger and the mounting I could muster just could not allow 360 rotation unless a shorter handle is used. No problem to do 360 that way. B323

ron, we have catalina 30's, and i've seen many with dodgers well made enough to allow complete freedom to use the cabin top winch.

The weight of a sail can very greatly, depending on the weight of the dacron cloth or its construction. Our laminate race main weighs about one half what our Dacron does.

Also, a track system has MUCH less resistance than slugs.

Full battens much more resistance than partial.

So no easy blanket comparison.

Wait till your boat is 30 years old. does yours have simple nylon slides?
Ummmm.......not the headsail. My POINT was maybe, just maybe an 8" winch handle might not hit his ill designed dodger. Is this cat fight over yet?? :). Just trying to help...but I guess not.

This post from OP is about the Mainsail.

Jack, good one! :) Oh, you youngsters! :yikes::confused::clap::clap::clap:

morty, we have what I consider a VERY GOOD, well made dodger. It is low, so I can see over it. It has nothing to do with the dodger, it has EVERYTHING to do with where the winches were placed by the builder.

stu, like almost always we basically agree, but i guess catalina did the winch placement before even considering a dodger, so those who want a dodger are limited by catalina's design. in eleven years, until now, i didn't know this was an issue since my winch/dodger combination works just fine, and if it ain't broke.......

Fixed that for you. Unless a dodger is a factory option, this is normally the case.

I hear this all the time.
Could you please explain why you think you need to do this? Is it not a two speed ratcheting winch?
Even on my jib sheets, unless we're racing, I don't bother to go 360.
Stu, the reason it's a PITA by not rotating the winch handle the full 360 degrees is because you are going from high gear to low gear as you reverse directions with the handle. (Assuming this is a two speed winch). I can't imagine using this method to bring in a fully loaded genoa, racing or not. It's a difficult and slow method unless there are really light winds which I don't believe you get too often in San Francisco. Your method would work better with a one speed winch. You could also use a ratcheting winch handle in conjunction with a two speed winch. You'll be limited to one gear ratio until you switched the direction of the ratchet on the winch handle.

ted, i have no idea how your c&c is rigged, but here we are talking about a catalina 30 whose cabin top winches control only the main and jib halyards: nothing to do about jib sheets.

Mortyd, I was responding to Stu's comment, hence the quote. This thread is a bit intertwined with a few related topics. My comments are also relevant to the original topic.

I also have a ratchet handle that I bought in 1080. It has the same palls as a winch
Flick the lever and you can ratchet in either direction.

I use a Milwaukee right-angle drill.
It's a little awkward for trimming the sheets, but great for the halyards and rolling in the furler.
