Because not being able to stand over a winch and swing it 360 actually IS a PITA?? ;^)So, let's try this again: WHY is it a PITA to not be able to go 360 when you could just as well do back-and-forth 180s?
It is the point. I have same rig. You cannot raise it with a small winch.Alrighty then. Wasnt aware he had a TR. Besides, not really the point.
Interesting......because I can raise my 385 headsail with that very same winch handle. It is the point. I have same rig. You cannot raise it with a small winch.
Wait till your boat is 30 years old. does yours have simple nylon slides?Interesting......because I can raise my 385 headsail with that very same winch handle.
Ummmm.......not the headsail. My POINT was maybe, just maybe an 8" winch handle might not hit his ill designed dodger. Is this cat fight over yet??Wait till your boat is 30 years old. does yours have simple nylon slides?
This post from OP is about the Mainsail.U

Jack, good one!ron, we have catalina 30's, and i've seen many with dodgers well made enough to allow complete freedom to use the cabin top winch.
Fixed that for you. Unless a dodger is a factory option, this is normally the case.stu, like almost always we basically agree, but i guess catalina did the winch placement WITHOUT considering a dodger, so those who want a dodger are limited by catalina's design. in eleven years, until now, i didn't know this was an issue since my winch/dodger combination works just fine, and if it ain't broke.......
Stu, the reason it's a PITA by not rotating the winch handle the full 360 degrees is because you are going from high gear to low gear as you reverse directions with the handle. (Assuming this is a two speed winch). I can't imagine using this method to bring in a fully loaded genoa, racing or not. It's a difficult and slow method unless there are really light winds which I don't believe you get too often in San Francisco. Your method would work better with a one speed winch. You could also use a ratcheting winch handle in conjunction with a two speed winch. You'll be limited to one gear ratio until you switched the direction of the ratchet on the winch handle.I hear this all the time.
Could you please explain why you think you need to do this? Is it not a two speed ratcheting winch?
Even on my jib sheets, unless we're racing, I don't bother to go 360.
