Why isnt it?... you are required to have an approved sound producing device at hand..
Could it be possible that you may not fully know the rules, how to use them, and why they are so specific?...
And yes, you may know the rules, but if you feel you have the right to ignore a couple of them and not have a sound producing device available, or readily give way when required, maybe you should give grace to the other boater for ignoring the rules he doesnt like![]()
I can think of about a million reasons why this is a silly idea, but if they ever did this, I can guarantee that the biggest violator will be the USCG and the local water patrol. One of the few arguments that we have on our boat is "Do we accept that the approaching boat understands the rules of the road?" .I always argue that one is obliged to stand on when on the starboard tack even though the other boat seems intent on suicide. Nevertheless I do sweat and I was wondering now that LEDs are cheap and can be easily configured that lights be attached to the boat so that proposed turn to the right would be shown by led lights on the port side flashing red. Or would this be too tacky(sorry).
never have i but they are armed and dangerous ....in the little town i came from the firemen are armed and i ask one.... one day why he needed a side arm.....is reply was to shoot out the fire...go figureYou ever see a cop use a turn signal? I haven't. Ever

it's the posttraumatic Hurricane Hugo Syndrome...he has a lot of flashbacks intermittently.......Something's wrong with you ... how do you come up with this sh!t?? LOL
Is it possible to show where that exemtion it stated?... I have searched it and all I can find is that some STATES dont require a sound producing on NON-mororized vessels in their inland waters, but if the sailboat is EQUIPPED with a motor, a sound producing device is required.Under the Rules, if you are SAILING with no engine running, you are not required to have a whistle (aka horn). Sailing vessels do not make sound signals. The Rules were written back in the days of steam power, and the whistle was powered by that steam. No engine, no steam, no whistle. If your engine is running, then you must have a horn. Archaic and dumb, but that is the rule.
Also under the Inland Rules, when a power driven vessel makes a sound signal, it must be acknowledged or rejected by the other vessel. Same signal repeated back or the Danger Signal, five or more short blasts.
Honestly, I have no idea. It's more of a curse than a gift. I wish I could turn it off. I even have weird dreams.Something's wrong with you ... how do you come up with this sh!t??
At least there's a handy source for it and other hard to find itemsOne more maintenance item, blinker fluid.
