Why isnt it?... you are required to have an approved sound producing device at hand..

Could it be possible that you may not fully know the rules, how to use them, and why they are so specific?...

And yes, you may know the rules, but if you feel you have the right to ignore a couple of them and not have a sound producing device available, or readily give way when required, maybe you should give grace to the other boater for ignoring the rules he doesnt like:biggrin:

Under the Rules, if you are SAILING with no engine running, you are not required to have a whistle (aka horn). Sailing vessels do not make sound signals. The Rules were written back in the days of steam power, and the whistle was powered by that steam. No engine, no steam, no whistle. If your engine is running, then you must have a horn. Archaic and dumb, but that is the rule.
Also under the Inland Rules, when a power driven vessel makes a sound signal, it must be acknowledged or rejected by the other vessel. Same signal repeated back or the Danger Signal, five or more short blasts.

One of the few arguments that we have on our boat is "Do we accept that the approaching boat understands the rules of the road?" .I always argue that one is obliged to stand on when on the starboard tack even though the other boat seems intent on suicide. Nevertheless I do sweat and I was wondering now that LEDs are cheap and can be easily configured that lights be attached to the boat so that proposed turn to the right would be shown by led lights on the port side flashing red. Or would this be too tacky(sorry).
I can think of about a million reasons why this is a silly idea, but if they ever did this, I can guarantee that the biggest violator will be the USCG and the local water patrol.

You ever see a cop use a turn signal? I haven't. Ever.

Is it possible to show where that exemtion it stated?... I have searched it and all I can find is that some STATES dont require a sound producing on NON-mororized vessels in their inland waters, but if the sailboat is EQUIPPED with a motor, a sound producing device is required.
The laws I see written for coastal waters require a sound producing device on ALL vessels...
In some states, such as oregon, a sound producing device is required on ALL floating craft, that has been designed to carry a person, in all waters..... single inner tubes are exempt except when two or more are tied together (rafted) and used for carrying people....

Yup.. Louisiana classifies a sailboat with an engine, outboard or inboard, as a motorboat and requires a sound signal. Makes no difference whether the engine is running.

Something's wrong with you ... how do you come up with this sh!t??
Honestly, I have no idea. It's more of a curse than a gift. I wish I could turn it off. I even have weird dreams.

So, in conformity to SBO reg. 6.1(b), I'll where no comment is necessary or wanted. I've posted before that I aspire to get a horn that is so loud that the pilot of the Cross Sound Ferry will come running out of the wheelhouse shouting "WHAT THE F**K was THAT?! "
I did have a situation in local waters at night when I was waiting for a motoring sailboat to yield to our boat which was sailing. It never happened. I crash tacked when I realized there was no one in the cockpit and everyone was below listening to music and drinking. The other boat never knew we were there. Based on that incident and others I think it's best to control your own destiny and act proactively.

Right you are Andrew! I lean out of the cockpit and start tooting Assembly with this natty little unit and by-golly people start looking around to see what the devil is going on. That is when I point the direction in which they need to turn. Works like a charm.

Been a long, cold winter in Minnesota, eh?

I simply have the Admiral go up to the bow and give bicycling hand signals, don't need LEDs for turn signals.
