One of the few arguments that we have on our boat is "Do we accept that the approaching boat understands the rules of the road?" .I always argue that one is obliged to stand on when on the starboard tack even though the other boat seems intent on suicide. Nevertheless I do sweat and I was wondering now that LEDs are cheap and can be easily configured that lights be attached to the boat so that proposed turn to the right would be shown by led lights on the port side flashing red. Or would this be too tacky(sorry).

i sorta think it's uncalled for ...next they will want to install brake lights....just call them on the radio and ask what there intentions are

If they don't see your vessel they likely wont see your leds.
One loud blast-port to port.
Two loud blast-starboard to starboard.
If you have to sound a warning the stand down skipper waited too long to make his intentions known. :deadhorse:

This is not a case of being seen its more that there is a lack of ability as it currently stands to make your intentions clear. Sounding a horn has been suggested, but lets face its not a readily available item

Is this thread an attempt at giving more purpose to distilled consumables?
I don't wish to minimize Mr. Hudson's concerns. I know those fishing pangas concern me when I'm transiting the harbor alley in MX.
I guess I just need a bigger boat. ;)

No to the bigger boat. Sanding the bottom of this one in prep for the new barrier coat is quite enough of a pita, thank you very much.
We now return you from this thread hijinx.

It is on my boat- an air powered horn lives in the cockpit ALWAYS.

You are not obliged to "stand on" especially when you have a boat on a collision course. Yes. get on the radio and ask his intentions and if no answer turn and grant him the right of way. There is very little that you could teach someone else in a passing situation and he is bound to have an incident and I would just make sure that it is not with me.

Why isnt it?... you are required to have an approved sound producing device at hand..

Could it be possible that you may not fully know the rules, how to use them, and why they are so specific?...

And yes, you may know the rules, but if you feel you have the right to ignore a couple of them and not have a sound producing device available, or readily give way when required, maybe you should give grace to the other boater for ignoring the rules he doesnt like:biggrin:

Assume nothing.
Show your intention.
Air horn and VHF in the cockpit.
Avoid collision.
