What exactly is a daggerboard? My keel drops down when I release the cleated line inside the cabin.
There are basically three types of fins that keep the boat from slipping sideways through the water, ie a keel, a centerboard, and a daggerboard. A keel is weighted and usually rigidly mounted except for trailerable sailboats which is kind of a hybrid in that it's weighted but also swings up. A centerboard is unweighted and swings or pivots up and down. A daggerboard is also unweighted and slides straight up and down. The Mac 26 boats all have either a centerboard or a daggerboard.

In the picture the first boat has a full keel, the second has a fin keel, the third has a centerboard, and the last has a daggerboard.

Make that 4 types. I forgot to mention the "leeboard." Leeboards are a lot less common but do show up from time to time, mostly on small boats. A leeboard is basically either a centerboard or daggerboard that is attached to the side of the boat rather than in a trunk in the center.

After our overnighter a couple weeks ago I decided to try something different on the sleeping arrangements that didn't require taking down the table, adding the various boards, filling the air mattress, making the bed, etc. The V berth was just too confining the way it was, but I saw a light at the end of the tunnel..., and then it hit me.
by removing the v berth/head wall and creating a full width one out of 1/2" plywood, plus a couple support braces to support the aft end, about 32" can be added to the V berth area.

I attached it to the fiberglass with a piano hinge so it can be raised and latched to access the head (very rarely used onboard) and storage etc.

Jennifer picked up a new looking duvet cover for $4.00 at goodwill (her favorite store) and sewed up a nice slip cover for the new one piece 3" foam pad out of it.

The existing shelve units were modified and shuffled around, and walla… a bedroom with an "almost queen" size bed that doesn't require assembly every time you want to use it.

Nice mod! The biggest reason I opted for a Mac26 vs a 25 was for the berth in the rear. My forward berth is stuffed with sails. The Mrs also likes the idea of an easily accessible head, so I'm not permitted to change it's current configuration.

Update on Mistress: The incident with the CB may have been a saving grace. After inspecting it, I found that it was split along the back side halfway up. I ordered a new one complete with brackets and uphaul. Better safe than sorry.

I dropped the CB today. It looked like a daunting task, but was relatively straightforward.
The biggest problem was breaking a 9/16 open end to the correct length so it would fit through the hole in the hull and engage the nut. The bracket on the Starboard side was loose and may have fallen out in the future.

The hardware appears to be in good condition, but will be replaced with new items.

This is how the CB uphaul was installed. A single line wrapped twice around the CB.

I have no idea how this set-up worked. It wasn't securely fastened to the CB.

Now a question for some more experienced Mac guys - Do you have the measurements for the hole in the CB that the uphaul attaches to (hole diameter, distance from the trailing edge, distance form the top of the CB) and what exactly does the uphaul attach to?

The damage to the CB was significant. The lower leading edge was flattened by scraping along the boat ramp, and it was delaminated. The cut is what I did to get it from under the axle.

The trailing edge of the CB was delaminated halfway up the length of the board. IMO- this would have been a structural failure waiting to happen. I would have never seen this issue if the problem hadn't occurred.

As luck would have it, I guess that pissing Neptune off by christening Mistress with Budweiser had a good side effect.

Bought a boom vang. I've never used one before.
I installed a vang & backstay tensioner recently too.
Semper fi, bro

Today I picked up a few odds & ends for a topping lift & a signal line. Nothing spectacular, got the block hung on the starboard spreader & a shroud cleat put on.

I made a tray and moved my battery up next to the keel.

Figured having the weight closer to the CG couldn't hurt.

....The lake was so low that I had to drive the truck off of the end of the ramp to get enough water under the keel to float her. Then the drama started...
She would go forward on the trailer, but wouldn't back off. She was stuck on the trailer....I checked the tie downs (all cast off); I checked the centerboard line (still taut and apparently fully pulled up). No ideas, so I pulled her back out of the water and found the problem. The centerboard had dropped down and was now wedged between the boat ramp and the axle and cross arm of the trailer.....Needless to say, Mistress's centerboard is now ~12" shorter since I had to cut it to get it unjammed.
Had the same problem once on a ramp in Canada but was able to get the boat back forward and the CB up. To avoid the problem ever again...

... I added a couple boards under that area when I added the second axle with brakes and a third bunk to the trailer...

So far haven't needed it. On the road trailering, if I remember, I release the CB line and...

http://purplesagetradingpost.com/sumner/macgregor/trailer-mods-1.html

.... let the CB rest on the support roller on the trailer. The reason it jammed in Canada is I had forgotten to tighten the line before sliding the boat off the trailer into the water and the CB dropped before clearing the trailer,

MM, if that old CB is going to the trash.. maybe.. pull it apart and take some pictures of whats inside and how the inside held up over the last 25 years or so. I "heard" there are wood stringers inside the CB, if so.. are they still in reasonable shape?

made it a little further on my deck repair. you can see the last few repairs i had to make, they just need to be sanded, then the whole area faired and sanded before priming:

and I formed this little foot for a block I got for the daggerbaord line... originally the line just went over the edge of the trunk and had cut a deep groove into the glass. i will be very happy with this new setup:

There is a hardwood stringer ( 1-1/4" x 2") that appears to run the length of the CB. That thing was a bear to cut through with a sabre saw with a roughcut blade. My presumption is that it was well impregnated with resin during the lay-up process. I couldn't gouge the wood with the screwdriver.
The interior of the CB is pretty rough, but appears solid enough. As light in weight as it is, the CB appears to be stoutly built.

The new CB came in yesterday. It has a V-notch in the trailing edge and hole drilled intol the side for the attachment of the up haul line, which this "original" one doesn't have. That 1" hole intrudes into the inner cavities though. I'm wondering if I should seal it or merely let water collect in the spaces inside the CB. I'm not worried about freezing in Central Texas.

As a thought, I've been considering adding ~ 5lbs of lead shot to the bottom interior of the CB in a resin/lead slurry; just to add a bit of weight which may help the CB go down and possibly provide a bit extra righting moment. Any thoughts?

Sumner - I've had a similar idea for my trailer, but without the roller. What type of material did you use? I was thinking of the composite plastic decking sold in home improvement stores.

Mistress, I wouldn't not plug the hole because trapping air in the centerboard will hold it up when you try to drop it. Is there a hole lower on the centerboard where water can escape while the boat is on the trailer?

Are you talking about the planking? If so it is cedar fence boards that they sell here cheap at the lumberyard. I've made fencing out of it without staining and it holds up here for years and also have made a lot of ....

... interior storage pieces out of it. Not sure how it holds up in other parts of the country. Another alternative might be what you are talking about and ....

... what I used for the boarding ladder on the boat. More expensive but would probably last forever,
