Today with the boat in the backyard, I took out all the flooring that I had put in maybe 7 years ago. I used the hardware store fake vinyl hardwood floor looking - sticky back stuff.

When I put this in.. I thought it was real slick. After all these years, dirt had accumulated in the cracks/around the edges and in the last couple years, the flooring pieces would actually start "sliding" on warm days. Tore it all out today.. these had accumulated years of sand, and water and what else got spilled on the floor since they were hard clean.. Pretty nasty, I legally should probably get a hazardous waste permit to throw them out.

So now I have to figure something else to put on the floor. I liked the hardwood floor look but am hoping for something that can be removed to clean all the crap that ends up on a sailboat floor. Needs to be durable, dark color and removable for cleaning, not very thick as this degrades cabin height plus light weight.. I sort of like the idea of just the bare floor for cleaning/ durability/ weight but dont want to look at bight white gelcoat.

Walt. A couple boats back I had some marine grade carpet sewed into "floor mats" with edging all around. thin, soft on the feet, and easy to take out to dry or wash as needed. I "have a guy" locally, from when I was building street rods, that does great work and I'm sure most areas have auto upholstery guys that would do it for you.

I bought a 5x8 throw rug for $20 at Walmart and cut it to fit. Then secured it with some peel-and-stick Velcro. The sides extend up under the settees making it look and feel quite comfortable. Being secured with Velcro makes it easy to remove for cleaning.

I've been considering something like this: http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?path=-1|2276179|2276198|2276200&id=1061229

Inexpensive, east to lay, and just as easy to take back up when it's time to clean,

I spent about thirty bucks at Lowes and bought the grey commercial grade carpet runner( they have bulk rolls). It looks great, it is rated for outdoor use and is just wide enough to cut the cockpit floor and the inside of the cabin from one piece including under the table. It has rubber non slip backing and stays put. I will try to find or take some pics this weekend. Hope my two cents worth helps you out, happy sailing!! DAVE

After our test sail last week I had requests from the Admiral for a towel holder and condiment shelf, so today I granted her wishes. mostly just more Western Red Cedar from the local lumber yard. nothing fancy, but the finished items should prove quite useful.

Walt,
Our salon floor is stained and we have given up trying to clean it up. We have decided to use the 12x12" square drain tiles that snap together. I have used these in the past on our cruiser and was very happy with the results. I may also put them in the cockpit as well. http://www.rubberflooringinc.com/interlocking-tile/rugged-grip-loc-tiles.html

How are these on bare feet???
No something you would not want to stand on barefoot for a long time, but really not that bad. We never had a complaint when we used them in our cruiser. They solve a lot of problems and are easy to care for.

TC, your planned trip sound great!!!

Lots of good ideas on the floor and I did one of the suggestions.. - it might be temporary. I just bought this stuff http://www.homedepot.com/p/TrafficM...c-Rib-Door-Mat-60-443-1902-30000500/202072107 and cut it into three pieces that covered most of the floor. I dont think I will try and have it stick at all. We have two dogs that now track a lot of sand down below so Im going to see how this works for being real easy to clean. If it doesn't work out.. it also only cost $18 at Home Depot.

I also just remodled the aft bed a little to make more room. I now have NOTHING at all on the wall next to my side of the bed so I have as much room as possible. The first picture is what the bed looks like now - and the new black carpet. FYI, this is a nice bed. I have a couple thin backpacking pads all the way on the bottom, then 3 inches of foam then 1.5 inch of memory foam in the original mattress bags. Very comfy and now I have more room side to side. Wife and I plus two dogs sleep back there.

The picture below shows some of crap I moved out of the bed sleeping space (DVD organizer, book shelf speakers blue bags). Picture below is the before shot (minus the memory foam pad).

The book shelf speakers are now mounted above the mattress. Moving them up like this changed the sound a little and Im still trying to decide if I like it better or not..

Boy Walt. I'm sure envious of all the sleeping room you have under the cockpit on your 26s, compared to our 25 (which basically has zero under there). I guess I'd never seen a 26 from that vantage point before.

My day turned out pretty good however, as I was able to sell our little Puffer this morning, which brings us down to only 3 sailboats now ;) Fed X showed up right after that with a brand new Doyle mainsail for the Mac and then 20 minutes later UPS brought me a new radio/CD player for it. I just love new toys :)

Just remember us folks up north when it is 120 degrees in the shade down there and 70 degrees up in the great white north.

It's still white at 70 degrees? I would never have imagined it. ;)

This time next year I hope to be moving to Minnesota. (Actually my wife is hoping for Minnesota. I'll just be happy to be out of California.)
