Impressive! Sometimes I think that what we do to restore these boats is more like a re manufacturing process.
Thanks for keeping us updated on your progress with all the pics.

When I get the vac hose adapter for my belt sander I am going to strip off the bottom paint, dewax the gel coat, fair it where needed, and put on a fresh barrier coat of Interlux Interprotect 2000. You'd be amazed at how much easier stuff is to get to get on the outside and the inside with the hull inverted. All the crap and dust that was stuck in various nooks and seams fell out on the inside so I could clean it all up. Also easier to get at some mold and paint a few things in the cabin while inverted.

what are you going to fare it with there seems to be a lot of opinions on that subject. My bottom has a lot of little bubbles. I do not plan to do it now but late in the fall maybe.

WEST 207 Low density fairing filler in epoxy resin. There are a ton of premixed products for fairing fillers on the market, but I have a gallon of WEST epoxy so I just buy the appropriate adhesive or fairing fillers as needed. I can see evidence of blisters and/or previous blister repairs on my hull as well. The key is using a wide flexible spatula/scraper to smear it on thin where needed and not have too much waste. Besides, after all the work of flipping the hull and belt sanding off the old bottom paint you don't want to spend days hand sanding off an over application of fairing filler. Its important to do this UNDER the new barrier coat application, not on top of it.
I make long flexible sanding boards with thin plywood or MDF. I just cut sanding belts and hot glue the belt end around each end of the board and screw on some small wood handles.

Never bring a Knife to a Gun fight... After two passes with 50 Grit

I picked up the pictured Makita Belt Sander off CL for $60 and ordered an extra 10 ft vacuum hose that fits it off Amazon. The dust control REALLY helps keep the mess to a bare minimum and out of your face, but I wore my mask anyway. This bottom paint is so thick and in several layers, this is for sure my least favorite job so far. After a few passes with 50 grit I switch to 80 grit on the belt sander, then finish up with 80 grit on my orbital. If I was only using the orbital it would take me a year to strip all this crap off! It gums up the belts pretty quick but it doesn't ruin the them, I just have to roll the belts over my finger than the big chunks pop off. Needless to say I switch between 5 belts frequently and then have to stop to clean them all off. Here is where I left off tonight (Sunday). I want to be painting by next weekend!

A little more than half way there...

Put in 4 hours this evening, starboard half done. I have a better way of keeping my belts clean from small boogers of bottom paint that gum them up, I keep a 10 inch stainless steel wire brush handy. I turn over the belt sander and give it a few pulses while brushing the belt, much faster than removing the belt and picking them all off!

I should get the port side done if I have the energy tomorrow (big inspection going on at work). Sanding the keel pocket will be a real PITA, needs to be done all by hand!

don't you just love getting presents like that??? I am also jealous of you being able to work inside! mine would be going a lot faster if I didn't have to play the weather so much

You are lucky to be inside with enough room to drop the keel, ive got some work cut out for me in the spring as my boat is on a trailer at a marina. Keep up the interesting work, i am awaiting the keel restoration.
