Sorry @Stu Jackson Les must be taking funny pills. The Red Green comment had me:laugh: so hard I fell to the floor.
Good luck man.

@jssailem - your right - took a pain pill last night - must be still effecting me -- but points to any non-Canadian who knows what Red River is.

I'm pleased to report, we haven't been boarded in over 20 seasons of sailing on the coast of Maine.

When we sailed on Lake Champlain in Vermont, we were boarded often. Once, twice in one day! Nobody minds a seasonal safety check but it was so bad, we'd run to the nearest local, state or fed ship and get inspected and hopefully a sticker to prove it.

We were once drug searched way off Charleston SC by the CG. I think our small boat, 28', and the Vermont registration may have precipitated the search. We were under sail and it took a while. I think the fact that a sea was running and a few of the young guys started getting green below, had them realize we weren't narco's. :) They were happy to get off.

The last boarding was sailing out of Maine, but in front of the Cape Cod Canal by Mass CG. I was alone onboard. They were nice kids and did a routine safety check. I got my first written warning, outdated flares.

I replaced them next season,...I think. :)

I keep outdated flares in addition to the current ones. I’ve always bought SOLAS rated ones (expensive) because the standard CG approved versions are inadequate, imho. This winter I bought one of those Weems & Plath electronic flares because I’m done wasting money on something I don’t use. I’ve owned boats since 1979, never used a flare except for practicing. Pyrotechnic flares would be a last resort for “locate” only after using electronic devices (multiple VHFs aboard, AIS alert, or if further out I have a PLB and EPIRB).

Flairs do seem a bit out dated.

Yes, and although the W&P electronic flasher probably wouldn’t attract the same attention as a pyrotechnic flare, it can be sustained longer and would do the “locate” function as well or better.

@Larry -- DH I like the layered approach to signaling your need. The flares while having been in service for decades, they are very recognizable to all.
What do you do with the out dated ones. I learned, during my last inspection, you don’t share them as part of your stash with the inspector.

@jssailem, I take expired flares to the fire station. They sometimes give me a funny look but they take them.

Give expired flares to your daughter, wife, best friends wife for their cars. It is truly amazing how many folks don't have flares in their cars.

Hehe! I think it might cause a small problem to use rocket or pistol flares instead of road flares.

And why do you specify females as potential recipients for expired flares? Current ones only for men? :)

When I had a flare gun (last boat) I kept the expired 10ga shells in a container marked “expired do not use”. You can do the same for handheld flairs and the CG won’t care because of the markings.

As to my bias to wemen in the post. I put 4 in my trunk before giving away to other who didn’t have them which so far have been women. I didn’t send any to my son as he currently carless by choice and I think it’s frowned on in international mail.

Here is another example of the "Boat Police" and what they do for us everyday..
Just like any occupation there are always ones that " exceed" their job description in their role in one form or another.
After 27 years as a city policeman I always worked hard to help people, but some were beyond help for one reason or another, there were cops who were lazy and also those that went above and beyond. Sometimes people did not understand what was happening and why, I always tried to help them understand but sometimes....
again there are others that do not have the patience, skills or time to do that just like in any occupation-Sorry for the rant.

Expired flares: keep them in my truck tool box to use as a torch in winter time to warm frozen airlines. More and more these are plastic now, kinda puts a crimp in that plan!
