I spent a weekend at Coldwater Lake with friends. Two of us awoke early and decided to go out waterskiing. We did not want to wake anyone else up to be our observer, there were no visible boats on the lake, so we went out without one. During my turn driving, I was watching my friend drop off the tow rope during a turn, when I noticed a young fish cop come out of the shadows along the shore. I slowed and the fish cop motored up alongside me. He told me he was going to cite me for not having an observer, while leaving my friend bob in the water 200 yards away. He then asked me for a pen or a pencil. After a thorough search of my swim trunks, I failed to produce a writing utensil. The fish cop seemed more frustrated than embarrassed that he could not write me up because he lacked the most basic of law enforcement tools.
Another day on the Detroit River we ended up just over on the Canadian side near Belle Isle. I was a passenger seated near the stern enjoying some Jim Beam mixed with Vernors in a plastic cup. Suddenly three OPP officers pulled up along side. The river was very choppy so they held about 4 feet away. Seeing the cup in my hand, one of the officers asked for it. I stood and reached the cup towards him. Somehow I lost my footing and grabbed for the rail to prevent going overboard. The cup ended up in the river. I reached down into the water and retrieved the cup and then dutifully handed it to the officer. He poured the river water out of the cup, shook his head and told us to head back to the American side.
I was never on a boat that was boarded nor unnecessarily harassed.
