will this work on a 260?

If it's the Panther, I just installed mine Tuesday of this week. Although I haven't tried it in the water, it seems to turn the outboard perfectly.

Oh, and thanks to weedstomper and one other (was it cephius(Dave)?) for encouraging me to get one! I bought mine from cabelas.com. Price was similar to what you found on amazon.

I bought mine "Panther Marine Steering Kit Stainless Steel PAN-552600" at JMS Online Marine Supply http://www.jmsonline.net/ for $68.96 including.
The price there is $58.03 plus $10.93 shipping, no taxes. Amazon charges now taxes too, just to let you know.
Haven't installed it yet, ordered yesterday, it is on its way by UPS Ground from Houston, TX.
It will be connected to a Honda 9.9 outboard engine.

Can someone describe how it attaches. Does it connect the motor to the rudder plate. Picture would be nice also. I made one that connects the aluminum rudder plate then has a bar that goes to the back of the motor where I drilled a small hole for the bar to attach. Worked after doing some modifications but still not perfect.

I saw a few pics but not real clear. I have wheel steering and it might not work that way. Let me know your thoughts if it would work.

OK here some pictures. I got my order yesterday delivered and installed the linkage today.
My outboard is a 9.9 hp Honda. As the first picture shows, the rod is strait, it did not need to be bend. The second picture shows where I attached one end to the rudder aluminium plate.

It is important to figure out the right spot where you drill, closer or further to the vertical rudder pivot post, to make sure the motor turns the full range as the rudder does but also that the motor not restrict the ruder from full turning. Closer to the pivot post give fewer movements to the rod further away more. Test the end spots in your particular case also that nothing interferes with the linkage when the motor is moved out of water.

I attached the other end of the rod on the motor's tiller base mount as the third and forth picture shows.
In the pictures is the motor's tiller flipped up and I drilled the attachment hole in the end of the tiller base. The tiller base is the fixed part where the arm is mounted to. This point seems to me a stable good place to be used. It works so well, that even when the motor is out of the water it turns freely with the rudder. No need to detach the linkage when sailing.

Looks good, do you have remote engine controls? If so did you use the edson pedestal controls? If not what did you use?

av8erdunn;
actually, that is a problem. I had a two stroke Mercury 8 hp with the Edson controls attached.
Replaced that engine with the 9.9 hp Honda. I have not found a way to get the controls connected to the Honda. So, the rudder linkage is a relieve to operate the outboard steering wise from the helm as long as speed and direction does not have to be changed.

That sucks! What year Honda is it? Mine is a 99 and I am having a hard time finding the parts to do the conversion. I heard that after 01 you can't convert it. Don't know if its true but that's what I heard. I have went to all of the Honda dealers locally and no one is even interested in helping me try to find the parts. Pisses me off!!

Regular Guy,

Great job on the installation, the write-up and the pictures. I didn't put rod quite as far forward as yours. I may ask the roadrunner to move it for me. ;-) I haven't been out since I installed mine. Looking forward to trying it!

It was around 2006 when you could no longer convert the Honda 9.9 due to change in the construction of the motor. Therefore, Regular Guy along with others will not be able to convert the engine controls to wheel steering.

I wonder if I can just get a parts diagram for a remotely operated 1999 honda and just order each piece individually since I'm not having any luck with my local honda shops in finding a kit. One guy basically told me it wasn't worth his time to do the research to find the kit for me. What ever happened to customer service?
