the usual as seen above. But, good cranked Tschaikovsky, Mussorgsky, Richard Stoltsman, and other good whole orchestral classical. Try it. Just don't get a long haired violin quartet. I have to admit, I play clarinet for a semi pro orchestra so I'm biased. Put it on a boat and crank it...

I must be the only sailor that dislikes Buffett. James Taylor too. I'd rather clean the head after a week of beans than...
I was just having that exact same thought, so clearly you're not the only one.

I've never understood the big attraction to Jimmy Buffett and James Taylor puts me to sleep.

Hey, nothing wrong with that - it's all personal preference.

Pleased to meetcha! :D

I don't have a single Buffett CD.
Get plenty of JB on the dock and at the yacht club.
My taste runs more to Beck, Coldplay, Flobots, Greenday, MGMT, Moby, Vampire Weekend, Wilco..... I pull out some old Joy Division, New Order, Clash and Waterboys now and then. Buena Vista Social Club, Nicole Conte and Nick Drake are great for quieter times on the dock.
Got the 17 CD Beatles box set for my birthday recently, so the fab four will definately be on board this year.

Typical Buffett on board. But nothing beats laying back in the dark with a bottle of red and some Dean Martin. We love the Rat Pack era. But there is also anything from Michael Buble to Molly Hatchet and Toby Kieth.

Some of these are really inspired choices, so I’ll need to add them to my list. I focus on smooth jazz (okay, jazz purists can line up and smack me one) like Boney James, Dave Koz, Richard Eliot, Candy Dulfer, Brian Bromberg and Kirk Whalum. Obviously, I prefer instrumentals to vocals.

And the list goes on and on………… J
How about some LRB, Hapa, The Waifs, Hans Zimmer, Styx, Blood, Sweat and Tears, The Band, The Dead, Three Dog Night....OK, I'll stop!!!!

Anything from classical to classic rock to world (Spanish, Irish, Italian) to sea shanties and almost anything in between is what you get on Anam Cara. The iPod has such a wide variety that we will adjust to the seas, wind, time of day and mood. I could never just pick one genre and stick with it. One thing you'll never hear on my boat is the pop that's out today and rap (maybe some old school hip-hop before it was all about gangbanging and slapping your woman around).... only because I don't like that style of music.

I can't tell you how many times I've said "someone take the wheel" and went below to change the playlist!

Aside from all of the great artists suggested by everyone, you may want to check out a lesser known group named, Sister Hazel. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f46u...ext=1&list=MLGxdCwVVULXcaP3mmUec4Aw89G1eApFkW

They are mostly what I would call acoustic rock - good boat music and a decent alternative when you are tired of Jimmy. Their song Sail Away is an original that you can hear on the first half of the video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OkUmxsn7VMo followed by the classic, Come Sail Away by Styx.

The Admiral is in charge of the tunes but our likes are almost alike.
Some oldies
Jimmy Buffett
Kenny Chesney
Bob Marle
Norah Jones
Celine Dion
Bonnie Raitt
Andrea Bocelli
Luciano Pavarotti
Andrea and Luciano is for those deep thinking stormy sailing days, arrival/ departure from the marina, rounding the committee boat, keeping the stink pots away at anchor and ensuring annoying friends of invited guests never return.

Just discovered Dave Brubeck ..and I now will wait for Further to play in San Diego because I loved what I heard when I looked them up..
So much music, so little time!
I grew up with brubeck.... Kids my age loved Elvis... me an my buddies dug the Dave Brubeck Quartet. Back in the day he was considered a "cross-over" in that he sold a lot of records and sold out college concerts wherever he performed in an era when most jazz musicians were commerically undesirable. Pop and Rock ruled the recording world. Although "Time Out" was his most commercially successful album.... the following concert vid shows the kind of swinging jazz that got them to the top.

Sax player Paul Desmond and drummer Joe Morello are legends in their own right.

here's another cut from one of the time albums... a little deeper mood

Wow- someone else digs Hapa! I see them every time they come to Annapolis. Modern Hawaiian, I'd say?

Around the Chesapeake Bay we have Them Eastport Oyster Boys- previously known as Crab Alley. The sing about things nautical. "Back Creek Crabin' ", "Good Boat, Good Shoes, Good Dog" (what else do you need?).

In addition to so many of the 'standards' I've seen listed, one addition to the Infinite Ipod last year for us was a Dennis Kamakahi Hawaiian CD. It's very relaxing and fits in nicely on the endless shuffle.
Most of the time it seems like we just listen to Radio Margaritaville on satellite though.

LUZ.... hate to keep harping on Brubeck... but it's so neat to hear someone discover something I've loved for so long.... This is MY favorite Brubeck album.. It is BRILLIANT!

In 1958, the Dave Brubeck Quartet, one of the most popular jazz groups in the world, played 80 concerts in 14 countries during a three-month period. To salute the marathon road trip, the pianist/leader composed six songs for a new recording (which is now out on this CD). "Nomad" and "Brandenburg Gate" are the best-known originals but all of the other selections are equally enjoyable, featuring fine solos from Brubeck and altoist Paul Desmond. ~ Scott Yanow

PAN AM?!? Wow. I remember those guys. Flight 1, the "plane that never sleeps" is how some Iranian and Indian friends referred to it.

Nice music, too. :)
