Where does your boat name come from?

Catalina Capri 22 Cincinnati
Boat name

We have had our Capri 22 for 4 four months now and are still contemplating its new name. However, "Spellbound," is on the short list. We wanted a name that conveyed the feeling of sailing! Also, of equal importance is the way the name looks! The style of the letters, can compliment the impact of the name, and further add to its meaning. Additionally, we have found that name, in combination with the boat's other graphics/decals can really improve the boats appearance and individuality! This may seem overkill, but we even use the same Font in the boat's registration numbers to help coordinate the style of color scheme.

We bought our boat three yrs ago and it's name was "whistler" which actually meant absolutely nothing to us. I can play tunes on a clarinet but cannot whistle a note. After several months we were contemplating "Finale" which is a musical term and also meaning the last boat. Then we came up with "Finisterre". Fini=end and terre=land. Thus meaning lands end. Finisterre is also the name of the town in Spain and was the end of land back when the world used to be flat. Also, it is the end of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage hike (in Spain) that starts in France which my wife walked. About 500 mi. Hence the decision "Finisterre"..

My boat had no name when I bought her and after chewing it over for a couple of months, I decided to name her in honor and remembrance of a friend of mine who grew up on the shore of my favorite sailing/camping/fishing lake. Her life was tragically cut short in an automobile accident as she was returning home and when I saw the highway memorial cross had fallen down or been removed, it spurred me to name my C22 "Kellie Marie."

Our previous boats were Southern Cross after the Crosby Stills and Nash song and the constellation. The latest boat was originally from Long Island Sound and called Mystic (PO's favorite place to visit?). We liked the name too so we kept it.

Chrysalis was so named when I bought her. Once I removed the painted name and saw the raised, original gel under it; I decided to keep the name. Fortunatelty, the lettering guy lives at the foot of my dock ;) We matched. the font/size and went right over the high spots.
The name grew on me. A shift in fortunes and lifestyle meant a "coming out" into new environs. Sorta fits. :)
Named the dink "B..O.B" forthe double entendre;; Bug-Out-Boat" ;)
Another factor was that Chrys was at one point USCG registered. As I understand (stood?) it, it's easier. to re-register without a namechange :D

Oday 272 Kentucky Dam Marina
My first boat was Tin Cup Chalice, named after the Jimmy Buffett song. She was an old Chrysler 22 that had been neglected, but to me she was the most beautiful boat at the marina (still is).

My new boat, an Oday 272, doesn't have a name, so she will be named Irie - Irie (I-rie \I ' -ree) is the word in Jamaican Patois that means, "alright". The term can be used to mean 1: powerful and pleasing; 2: excellent, highest; n 3: the state of feeling great.

when we purchased our Oday 28', I was desperate to call her --
PRIAPISM -- this is the condition referred to in ALL Viagra and Cialis commercials, IF you have an erection that lasts longer than four hours, call your doctor (RIGHT!) - this condition is Priapism --
that was a NO GO with the Admiral - and the explanation and definition would be of an issue with every query--

so we decided, since the Captain can at times, when things aren't going 100% perfect - uses "colorful language", in England & Canada, that is referred to as the "Air is Blue" ---

hence the name - Indigo Breeze

I'd also like to suggest, that when a name is a bit long, such as ours, and you have a swim ladder down the CENTER of your transom, as we do, perhaps split the name as we did, rather than covering up a third of it with the ladder, and the name becomes unreadable!

It took me about a year to name my boat. One awesome day I was out sailing, the sails filled out, the boat settled into a nice little heel, the gps was reading 6 knots, almost sailing itself, life was good. I thought you sassy little girl. I looked up the definition of sassy. 1: having or showing a rude lack of respect 2: very stylish 3: confident and energetic. Confident and energetic was just what I was looking for, hence the name Sassy Girl.

Bakaluka got its name from a word used in a central Illinois tribe of Indians located near the now town of Hoopeston called the Notsepooh. ( Not see poo) they were not well known for hunting but were rather a lazy tribe that did not like to hunt for food so they planted crops, like sweet corn and bartered with other local tribes for meat and other essentials needed for life on the prairie. When a good deal, was struck the indians would strike their chests and proclaim Bakaluka. Meaning they felt a good deal was struck.
So we named our boat Bakaluka.

that you were heading down the road with some kind of variation of the "We're the Fugawi tribe". But it sounds like you're serious! (or not -- is there a punchline I'm missing?)

Our boat is Canadian documented. That can make naming her much harder as each vessel must have a unique name, no two can be the same.

Fortunately our previous boat was named Windsong (it was not documented as it was under 30 ft) and we discovered that the name Windsong II in the Canadian registry was available so we took it. We really liked the name and already owned a few items with Windsong on them so in the end are quite happy with the solution.

We found her in a barn in southern Illinois. Threw tires and lights on the trailer, dragged her home, cleaned the years of dust and dirt off her and she looks like new. Well, almost... hence the name Suspended Animation.

Two boats - two names...

Our Mac classic is named "Teliki" - first two characters of my children's names - TEgan, LIndsey, KIra.

An artist friend thought it sounded tropical, hence the "T" being a palm tree. He freehand painted it on the boat too - looks pretty good in the attached pic.

Our Aloha 32 came with the name "Kota Bharu" which is the name of the city in Malaysia where his wife was born.

In 2010 we bought our first sailboat, a 1989 Hunter 30. After buying it, I totally had buyer's remorse and couldn't sleep for weeks so, we named it "Insomnia". A year & a half later we lost the boat in fire while in winter storage. Instead of getting out of sailing, we basically bought the same boat in 2012, a 1991 Hunter 30. We named this one "First Mistake II". We are still enjoying our boat!

My naming of Mitym

I was traveling about once a month from Santa Cruz Calif to Clearwater Beach Fl for business. I had bought a 79' Hunter 37c and needed to rename it. It came to me in the middle of the night ,2:00 am (good thinking time) . Mitym (my Time) is what hit me and so it is today, 20 years later.

Rosa Nautica is the Previous Owners wife's favorite restaurant in Peru. My wife loved the name when we saw the boat so we kept it. The name is also a spanish version of compass rose, which has a nice nautical connotation. The graphic on the boat is of a red rose centered on a grey compass.

Rosa Nautica was on my dock for a few years. I wondered where she ended up. I know the previous owners. Glad she has found a good home. Enjoy sailing her.
