Where does your boat name come from?

Karma - the name came with her. Never changed the name of a boat, but this one fits her well. I've strived to practice good karma, particularly whilst on board.

My current boat "Impetuous" was named by the PO and we decided to keep it. Especially because the T in the middle was the Tartan T. We even made the new mainsail cover look the same way. Yes, we painted the name on two years ago and it still looks great.

The two previous boats were named "Unole!" and "Mni Ole". Both come from Native America. "Unole!" means wind and we had the name put on in italics like it was getting blown over.

"Mni Ole" translates as Seeker of Water and was appropriate for a daysailer that draft 6" with the centerboard and rudder kicked up.

In nerd-speak, the symbol "G" is used to refer to a Thermodynamic term called "Gibb's Free Energy" and delta means "a change in" so

The Delta Gee means "A change in free energy".

As a USNA graduate and retired pilot, my boat with its flag blue hull and gold accent stripe is appropriately named, "Wings of Gold".

My wife and I had arrived at the boat, in the slip. On the car ride to the boat, I had been telling her about how calming it was...even in the marina. Once in the boat, our things stowed, that feeling came over both of us...calm. Up until that point I'd always said I'd name the boat "Therapy", but, at that moment the word becalmed popped into my head. I was not even thinking of boat names at the time. I know that becalmed means stuck, no wind etc. so I spelled it this way "BeCalmed". Now, it is a reminder or instruction rather than something negative. I've always liked dual meanings and nautical themes on a boat, and this name covers those two and let's me know why I'm there.

We bought our '91 Cat 30 from a wonderful couple in Savannah about 6 years ago and her name was "Gone Again". When we first saw her, my wife and I both fell in love with her beautiful lines and impeccable appearance. She was a real eye catcher. Being from Georgia, she could not be anything else but our "Southern Belle".
There was a huge response to the question of your SBO name, and the question was posed; where does your boat name come from?
Ok, I'll start.

We acquired "Nothing Like This" 4 years ago from the second owner in Colorado, a 1996 Catalina 270le. We kicked around a few names, had come close but not quite on a couple, and then there was a line in a song that the Admiral liked, and she suggested it. The name really does mean what it says, there are a lot of boats on the lake up here in sunny Alberta for the 26-1/4 days we get of summer, but there really is "Nothing Like This" in these parts.

Cheers
Gary

From Jimmy Buffet's "Cowboy in the Jungle" was playing on the radio on the way to take delivery.
"Forget your blind ambition and learn to trust your intuition, plowing straight ahead come what may."

In the middle of a renaming. The boat came to us named Linda Loca

We did our de-naming ceremony back in October.

Since my name is Chip, my wife and kids wanted to name her Chip's Ahoy.

After a lot of family discussion, and even the attempt of an online naming contest https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1050550249/the-stargazer-adventure] Our failed Kickstarter project[/url] we have Chosen the name Stargazer.

We are having our naming ceremony this weekend.

Dalliance was named by the previous owner. He was a distant relative who sailed until he was 83 and I sailed with him for seven years before buying the boat. It seemed like it could be bad luck to change the name and I liked it anyway, so it stayed. Had I been naming it, I probably would have referenced my profession as an architect and come up with something like "sketchbook", "perspective", "site visit" or the like. Dalliance has proven to be a more entertaining name to explain.

It's more directly fitting to this thread, so pardon the repetition, here is the explanation of the name that was included in my response yesterday to CloudDiver's post on Snarky Boat Names…….

…...People, especially those under 40, sometimes don't know what it means and even mistake it for a woman's name or a flower. When I explain the word is often used as a euphemism for an affair and has two dictionary definitions; 1. Amorous flirtation, and 2. Dawdling or a frivolous spending of time ....and money (my addition), their eyes get big and they say "Oh yeh, that's a sailboat name!"

I bought the 27' boat, she paid the difference to buy the 32 with ultra leather upholstery so it seemed prudent. She does let me drive it.

Our O'day 272 is named Harmony. She came to us named November Gail, but the admiral refused to sail on a boat named after a storm! I figured I better name it something peaceful sounding. My second choice was Zombie Plan. My kids love that idea.

I'm always reminded of a kid sitting in his red wagon saying C'mon S'Go! while trying to get more speed up. So, H23 is named "S'Go, S'Go"

Tgardner: How appropriate for your post. We bought our 2 yr old grandson a new, red, Radio Flyer wagon for Christmas. His Mother cried with joy and he was delighted! Chief
