What's your favorite boat name?

My admiral and I met on Match dot com...the new boat is named "Perfect Match" The old boat was named "Sea of Gold". The story of that name is too long and too complicated to explain in full but suffice to say...a gentleman who passed away and loved the ocean...his last name was Gold and in his honor that became part of the name. He was big in the local "heal the bay" organization and a very accomplished scuba diver and underwater photographer and it just seemed right.

That's killer. I was liking "Trailer Tramp". Now I'm liking that too. But in the end I think she will be "Betty Nuggs". It will sound great over the radio, "Coast Guard - Coast Guard, this is sailing vessel Betty Nuggs" ... "That's right - mighty cones."

We wanted to name our boat "Con Sordino". Both of us are string players and the term means to put the mute on your instrument. You get a wonderfully rich but quiet sound. (just like we love it when you raise the sails and shut down the engine)...

However, as we thought about it, thinking how much trouble we'd have on radio calls...we decided not to. By the way, we would have named the dinghy (with an engine) for the term to remove the mutes: "Senza!".

My name is Dave Jones...ya, Davy Jones, so I wanted to call my first boat 'The Locker'. When we looked into it, we could not find anything positive about Davy Jones' Locker, so my wife would not accept the name. We went with her choice, Vesper, for a couple of reasons. The Vesper hymns are the calming, evening hymns that were sung years ago, but also Vesper was the martini in James Bond's Casino Royale...we drank a lot of them on that boat. My current boat came with the name Landaleigh, Celtic for 'Land and Sea', we like it. I think my next boat (if there is one) may be 'Mrs. Jones'.

I dunno, Dave.... D.J. Locker can be relevant if you think of Big Nate's school locker. It holds everything you might ever need- kind of like a boat. Well, mine at least. It works as a storage locker over the winter months.

As to naming dinghies -- my catboat is named "Whisker," so I decided to name the dinghy "Litter Box."
