I still want to know what the deal is with that line that appears to be wrapped around the genoa sheet and hanging in the water(straight down, no less)!

It's not wrapped around the sheet, it's hanging from the lifeline. I assume it is a reaching sheet or a spin sheet... the block on the toerail gives a better sheeting angle. That's how we store our spin sheets while racing.

The wind is coming from the left from about the direction of the low hill in the background.

Helmsman is using a tiller extender, hard to see in the photo. Go to the GOB website and look a larger image.

At the back. Never mind this crowd, you'll never get a straight answer once the topic is this far off the rails. The outside rail. The one that should have a guy tied to it.

This thread has been driving me nuts. I do need to get a life. However, Jackdaw asks the question: "What's wrong with this caption?" It's not anything wrong with the picture, I believe, but with the caption itself. I might be going out on a limb here but after some research found that the Panasonic DHC-GH2 does not have an image stabilization feature.

Interesting. My Nikon D40x does not have image stabilization, but the long lenses I use with it do. Could it be that the photographer was referring to the lens and not the camera?

And I'm pretty sure that the photo was taken between races. The crew, except for the Bowman seems to be looking intently in the direction of where the start line would be, and not where they are going.

Bwhahahaha! Best answer yet--and one of the few that actually answers the question as posed. Well done!

Whaaaaaaat? and costs $1000.00. I don't understand. Nice follow up, so sad you're going nuts, perhaps this IS your life now. You need to find more issues with your boat!

Get a Fuji X100. Looks and feels like a Leica but does not cost as much as a Leica. And best of all, it is small but carries an APS-C sensor so you get a true 1.5:1 aspect ratio. Whoot

Oh... and I am sure the image on the Mag cover was a crop to enlarge the boat. I doubt the other boat was that close to get the entire boat and mast unless they were using a wide angle lens in portrait format. Still, nice image.

EXACTLY. I was thinking the description of the point of sail, but your find works too!

Sorry @Brian D , threw it all in the lake and got a Sony AX100. 4k in a handycam format with full controls and 3 levels on ND filter built in, with USB so it can be charged at the binnacle. We saw a cutaway the other night on CNN where this camera was being used for the interview. It's small, light and packs a punch. Here's some video from literally day two, full auto everything and no tripod. The SteadyShot is very good. (and there are boats in the video too!) Night time shots turned out way better than ever expected. Can't wait for the lake to thaw.

Hi again all, the caption writer here with some more info. This isn't definitive by any means, but the photographer reported: "The photo was taken with a Panasonic GH2 equipped with a 14-140mm zoom lens. The GH2 is micro four thirds camera with 16 mega pixels. Its small size, light weight and good optical image stabilization make it well suited for use aboard a moving boat."
All the best,

@Jackdaw After careful examination, it appears we have a mutiny in progress. The guy on the bow appears to be absconding with the sail.

I think we need to get out boats in the water and eyes off the computer screen. Time for spring sailing, soon, maybe?
